US-led forces in Iraq will find Saddam Husayn's weapons of mass destruction for sure, US Ambassador to Uzbekistan John Herbst has said, according to the Uzbek translation of an interview he gave to Uzbek TV on 12 April.
"Leading experts in the world as well as US experts believe that Iraq does possess such weapons," Herbst said. "It is not surprising that the weapons have not been found so far; as only few weeks have passed since the war started in Iraq. I am convinced that the weapons will be found for sure. As you know, the coalition forces have found special uniforms for using chemical weapons in some areas in Iraq. The number of uniforms was about 3,000 in some places. The uniforms were made to be used. We should not forget either that UN inspectors found a huge amount of weapons of mass destruction in Iraq in 1995. The information about the weapons was provided by Saddam Husayn's son-in-law, who had been sheltered by Algeria. I am convinced that after completing the successful military operations in Iraq, those who took part in the creation of chemical and bacteriological weapons will themselves show the place where the weapons have been hidden."
In reply to a question about the divergence between world media agencies in covering the Iraqi events, John Herbst said: "Certain media agencies reported that the coalition forces had failed in Iraq, but the facts have proved the opposite. The coalition forces have entered Baghdad. To do this they have covered 2,000 km from the Kuwait border over the past two and a half weeks. This is a great success from the military point of view. Some agencies have reported that the Iraqi people are receiving us as their enemies, but, as we can see, the Iraqi people, who have been liberated from dictatorship, are greeting us as their friends."
Answering a question about the future fate of other foreign countries' investment in Iraq, John Herbst said that the post-war Iraqi government would tackle this issue. "As for the fate of various countries' economic interests in Iraq, then the new Iraqi government will decide this. That issue is not within the remit of the United States. Our task is to destroy the weapons of mass destruction and help the Iraqi people to build a democratic and open society," Herbst said.
Herbst also said that it was unlikely that the war in Iraq would bring about a wave of terrorism in the countries that are members of the anti-Saddam coalition.
"Terrorists are currently seeking to hide. That is why they have not been able to carry out their terrorist attacks. The current main task of terrorists is not killing the Americans, the British, the Israelis or other people, but to save their own lives. This is because all countries are conducting a serious fight against them. Joint efforts to cut off the channels for financing terrorists are an important part of this struggle.
"Before the start of war in Iraq, many people assumed that the war would create many new terrorists. My opinion is that their assumption is a great exaggeration. If terrorists wanted to carry out their attacks, they would have done this before the war, during the military operations and after the war. It is a serious crime to be a terrorist. I can tell you for sure that every terrorist will lose."
