IRAN produced a tremendous display to defeat United Arab Emirates 3-0 and book their World Cup play-off berth, where they will face the Republic of Ireland over two legs for a place at the finals in Japan & Korea.
Iran went into the game with a 1-0 advantage from the first leg in Tehran and expected a tough encounter in Abu Dhabi, but Miroslav Blazevic's men came through with flying colours as they registered a 4-0 aggregate win.

Iranian legend Ali Daei (pictured) opened the scoring after just 8 minutes when he curled home a wonderful strike to give his side the lead, but just moments later the away side were reduced to ten men when Pejman Jamshidi received his second yellow card.

U.A.E saw this as the perfect opportunity and went on to dominate the rest of the half with wave after wave of attacks, but Iran held firm and were happy just to counter-attack against the home side.

Iran's goalkeeper Ibrahim Mirzapour pulled of a string of great saves to keep the home side at bay until half time.

The second period saw a change of approach from Iran, with Karim Bagheri and Ali Karimi pulling the strings in midfield as they went looking for a second

Just minutes into the period, U.A.E were reduced to ten men when Mohamed Ahmed saw red - levelling up the sides, and effectively spelling the end of their World Cup campaign.

Iran then took control of the tie and with less than 20 minutes left they put the game beyond U.A.E with a second. Mehrdad Minavand swung in a dangerous corner and Bagheri was the only player to react as he blasted home to give Iran a priceless second goal.

U.A.E then gave up hope and it was no surprise when Iran made it three just 10 minutes from time when Minavand got on the end of Mojahed Khaziravi's corner to make it 3-0.

The Iranian's could have gone on to make it 4-0, or even 5-0, but three was good enough and now they turn their attentions to Dublin were they will travel to take on Eire in the first leg of their play-off on November 10

FOOTBALL Association of Ireland spokesman Brendan McKenna has stated that Mick McCarthy and his squad are fully prepared to travel to Tehran next month.
Question marks have already being raised regarding Eire's second leg, scheduled for November 15, but McKenna has said that unless told otherwise they would be travelling to Iran.

"We are prepared to go and will go," said McKenna.

"Mick McCarthy has already been there and the feeling amongst the players is that they will follow Mick.

"We cannot force any of the squad to travel and would not do so, but we may not have a choice about travelling their and will play.

"If any of the squad do not want to go then we will not force them, we won't and we can't."

Recent games in the Middle-East, that have included Western sides, have been hit by player withdrawal, with Israel's World Cup qualifier against Austria and Hapoel Tel Aviv's Uefa Cup encounter with Chelsea both disrupted by the amount of players that refused to travel to the area.

It remains to be seen whether any Irish players will refuse to travel, but suggestions are that the all the squad are prepared to follow McCarthy.

Fifa are yet confirm whether the second leg will be played in Tehran, but Ireland have already stated their reluctance for a one-legged affair which means the format is likely to remain as it is.

REPUBLIC OF IRELAND boss Mick McCartyh has named his squad for their World Cup qualifying play-off after Iran booked their place in the two-legged tie with a 4-0 aggregate win over UAE on Wednesday.
McCarthy has recalled Leeds United defender Gary Kelly to the squad after he missed the final qualifier against Cyprus earlier this month because of suspension.

Captain Roy Keane is included in the squad despite missing Manchester United's last few games with a knee injury, but Blackburn Rovers winger Damien Duff is out with a hamstring problem.

The matches will be in Dublin on November 10 and Tehran five days later.

The Irish boss was an interested onlooker in Abu Dhabi to watch Iran beat the United Arab Emirates 3-0 in the second leg of their Asian zone World Cup qualifying play-off and he admitted it was a worthwhile process to get a look at his opponents.

"After watching the first leg in Tehran last Thursday, I was not surprised by the result," said McCarthy. "But travelling to the Middle East for these two games was invaluable homework," said McCarthy.

Full squad:

Given (Newcastle), Kiely (Charlton), A Kelly (Blackburn), G Kelly (Leeds), Staunton (Aston Vila), Harte (Leeds), Dunne (Man City), Breen (Coventry), O'Brien (Newcastle), Cunningham (Wimbledon), Kinsella (Charlton), Roy Keane (Man Utd), Carsley (Coventry), McAteer (Sunderland), Holland (Ipswich), Kilbane (Sunderland), Finnan (Fulham), Kennedy (Wolves), Reid (Millwall), Delap (Southampton), Quinn (Sunderland), Robbie Keane (Leeds), Connolly (Wimbledon), Morrison (Crystal Palace).

The squad is very very balanced. In four games against Holland and Portugal, Irish didn't lose a single game.
Two draws with Portugal both 1-1, and draw in Holland 2-2, and win in Ireland 1-0 against Holland. It will be really entertaining , but it will also be difficult for Iran to beat Irish. Let's hope for better, let's hope that Iran will beat Europe representative.
