Cause of death of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him)

Question:

In a recent discussion with a friend, my friend suggested that the cause of the Prophet's death (SAW) was as a result of the poison he consumed at the hands of the Jewish woman, an incident that is related in hadith. However my view was that Allah would not cause the death of the Prophet (SAW) at the hands of a non Muslim and anyway this incident occurred some time before the Messenger’s eventual demise (SAW). Can you clarify what the sunni view is about the cause of death of the Prophet (SAW).

Wa `alaykum as-Salam:

`A'isha, may Allah be well-pleased with her, disclosed that the Prophet, upon him blessings and peace, said the pain of that poison remained with him through the rest of his earthly life and she adds that it was one of the reasons for his last and fatal illness. This is so that Allah Most High would give His Prophet the rank of Shahada as well as all his other ranks, may Allah bless him and grant him peace and may He grant us that rank so as to be near him.
