I believe a lot of you took TOEFL/IELTS, and i want to know your scores and opinions about them. Which one is better? Strategies/techniques of getting prepared to take them and everything connected with this issue.
All concerning replies are appreciated, I really need'em!

I took TOEFL, But honesely I sucked. There were 60 of us taking TOEFL last time, and my score was 35th in the list. The highest point, i've never met anybody who got so far since, was a guy from Samarkand. He got 635.
I sucked.:)
Listenning part has always been easiest part for me, and whenever I took TOEFL, I knew that listenning part can pull my score up. Grammar was always perfect. The hardest part, and I never did good at it :( was READING.
I tried to ge focused on reading, did a lot reading suff, but it never worked out. I ALWAYS SUCKED AT READING :(
The reason is, I don't get the meaning of that smart texts, unill i read it two or three times. And he time they give(probbably I am not ok) is never enouh for me:(
All the time, after the est when we sat with our friends sharing our impression on test, they astonish me with their opinion on reading! And I feel really supid, And when they ask me what was the hardest text for me, I am confused. All of them seem to be soooo hard for me. And very ofen I just put a dot anywhere possible-Just don't want to leave the space unmarked. So, this is my weakness. Anywas, I am glad I don't need to take it anymore. I hate it.
PS. I took TOEFL after my first year in the US, and the score shocked me-I GOT MUCH LESS, THAN I USED TO GET BEFORE COMMING TO THE STATES!!

I never did take the real exam. But I did go to a tutor because I thought I'd be taking it but it turned out to be that because I went to an International School from the second grade it was not necessary to do the TOEFL because basically it was counted as my first language.
Anyway, I never really had problems doing the assignments. I always had a pretty good score, but the most hardest thing for me was--the essay. It was torture for me because I was not a big writing fan.But thank God I am getting better at doing my papers,of course I asked for help sometimes, especially in the beginning of my studies I had some difficulties but now I have been doing them myself and they are good. But I always ask someone to read it.
Reading part is tricky, but I never really had problems with it.
IMHO, IELTS is harder than TOEFL.
Ciao.

For listening comprehension, download Eminem's songs. Listen them, and try to write the words. Then, print the lirycs and compare to yours. And then just read the lyrics and listen to the songs. Eminem should be enough to improve you listening comprehension  . For other parts what you need is to read a lot of books in English. Baron's and other TOEFL books are just instructions, they don't enrich your vocabulary.
I did my test four years ago and I got 575, and for my university I needed 550 ;)

I was close to taking IELTS test but didn't get a chance. My university accepted me without IELTS test requirement.
So I can't say much about it.

I recently took IELTS. Well, to me it seemed a bit harder than
TOEFL (took 3 years ago).
The total time given for IELTS was much shorter then you would get in TOEFL exam + in listening part there're no repeats, which means you'll hear stuff only once. Also, I didn't like listening cause everything was pronounces in Ozzie dialect, and I got most of the stuff misheard.
The second part of the writing section includes an essay. Basically, you gotta write 400 words on a given topic. (Compared to 300-350 words in toefl)..
To sum it up, I would say go for TOEFL if you want to study in USA, or IELTS if you plan to go anywhere in Europe or Australia.

IELTS goes for UK mostly, in other parts of Europe both TOEFL and IELTS are excepted.

My score was 237(575) two years ago. But it was enough to be admitted to my university. There is a user lucky14 whose score was 297 out of 300 in computer based exam.
Good luck.
I also have a GRE for which I prepared only two weeks and got fairly good result. 1100 out of 1600

Genius: US colleges and Universities have a wealth of English as Second Languages tools & services that meet the needs of international students. Therea are some programs and resources available at US institutionsand advice on sharping your English- speaking skills. Preparing ahead of time will help tremendously, but uhh once u arrive at your College or whatever u should spend as muchtime as possible in the company of native speakers to feel increasingly confortable about using and encountering English. U should also read to broaden their vacabulary. Also if u surround yourself with English as much as possible. Its certanly understandable that we all want to find people from our countries, but those people won't develop the languages skills necessary for success at the university, like :"New Yorkers" :) ( ushatdagi uzbeklar);)
I took my TOEFL test a lengtly occasion when I just wanted to score my skill... but I got anticipated score. But uhh after that i did every one above. In point of fact I didn't have to take neither one of them (tests), reason I went to College not as an international student but uhh as a permanent resident.
PS::PPrograms available around the world.
