Uzbek Nationals in USA Accused of Trafficking in Women

LONDON. The authorities in the United States say a research assistant at the University of Texas and his wife have been arrested on charges of trafficking in women from Uzbekistan.
American officials said the couple, Sardar and Nadira Gasanov, had held at least three women in what amounted to slavery by forcing them to work as exotic nude dancers seven days a week.
The officials say the number of victims could be much higher.
The couple is said to have lured the women to the US with promises of extravagant lifestyles as professional models.
But once they arrived, the couple took their passports and threatened to send them back if they refused to hand over all their earnings.

EL PASO, Texas (AP) — A University of Texas at El Paso research assistant and his wife were arrested Friday morning and accused of smuggling women from Russia into the United States and forcing them to work as nude dancers, federal officials said.
A federal indictment made public Friday accuses Sardar Gasanov, 40, and his wife Nadira, 37, of recruiting women from their hometown, Tashkent, Uzbekistan.
“They sought out vulnerable victims and held them in virtual slavery,” said Assistant U.S. Attorney Margaret Leachman, El Paso division chief of the Western District of Texas.
Authorities said the Gasanovs forced three women ranging in age from 20 to 23 to turn over all the money they earned dancing, more than $700,000. The first woman came to the United States in 1998.
“The investigation is continuing. We have reason to believe there were more than just the three,” said Hardrick Crawford Jr., special agent in charge of the El Paso FBI office.
Leachman said two El Paso strip clubs have been searched.
“We don't know whether any of the clubs will be facing charges later,” she said.
Officials said the couple posted flyers in Tashkent recruiting women to work as professional models and promising extravagant lifestyles and the opportunity to bring their families to the United States at a later date.
The Gasanovs are accused of using illegally obtained visas that indicated the women were scientists traveling to the United States to do research at the university.
After the women arrived, the Gasanovs confiscated the documents and threatened to contact immigration officials if they didn't work seven days a week as exotic dancers, officials said. The couple also is accused of threatening to harm the women's families in Tashkent if they didn't comply.
When one of the woman's documents expired, officials said, Sardar Gasanov forced her to marry one of his students at Texas-El Paso to secure the needed documents.
The student, Ruben Dagda, is charged with marriage fraud, but officials said they haven't located him.
Under the Victims Trafficking and Violence Protection Act of 2000, authorities confiscated $500,000 in cash, a home, two vehicles and the contents of five local bank accounts, all of which belong to the couple. If convicted, they will forfeit those possessions, Leachman said.
It's the first time charges have been filed under that act, officials said. The act was passed to provide federal law enforcement a way to prosecute the sophisticated forms of coercion that smugglers are using to exploit their victims.
Each of the Gasanovs is charged with conspiracy, alien smuggling conspiracy, money laundering and three counts of alien smuggling for profit. Each faces up to 36 years in federal prison if convicted of the charges.
“Undoubtedly, other women are victims of such despicable crimes,” Crawford said. “We hope the publicity surrounding these arrests will encourage other victims to come forward.”
