The UN rights envoy has said he is 'satisfied' with the situation in Uzbekistan with regard to human rights protection, the Uzbek newspaper Huquq reported on 19 March.

UN Deputy High Commissioner for Human Rights Bertrand Ramcharan said during a meeting with a top legal official that "he was satisfied with the performance of the law-enforcement bodies in the field of human rights protection and ensuring the supremacy of law", the paper said.

During the talks with Deputy Prosecutor-General Hamidjon Nematov, on 12 March, the sides also discussed future cooperation in human rights between the Uzbek law-enforcement bodies and the United Nations, the report added.

In a separate public release, Envoy also noted: "Taking advantage of its resources and capabilities, the state will continue its resolute uncompromising fight against any violations of human rights, let alone the torture of people." source (http://www.uzreport.com/eng/dispnews.cfm?ch=301&dep=34&vrec=9434)
