We dear bothers and sister share everyting here in this forum, except as I have noticed books we have read and reading right now. With all the propaganda war happening around us it is extremely difficult to find to some extend objective author. So I suggest we exchange opinions about the authors and recommend books we read here in this thread.
I guess as an initiator it would be wise if I start it myself.
Although I am couple of chapters away from finishing it, I can more or less conclude my opinion about the book I am reading now. Jason Burke's "Al-Qaeda:Casting a shadow of terror" is more reveling then any other source on the topic. First of all on the author himself, he is special reporter of The Observer and it is his first book.
If you want an information from somebody who has actually seen the source of it and lived it himself you will have to chose this book. Assuming that you are interested in the subject matter beyond the news coverage, I am pleased to tell you that book uses fairly simple language. When you finish reading it I am pretty much certain you will have a basic idea what does media mean when they say "Al-Qaeda". Besides book gives comprehensive coverage about the Taliban, their origin and why do they do things they do. Not to mention the relation between the two: Taliban movement and Al-Qaeda. I can honestly tell you in my experience the argumentation of the book is as objective as it can get in western comprehention of the world.
I do not think one can face any problems with obtaining the book as it is fairly new (paperback version has just been released), though for those who live in Uzb it could be somewhat tricky business.
With all the respect to all of you...
