I believe, if you are smart enough...you can learn anything by yourself in a short amount of time...you don't really need to take exams or pop quizes to do so!
School system may help only when employers recruiting you, since you have the paper that says ..you took certain classes and passed them.
Soon or later school system will turn into different education system or face a failier.

Extreme comes only if you turn it up high enough.

You know, Delta, people are lazy & I think school is the best system to teach to be organized. When a person is organized, he/she can learn more. So, people instead of learning at home, prefer go somewhere & learn in the classroom. But, not all the teachers are effective. After taking classes of such teachers, I really begin to think that I waste my time.

We can see many examples from history who havent study in school or university but they were very smart and they become best scientists .
for example Einstein,Freud,Gauss ...
Also in the past there were no any schools like now
