Is using alcohol in any form haram?

Question:
When you have time please give me your view on the use of alcohol by Muslims.
Of course without a doubt drinking alcohol is very much harram, but I have a disagreement with my sister who believes alcohol in any form (khamer or non-khamer) is haram whereas I think when used in e.g. cough medicine/perfumes/creams is allowed with the reason that in these uses, alcohol is not used to give "nasha" but it has other properties. I've read a few weak hadith (reference to Reliance of the Traveller) which state when alcohol is consumed whereby it cannot be seen, smelt or tasted it is allowed. Please give me your opinion and refer to strong hadith if any.
