DOHA - Qatar received a major boost in their preparations for the Asian Cup 2004 finals and their crucial World Cup qualifying clash again Laos on June 9 as they crushed fellow Asian Cup finalists Turkmenistan 5-0.
Philippe Troussier's side have started badly in World Cup qualifying with consecutive losses against Iran and Jordan but they turned on the style against the Turkmen with striker Sayed Bashir leading the way with a hat-trick for the Gulf side.
The home side got off to the ideal start as Ali Mijbel edged past his marker before scoring the first goal of the night with only two minutes on the clock.
Bashir then doubled the Qatar lead in the 15th minute when he stole the ball off the Turkmenistan defence before beating the opposing goalkeeper.
Things went from bad to worse for the visitors as they were reduced to 10 men in the 39th minute when Turkmenistan striker Vladimir Bairamov was sent off for his second bookable offence.
Qatar capitalised in the final minute of the first half to make it 3-0 as Ahmed Moussa headed home a cross from Nayef Al Khater.
On the hour mark, Bashir scored his second of the game when he turned home a corner kick to make it 4-0 on the hour mark.
With only two minutes left on the clock, Bashir completed his hat-trick when he headed home a cross from the right by Walid Hamza to round out the goal extravaganza that brought some relief to French boss Troussier.
Qatar are in Group A at the Asian Cup and will open their campaign against Indonesia in Beijing on July 18 while Turkmenistan face Saudi Arabia in Chengdu in their Group C opener on the same day.

Even though I am very sceptical about the result, I think turkmens did the right decision be playing against an Arab team. (We played with Azerbaijan).
I think Turkmens are having better preparations for the WC qualifiers and AC.
I wonder if Gochkuliev was in this match or not.
PS. I did not like the style and wording of the article. It is showing how much AFC is biased towards the Arab teams.
