I was speaking to a friend of mine from turkmenistan, he says this can be ANOTHER BS of western media.
He says he has heard a lot of things like this, but every time he calls home he finds out that the media is lying.
So please don't always believe media, ask for yourleves if you have any other information source.
P.S. He is going to find out if this is true or not next time he calls home, and I will post the outcomes here.

В этом контексте Генсек ООН рассчитывает на поддержку туркменского лидера.

Напомним, что президент Туркменистана выступил с инициативой создания в Ашхабаде Регионального центра ООН по предотвращению конфликтов и превентивной дипломатии в Центральной Азии. Это предложение было поддержано главами Узбекистана и Казахстана Исламом Каримовым и Нурсултаном Назарбаевым.

It really sounds like a media crap. Let's assume Niyazov has logic according to a logic of his own. Though we disapprove of it the logic is still present - he wants to retain his power. Well, I can't see any motivation to act as he is now reported to do.

He is against everything. from education to foreign investment. He wants to keep the turkmens in dark so that he could continue to rule without any opposition.

Turkmanistan has the world's 4th biggest natural gas reserve. If the income is used to improve the infrastructure, education and living standard, today Turkmanistan could be seen as a model country for central asian countries, but unfortuantely thats not the case.

Президент Туркмении Сапармурат Ниязов в очередной раз подтвердил "законность" своего пребывание в десятке худших диктаторов мира (http://www.ura-inform.com/archive/?/2006/01/28/~/58069).
На днях стало известно, что в Туркменистане прекратили выплаты пенсий инвалидам, бывшим колхозникам и другим нетрудоспособным категориям. Службы социального обеспечения вначале объяснили задержку выплат необходимостью пересчета тарифов, но позднее стало известно, что Президент страны Сапармурат Ниязов подписал новый закон о пенсиях, в соответствии с которым полностью прекращена выплата пенсий вышеуказанным категориям.
По сообщению Министерства социального обеспечения, в результате реформы, более 100 тысяч пенсионеров не будут получать от государства ни копейки. Прекратятся выплаты пособий для инвалидов. Более 200 тысяч пенсионеров не досчитаются львиной доли своих пенсий. И это при том, что пенсия в стране выплачивалась в размере от 10 до 90 долларов в месяц.
Кроме того, пенсионеры должны вернуть деньги, полученные за последние два года, это называется "удержать излишне выплаченные суммы". К тому же закон будет сурово карать чиновников "за предоставление недостоверных сведений за назначение и выплату пенсий".
Согласно новому закону, получать государственную пенсию будут только женщины, имеющие трудовой стаж в республике не менее 20 лет, и мужчины, проработавшие не менее 25 лет. Эксперты отмечают, что больнее всего реформа ударит по людям, прибывшим в Туркмению в последнее десятилетие советского периода.
В результате нововведений Туркменбаши, подавляющая часть пожилых людей, живших от пенсии до пенсии, осталась без средств к существованию. В стране царит настоящая паника, происходят невиданные доселе протесты, организованные обескураженными пенсионерами.
По сообщению "Дойче велле", местные морги переполнены пожилыми людьми, скончавшимися от инфарктов. Многие пенсионеры умирают или теряют сознание прямо в почтовых отделениях и банках, когда узнают, что у них полностью или частично отобрали пенсию.
Службы "скорой помощи" дежурят у помещений отделов социального обеспечения, потому что часты случаи инфарктов у пожилых людей и инвалидов, которые пытаются протестовать и добиться выплаты денег от чиновников.
В ответ на обоснованные протесты обделенных пенсионеров Президент Сапармурат Ниязов заявляет, что пенсионерам, якобы, переплачивают с советских времен, но теперь будет наведен порядок. В свое оправдание Ниязов приводит несуразное объяснение, что таким образом пытается сократить расходы государства.
По неподтвержденным данным, в Туркмении может быть принят закон, согласно которому пожилых людей будут содержать их взрослые дети. Или же пенсионерам предложат сдать свою жилплощадь и переселиться в дома престарелых.
В то же время европейские эксперты называют подобную "социальную политику" геноцидом и говорят, что Туркменбаши сознательно уничтожает людей преклонного возраста, которые еще помнят "дониязовские" времена, и поэтому представляют для него опасность.
Много ли сэкономит Туркменбаши в результате пенсионной реформы, не известно. Однако на его совести смерти сотен людей, которых раньше времени свела в могилу его "социальная политика". Com'n Hamid, do you think your friends parents will tell him smth bad about Turkmenbashi and politics over the phone? Secondly, most of the turkman kids who study in the US are elite of Turkmenistan. I mean his/her parents are in the government, so none of them say anything against that regime. Also, Turkmen people who pass Uzbek border for different reasons describe the situation as they appear in mass media (I cant exactly remember where it appear recently, may be in the ferghana.ru or somewhere else, but it was about Turkmen people coming to Uzb to cure).

I mean -- have you heard a joke: when the teacher said to kids in Tashkent, "tomorrow is a little holiday, so everybody should come in a national dress" --- one kid came in militia's uniform? It means that we have so many militia people, that their dress is becoming a national dress of a country :) I mean :?

I mean -- have you heard a joke: when the teacher said to kids in Tashkent, "tomorrow is a little holiday, so everybody should come in a national dress" --- one kid came in militia's uniform? It doesn't matter whether it's 4 mln or 25 or more. The quality matters, not the number! of course, you might argue with me bringing up facts and recent issues in andijan as much as you can. But remember, nothing can't stand people's will and action. The people have the will, but unfortunately, they are slacking off when it comes to action. :)
