What to consider when choosing a spouse

Question:
At the moment I am having very difficult time in trying to make my parents understand my Islamic needs including marrying a practicing Muslim. My mum wishes me to marry her nephew in Pakistan who would not be able to help me become a better Muslim as he is not practising and would not be able to support me. my mum claims that it is not essential that my husband prayers 5 times a day which is contrary to what Islam says. I have written a letter to them expressing how I feel but I'm not sure whether it would make a difference as my family is very cultural and there is a lot of family politics involved. If the letter doesn't work what can I do make them understand I need a practising Muslim as a husband. At present there hasn't been a suitable proposal and I cannot think of any likely suitors either. My family finds it degrading to search for a rishta for their daughter saying that people will think I am desperate. Please help me try to explain to my family that deen is the first quality they should search for in a husband or wife for their children.

Can they marry me off against my will? Refusing unsuitable suitors, being good to parents, and the art of marital trench warfare with love and good character...
