Sharipov case worsens in Uzbekistan

Today’s news that Uzbek journalist Ruslan Sharipov has “pleaded guilty” to the charges of homosexual misconduct is worrying human rights activists, who claim that the case is not only an example of the country’s discrimination based on sexual orientation but also of the political pressures rippling throughout Uzbekistan.

They say that the arrest of Sharipov on charges of sodomy, corrupting and having sex with minors, and running a brothel is in fact politically motivated, and an attempt to suppress the openly gay writer’s anti-government writings.

Sharipov was arrested on May 26, but had already faced pressure from the government regarding articles he had written that criticised the lack of media freedom in the country.

According to Reporters Without Borders, he had previously been attacked in January of this year by representatives of the police for articles he had written for Prima, while in 2001, he was chased by the country’s Secret Service as he went to cover a trial in Tashkent.

Sharipov is one of the country’s leading civil rights activists, attacking the government for its repression of Muslims and for its oppression of gay people, and his lawyers have linked the court case with his journalistic past.

The move to both dismiss his lawyers from the case and forbid his mother from attending is the result of increased psychological pressure, according to an activist helping to defend him in court. Surat Ikramov adds that Sharipov dismissed them and professed his guilt for fear of his family and legal team's security.

He has been arrested under Uzbekistan’s Article 120, which punishes “besakalbazlyk” or the “consensual satisfaction of the sexual needs of one man with another man" with up to three years in prison and is a throw back to the Soviet’s rule – the law was introduced under Joseph Stalin.

However, the majority of successor states to the Soviet Union have repealed the ruling, with only Uzbekistan, Tajikistan and Turkmenistan formally choosing to retain it.
“We urge the government of Uzbekistan to stop the politically motivated trial of Ruslan Sharipov; drop the charges under Article 120; and release him pending an impartial, independent review of the remaining charges against him,” Human Rights Watch have said in an official letter to Uzbekistan’s President Islam Karimov.

“We condemn his arrest as an effort to suppress free speech in Uzbekistan and as flagrant discrimination and persecution based on sexual orientation.”

What is most worrying about the case is the international community’s reluctance to get involved, something the Uzbek authorities have foreseen by creating charges that are more controversial, activists are claiming.

“These additional charges appear to be an attempt to play on prejudices about gay men and to discourage the international community from speaking out in defence of Sharipov,” said Elizabeth Andersen, executive director of Human Rights Watch’s Europe and Central Asia division. “But this is not the time to be silent.”

Andersen goes on to say that the fact that Sharipov vehemently denied the accusations, but has now made such a large statement of guilt demonstrates that he is under immense pressure under custody.

“Rather than proving Sharipov’s guilt, this latest development suggests the authorities’ manipulation and coercion of a vulnerable detainee,” said Andersen.

She says the violence he is facing is likely to be tremendous. During the first few days of his arrest, Sharipov was told by police officers that they would rape him with a bottle unless he professed his guilt.

“Ruslan Sharipov has been a forthright critic of Uzbek government policies for years, and has faced steady threats and harassment as a result,” said Andersen.

To the person who bought this topic up - are u like arrrmmmm normal? This topic has been avoided by uzbeks - because its not a normal thing to do. Being gay is not normal. it was never in the nature of a human being. if humans did have it in their nature - god would have created adam and steve. but He didnt - He created Adam and Eve. Not even animals have this nature. humans, unlike animals - have akil and fikir....animals only have brain.

Which means we are pretty smart to figure out right from wrong - being gay is a jahil act. not knowing the difference betwenn .........

ahhh who caresssss stuff all of u you gays...as if what i say is gonna make a difference anyways .... doofuses - all of u
