Turkmenistan put one over UAE
Turkmenistan - The United Arab Emirates, expected to be among the favourites to win Asian Cup qualifying Group B, got their campaign off to a bad start with a 1-0 loss to Turkmenistan last night (Sunday).
Roy Hodgson's side dominated but could not convert a hatful of chances and were left ruing their misses when Turkmenistan's Russian premier league club Rubin Kazan pro Vladimir Bayramov volleyed a left cross from skipper Didarklych Urazov for the only goal of the match to ensure the host nation make a winning start to their campaign.
The win puts Turkemenistan level on points with Syria, who beat Sri Lanka 8-0 on Saturday.
"If we can continue playing the same way we did tonight we can still qualify," said Hodgson after the game. "The goal we conceded came off an error and hit the right spot - the corner of the net. They played aggressively and some of the tackles were questionable. However, they got a goal and we didn't.
"That was about the only chance they got and they scored. We had four or five better chances but didn't take it."
The two teams clash in the return leg in Dubai on October 30.
