Hello everybody!

I have a question. I bought Siemens S40 GSM cell phone from ebay to use it in UZ. There is a problem it is locked with cingular wirelles. It can be used only with cingular SIM card. it means I can't use it in US with other providers on GSM 1900 network. Eventhough it is locked can I use it with our local GSM provider (Like Uzdonrobita, Daewoounitel) in Tashkent. Do I have to unlock it first. If yes, how can I unlock it? Please help me!

Thanks in advance

IrrigatoR,
I faced the same question but with a different phone.

there are three ways:

1) once in Uzbekistan, you can give it to cell-phone shops to reload the software. it will cost between 15-20 UZS. However, sometimes there is a problem with that service and phones stop working. My advice: if it is a fairly common model in Uzbekistan, you can "unlock it" there. If it is a rare model, don't risk it.

2) Search for ads in ebay or craiglist to find the unlocking service. They would be more experienced with phones sold in the US.

3) Take it to the store of your provider and ask them if they have a service or a partner in Uzbekistan. They will say "no". Tell them that you're going there and need your phone unlocked and mention that you thought you could use it anywhere in the world. Show that you would love to use their service there but since they can't offer you one, they could accomodate you by unlocking your telephone.

wish you well.

PS if money is not a problem, buy a used GSM ($20-50 on ebay or craigslist) in the US and experiment with unlocking it. Once you are finished using it in Uzbekistan, give it to your younger sister or a brother - they would be happy. In the absence of those, give it as a gift to a person close to you. You will conserve your own "better" phone and will seem very generous and thoughtful.
