Uzbekistan starts Afro-Asian Games with victory over Iran

Uzbekistan opened its first match against Iran with the victory.

After a barren first half, Uzbekistan´s Marat Bikmoev came up with a stunning 4-yard left footer to put his side in the lead in the 48th minute, which eventually saw them notch up crucial three points in the four-team group.

Playing under floodlights and on a slippery field, both the teams appeared evenly poised but could not score. Uzbekistan forward Alexander Geynrikh was impressive with his raids down the right flank.

However, Iran, who were very accommodating in playing their match despite arriving only in the morning, turned the tables soon after Uzbekistan shot into the lead and kept the rival defence on tenterhooks, resulting in several rough tacklings.

Uzbekistan´s Shavkat Raimkulov was sent off in the 70th minute, having received his second yellow for rough tackling.

In the second match of the day Zimbabwe outplayed Burkina Faso 4-1. The goals were scored by Matora Asani (3), Albert Mbano (25) Vusumuzi Nyoni Prince (72). The author of fourth goal is unknown now. Barro Smamba Seydou scored the only goal of Burkina Faso in 16th minute.

Uzbekistan will meet Burkina Faso on 25 October, while Iran will take up Zimbabwe.

Uzbekistan beats Rwanda to meet India in football final

True to the expectation, Uzbekistan moved into the final of the Afro-Asian Games to set up a title clash with India, but only through a golden goal against a fighting Rwanda 2-1 at Gosha Mahal stadium on 29 October.

Both the teams started on an even note and made alternate raids on the rival fort.

After a barren first-half, it was Uzbekistan which shot into the lead through Mansur Saidov in the 63rd minute, while Jimmy Malisa drew level for Rwanada ten minutes later.

Both the goals were the result of defence lapses.

Following a through by Uzbek medio Jasur Hasanov, Rwandan keeper Osy Mahmud failed to grip the ball which defeated towards Mansur Saidov who shot home easily (1-0).

The Rwandan equaliser came after Jimmy Gatete sent a cross from left while Olivia Kerkezie headed the ball towards the Uzbek goal.

Jimmy Mulisa who was lurking near the rival box took a shot which got deflected into the Uzbek goal, hitting a defender (1-1) ten minutes later.

The Uzbeks scored the golden goal as Rwandan keeper failed again.

Following a centre from the right, the Rwandan custodian failed to punch it out proprerly and Uzbek forward Solomov headed it towards the goal.

As Rwandan keeper Mehmud Mossi failed again to punch it out, the ball went to Uzbek forward Konstantine Boyev, who simply pushed it into to make his team´s way into the final in the 12th minute of the first half of the extra-time (2-1).

Rwanda and Zimabwe would now play each other to decide the bronze medal winners.

India and Uzbekistan dominate Afro-Asian Games
Hyderabad - VETERAN striking duo IM Vijayan and Baichung Bhutia both notched a brace each against Zimbabwe to help steer India to the Final of the inaugural Afro-Asian Games.

India will now face fellow Asians Uzbekistan in the Final after the latter had beaten Rwanda with a late goal in the other semi-final.

India’s 5-3 result will surely please the fervent football fans in the country, a win that most certainly sent India national coach Stephen Constantine into a state of sheer delight.

"A truly fantastic result… incredible. For once I'm lost for words!" said Constantine on Indian Football. "It was really a great result for India and as you can imagine I am absolutely delighted for the players, the FA and for everyone connected with India football."

In a match played at Hyderabad, Albert Mbano gave Zimbabwe a fourth minute lead but India were able to stamp their class on their opponents, Vijayan firing two goals while Bhutia added another one in the 40th minute to send India leading 3-1 at the break.

Zimbabwe attempted a stirring comeback but the contest was effectively killed when Renedy Singh scored in the 53rd minute to send the score to 4-1.

With just nine minutes remaining, Regis Marere then pulled a goal back for Zimbabwe and once again, the faintest suggestion of a salvation was shot down as Bhutia scored his second of the day in the 83rd minute to make it 5-2.

Simon Chipunza scored Zimbabwe's third and final goal in the 87th minute.

Innomov Islam scored with a long-range shot in injury time as Uzbekistan stunned India 1-0 in the football final at the Afro-Asian Games on Friday night.

In a keenly-fought final, Uzbekistan, who fielded their under-20 team for the tournament had agreater share of═ball possession and made several forays into the Indian goal area, but the defence and keeper Sangaram Mukherjee did well to keep their forwards at bay.

But with minutes ticking away for the final whistle, Islam surprised the Indian defence with the right-footer from way outside the box.

The result came as a bolt from the blue for the hosts, who put up an impressive performance right through the tournament. It also dashed veteran I M Vijayan's dream of ending his international career on a winning note.

However, Vijayan had the distinction of emerging the top scorer in the tournament with the four goals.

The match began on a dramatic note with India claiming a goal in the first minute itself after a throw in by Selwyn Fernandes. The ball appeared to have gone straight into the goal without touching Jo Paul Ancheri, who was inside the box.

In the sixth minute, Vijayan came up with a header, but Uzbekistan goalkeeper Nesterov Ignatiy just managed to tip it over the horizontal.

Ten minutes later, Uzbekistan forward Geynrikh Alexander, who starred in most of the attacks by his side, took a shot at the goal and Mukherjee had few problems in collecting the ball.

India had another good chance in the 25th minute when a diving Rennedy Singh shot out following pass from Jatin Singh Bisht. A few minutes later, Tomba Singh sent in a cracking right-footer but the Uzbek keeper collected it neatly.

In the second half, the Indians played better and created more openings and made quick substitutions. Vijayan had a couple of tries but could not find the target.

Uzbekistan also had a few chances. In the 78th minute Alexander came up with a good right-footer, but Mukherjee just managed to clear it.═

"We were in the final of an inter-continental meet for the first time in many years. But we did not put them under adequate pressure. Particularly in the first half, we allowed them to hold the edge. I am disappointed as also the boys about the result," Indian coach Stephen Constantine said.

On the performance of Uzbekistan, he described the team as a good side. "Any age group they may belong to, but they are good, solid side. They fought well and had a slice of luck also," he said, referring to the last minute goal.

He also said the Indians were unlucky to have been denied the opening minute goal as "some of the boys told me he ([ncheri] touched the ball. But from my position I can't make any comments about the referee," he added.

Bhutia also felt luck was on the side of Uzebkistan.

"From that range to get in a ball requires a bit of luck. We missed a couple of chances, but that is part of the game," a disappointed Bhutia said.

Uzbekistan coach Broisov Viktor said today was a big day for his team. "We surprised India. Everybody thought India will play better, but we came good. I am happy that this young team has taken the title. This will help us further in preparation for the Junior World Cup to be played in United Arab Emirates," he added.

Asked who in the Indian team impressed him, he named Vijayan, Bhutia and Shanmugham Venkatesh, who replaced Ancheri in the later part of the second half.

In the play off match between Zimbabwe and Rwanda, Zimbabwe won 7-5 via the tie-breaker after the scores were level 2-2 at full-time, to take the bronze.

Сорри, ошибся. Мухтархан Дильдабеков, которого побил Рустам Саидов, был серебрянным призером Олимпийских игр 2000.

Две золотые и две серебряные медали - так выступили казахские боксеры на Олимпиаде-2000! Олимпийскими чемпионами стали Бекзат Саттарханов и Ермахан Ибраимов (добавивший "золото" Сиднея к своей бронзовой медали, завоеванной четыре года назад в Атланте), Болат Жумадилов (как и в Атланте) и Мухтархан Дильдабеков поднялись на вторую ступень пьедестала почета.

Но Бекзат Саттарханов попал в автокатастрофу и умер. Жалко парня..

Одной из главных сенсаций олимпийского турнира боксеров стало выступление Бекзата Саттарханова (на верхнем снимке). Для 20-летнего атлета из Шымкента самым большим успехом до Олимпиады было "серебро" юниорского чемпионата мира 1998 года. Его же соперник по финалу американец Рикардо Хуарес, хотя и ровесник Бекзата, но является победителем "взрослого" чемпионата мира, проходившего год назад в его родном Хьюстоне.

No vyigrali po obshemu zachetu, tochno takje i Rossiyu vyigrali... v konce kubincam ustupili. V etom sorevnovanii mnogoe zavisilo ot Muhtarhana Dildabekova. Tot proigral, hotya vse zriteli svisteli, shumeli, kogda on na ring vyshel. Lyubimec kazakhstancev eshe ne zanimal pervoe mesto. Vsegda v finale ustupal =)
