Al Ain make most of home advantage
Al Ain 2 BEC Tero Sasana 0
AFC Champions League final, first leg
A goal in each half from Al Ain skipper Salem Jawhar and Mohamed Omar gave the United Arab Emirates outfit a 2-0 win over BEC Tero Sasana, of Thailand, in the first leg of the AFC Champions League final.
In a game of few clear-cut chances, BEC Tero could have taken the lead when Woorawat’s header crashed against the crossbar after 22 minutes.
But it was the home side, watched from the stand by coach Bruno Metsu, serving a one-match ban from the touchline for unruly behaviour in the second leg of the semi-final against Dalian Shide, who made the breakthrough when Jawhar latched onto Mohamed Omar’s lay-off to rifle home.
In the second half, Ain, the reigning UAE league champions, pushed forward and were denied a second when Rodrigo’s curling free-kick from the right on 57 minutes hit the bar with the BEC keeper beaten.
Ain’s cause was helped on 64 minutes when BEC Tero were reduced to 10 men, Witthaya’s foul on Rodrigo earning the BEC player his second booking of the night.
The home side made their numerical advantage count 15 minutes before time when Mohamed Omar, the UAE national team striker, latched onto substitute Faisal Ali’s cross from the right to tap home with a volley at the far post.
The second leg takes place next Saturday (October 11) in Bangkok.
