LA and NYC..both areas are very famous and very progressive comparing to any other cities in the USA.Both are rich and have done more to the country.
I had been in both cities, and obviously the coasts have a lot in common, now,
lets share your thoughts and opinions to the following question :
Which contributes more culturally and financially,New York or Los Angeles?
or tell us your travel-stories (whatever you know) about these two big cities.
If you look at it from the capitalist view New york definately means more, due to being the financial centre. But I would venture to say LA has more millionaires and Hollywood, which is an American dream.
P.O. I like the seasons here in California,so nice and so beautiful,I prefer CA to NY,Beverly Hills to the Hamptons.;)

All of these problems are worse in JYC than in L.A. + people are rude, weather sux etc

As for joja thanks. ;) But I was really pissed, when Falcons lost superbowl to Eagles this year.:( But there is a small possibility that Eagles can become my team:P
back to the topic, I have been to NYC during the break and liked it. But I haven't been to West coast yet. However, the life in NYC seemed to be exhaustive and boring, it's good for once in a while visit though. I would prefer smaller town to live where you can enjoy your life slowly and relaxing:lol:

Generally speaking East Coast versus West Coast! Every city has its particular sites and problems.
Yeah, that is very true about NYC. So far I've been there only twice. All I can say that the city is filled with the people who has no time for a single thing, that the money is their blood. It's beeing really far from basic life ethics: like politness and stuff. People are so rude there.
Moreover, I've seen the Macy's parade. Oh man, that was the best thing I ever seen. Those floating balloons were cool. Have you guys ever seen the night beauty of NYC from the top of the Empire State Building?
I recomend you guys visit the Boston. That's really coo city, not very big, but very beautiful. Morever, Red SOX rules, (ooops they lost the opening season game to the Yankees, yesterday, gosh they were kicked really bad 9:2), however they won the world series games for the first time since the 1918.
Huh, what about Patriosts? Who is your daddy right now? Well, the quasterback is from Cali :).
I can't really say anything about the LA. What I know and what I heard is very warm thougths about this city. Who knows? LA streets pretty much look like Orlando streets. Isn't it?
Well, that's what i know felllas.

Phrased differently :)
I'd prefer to live in a city:
as intelligent as Boston
as entertaining as Los Angeles
with nice weather of Atlanta
with salaries of Palo Alto
with cost of living of Birmigham, Alabama
with lively music of Chicago, Memphis, Nashville, New Orleans mixed up together
with lovely beaches of Miami
with a great College Football team of USC :)
with a great NFL team like Pats :)
etc etc etc :)

Well the city of L.A. is boring, but when we think of L.A. we usually refer to greater L.A. area including Orange County (where Disneyland is), LA county which and Ventura county...
By the way, in the city of L.A. there isn't much to do except for Hollywood and Beverly Hills area. Anything that has a postal code:
Los Angeles, CA is not a great place :) but Greater L.A. area kix ass of JYC

I hated rude people of NYC.. NYC is filled with rude people.. - they are not rude, they are New Yorkers :). they become rude only after you stare at their eyes, especially in NY subway. rule number # 1 of NY, never stare at people's eyes, again - especially in the subway
I hateв attitude, everyone is rushing somewhere even if they have no where to be. - everyone is rushing somewhere cause they have something to do.New York is all about time and money, city operates 24/7, so if you don't rush you are late and loose your money
I hated concrete filled streets of Manhattan.. no green whatsoever - have been to Central Park? it is very nice, very very green in spring and summer. btw, it's also in upper manhattan, which u hate
I hated filthy and dirty streets of it, especially upper Manhattan and Bronx.. - well, those neighbourhoods are not for visitors and tourists, those places belong to other minorities(who become majorities day by day). you better stay away from Harlem and Bronx when you visit NY next time, maximum where you can go is Central Park
I hated the pathetic weather of NYC seems like you have been in the city in winter or in late fall. New York's wheather is wonderful in spring and beautiful in summer.
I hated toll bridges - well, somebody has to pay tolls. i would suggest that the NY's visitors pay double toll, cause when they will have such an opportunity again :)
you lucky that you have a car in LA, what about those who don't? public transportation is a problem in LA, it is not convinient. if one does not have car in LA, he is stuck, especially when he or she lives in one part of the city and works in another.
NY has the best public transport in nation, if not in the world, i would say. the subway works 24/7, one can get to any location of the metropolitan. it is safe, with lots of undercover police officers and MTA employees
why is the UN headquarters in NY, not in LA?
why does almost every president whenever come to US with official visit, gives speech at Colombia, not at UCLA or USC? :)
what makes New York the New York, i.e. better than LA :)
Statue of Liberty
Empire State Building
Madison Square Garden
Wall street, world's financial and business center

Brighton Beach, nation's biggest Russian speaking community
Rego Park, nation's biggest Bukharian Jews community:)

NYC is the financial center not only in US, but also in the world.
If some financial institutions do not have headquarters in NY, it does not mean that NY is not financial center. It's the place where all these companies come to make money after all:lol:
After the New York there comes Chicago and Philadelphia, IMHO, as financial centers.

Was in NY several times. Good place. However good for those who like to be in a crowd rather than outside of it. Lots of famous places to see, easy to find and get to the needed place (subway helps alot). Lots of Bukharians...feel yourself in Queens as in Bukhara. Don't even think that nobody will understand your nasty words in Tajik,Russian...or even in Uzbek. LoL
Was in LA this spring break.Great place. However good for those who like to watch awesome ocean...palm trees...sunset(especially in Newport). Beautiful houses(especially in Balboa Island), expensive cars(everywhere)...etc. Also lots of famous stuff to see, but I prefered just to walk in the streets of Pasadena or Santa Monica and also, the Getty Center was great. Hollywood was OK, but a bit dirty and "crowdy". The downtown had lots of bums in it...surprising ha?

Get off your high horse there pal.
My statement is neither right nor wrong, it's simply my opinion, along with LOTS of others'. My post is not even directed at the poster himself, but towards New Yorkers, generally, being the "we're #1" crowd.
I try not to generalize people, but in this case the vast majority of New Yorkers that I've come in contact with at work, and other places were exactly just like I described - your-city-sucks-big-time-and-New-York-is-center-of-universe pricks.
BTW, nothing is wrong with clarifying someone. When you replied to me, your tone was confrontational rather than informative. That's when it became a problem. I'm not your chew toy. ;)
The post wasn't directed at you; and in no way was it derogatory towards anyone here.
If you have a differing opinion I more than welcome it, because I try to be open-minded, and appreciate opposite views.
No offence taken.
It doesn't matter where the headquarters are located, otherwise Bentonville Arkansas would become the financial capital city of the world. New York indeed is the finacial center of the world and by most people viewed as a capital of the world.
Personally never been in LA, but visited Chicago, New York, New Orleans and Kansas City. So far Chicago is my choice number one.
I love NYC for the money and drive. I am one of those impersonal kids, who don't give a big damn for what life has to offer outside business... all I care about is success. Personally, I have never been to the West, 'cause I don't feel like going there. Perhaps, I am wrong.. perhaps not; nonetheless, I have no feelings for the West. I just love NYC and the East period!
Just a minor correction, the headquarters of all the major investment banks are located in NYC: Goldman Sachs, ML, Morgan Stanley, Lazard, Deutsche Bank (US), JPMorgan Chase, Citigroup....
Spoken like a typical New Yorker.

I liked both NY and Chicago equally, visiting as a tourist: NY is cool by its energy and drive and positive aggressiveness ... Chicago struck me by more elegant architecture, and being a little bit brighter, greener, more bikes, students on rollerblades along lake michigan; more lively. NYorkers say Chicago is a great place to live... i would toss a coin if i had to choose.

People who don't like New York are the ones who were simply not accepted by the city and wouldn't be able to live here. You either love the city from the first day or you hate it.
I have been living here for almost 5 years now. I visited LA a couple of times, San-Francisco, Boston and few other big cities in the U.S. There is no other place like New York. One cannot even compare LA to New York.
From the moment I get up, rush to work through the busy streets of Manhattan, stop to get my coffee by the Egyptian guy, look at Manhattan skyline I enjoy another day spent here.
All those comments about a lot of jews, rude people and street garbage mean very little. NYC is very diverse and has all kinds of communities and street noise is part of every big city. Please note that Brighton Beach, Rego Park...Queens, Bronx, Brooklyn are not part of New York City.
All the best,

There are rude people, who hate the city and take it out on stupid tourists who can't understand the difference between "avenue" and "street". Please note that Brighton Beach, Rego Park...Queens, Bronx, Brooklyn are not part of New York City.
All the best,
Taleen
expression is not accurate. New York City consits of 5 boroughs.
Manhattan, Bronx, Brooklyn, Queens, Staten Island.
All the Best.

What has gotten into you people ? I think stereotyping everyone as 'rude' in NYC is simply not correct. Yes, people do rush here because they have their business to take care of, you just simply can't assume that they rush just because they want to rush. I've been living in New York for 14 years now, I've been to LA, Chicago, Boston and Atlanta and I think they all have their definite pluses and minuses, as well as New York city. People tend to stick with what they like and prefer based on their level of comfort, so I say if people like LA, good for them, I hope they're happy. There is no point of comparing cities because I think each city has its own level of uniqueness and offers things that cannot be found anywhere else. For the people who didn't like New York, well too bad, hope you have a better experience on your next visit.
Best of luck...
P.S. I think you guys should drop that JYC thing. Honestly it makes you look so immature.

I visited NYC on holiday in mid '03 - loved walking walking through Manhattan and riding the trains as needed, but didn't like sorta gettin mugged in the subway and the foul odours from the subway, I guess? Very rude people in some food outlets - bank staff chewing gum while they served you - yuck!!!! Wooo!! Horrible seeing the homeless everywhere, and being scammed and not knowing, really, when stuff was a bit dangerous or not - like the fellas hanging around the ATMs! One thing I noticed in NYC that I never encountered in other places. Men peeing on the street. It was so wierd. And also you will find it utterly hilarious to see blacks walking awkwardly down the street in their baggy jeans, wearing about three t-shirts, each one strategically longer than the other, . . i'm sure they mimic hip-hop styles .
Regarding walking in NYC:
You can be standing in the middle of the Great Lawn of Central Park and someone will bump you, just a little, as they pass by. Stopping on a sidewalk can engender comments of a variety of heat levels. Walk with a sense of purpose even if you haven't a clue of your direction.
New York City Rule No. 1 :
Anyone standing still's in somebody else's way.
Interesting... have you forgotten where you come from? Remember those dirty bazars and mahallahas where kids not only pee, but take shit and sleep and shit, etc. Have you forgotten where you from? A country where people don't take showevrs monthly... now, who do you think you are to be speaking in such tone about New Yorkers? Prince Charles? Or perhaps, Bush's son-in-law? Who? Yuck!!! Wooo!!! mush.. chuvak mlya. Keep your emotions to yourself, and never say "i never encountered in other places," 'cause coming out of Uzbekistan I am sure you have seen much more degraded places.

Woow, fellas come on...we just discussing cities, let's not get emotional here. Honestly I think dirt, rudeness, discomfort can be encountered in any city but by different shape and form. Sure New York has negative sides, but so do any other cities around the world including Tashkent. As I was saying above, let's focus on good sides of the cities we visit, get something we cannot get in any other place. Have you guys been to Met ? I highly recommend it.

- Whole world do not wake up in the middle of the night for sake of Hollywood and millionnaires in LA, but they do wake up for the NYSE market trade opening.
- People don't much care about what Hollywood starts say but they do listen to analysts and take account of Wall Street reaction.

That's the problem nobody knows NYSE cos it's under shadow of Brad Pitt, George Clooney and Angelina Jolie. (see I even know them with thier surnames :D)
My post was written with sarcasm, don't take it seriously!

NYC is a BEST.
LA public transport problem
NYC everywhere available.
LA all over smog
NYC air not that polluted like a LA.
in LA You have to have a car or You have to call a taxi to go somewhere, in NYC public transport available everwhere.
in LA if someone works must travel long time to go to somewhere or in own car otherwise in taxi (expensive) and in NYC You can go in public transport.

Anyone that has at least piece of a brain can afford a car in L.A., public transportation is not so aweful by the way. Most of the buses run every 5-20 mins. Most of the people that use public transportation are illegal immigrants who can't have drivers license or insurance (even though you still may be able to get them somehow)
The big thing about L.A. - it is spread out, so you can't do much if you don't have a car. NYC is compact - but "too packed city" is not for me for example.
Smog is bad in downtown L.A. - but does not have as much impact as in NYC - the city is clogged, and the smog in the city will all the skyskapers is bad, smog osedaet v NYC + add to that humidity. Whereas, in L.A. the city is pretty much opened up. there aren't many tall buildings so a fresh breeze from Pacific clears up life a bit. Though, I must admit that L.A. county is the smoggiest in the US. Yet, I doubt that none of the areas has a high concentration of smog as NYC Manhattan area (I can't prove that, it's just a hypothesis - I will admit my wrong if you have some facts).
In general, L.A. is better suited for more relaxed and enjoyable living, whereas I see JYC as city of stress.

According to the "Sperling Stress Index" which is comprised of nine different factors associated with stress: unemployment rate, divorce rate, commute time, violent and property crime rates, suicide rate, alcohol consumption, self-reported "poor mental health", and number of cloudy days, the following are the most stressful cities:
Tacoma, WA - Highest divorce rates in the country and one of the highest unemployment rates. It's cloudy much of the time, and the suicide and property crime rates are high.
Miami, FL - Highest violent crime rate in the study and one of the highest property crime rates. Long commute time, a high unemployment rate, and a high rate of divorce.
New Orleans - A high violent crime rate and a high unemployment rate. There's also a significant number of suicides and divorces.
Las Vegas, NV - Highest suicide and divorce rates in the study, and a great deal of alcohol use. Residents of Las Vegas have a great number of days experiencing poor mental health.
And finally
New York, NY - Longest commute in the country, the hustle and bustle can really stress people out. Unemployment is high and so is violent crime.

Hell yeah! Tacoma sucks big time!
Not to mention the nightmarish traffic when hitting the I-5 down there.
I wouldn't move to Tacoma for love or money.
I once was offered a job there to manage the largest store plus the warehouse for Verizon Wireless. Money and benefits were very good, but the location just didn't fit with me.

I haven't been to LA to compare it with NYC, but have been in TN. I can say that NYC awoke me. Each time I go to Manhattan and go around there, look at people, I have a big wish and hope to work here in on of these tallllllllllll buildings. Once u begin living in NYC, u don't really notice the dirty streets, personally I don't, u get used to these "rude" people. But, I began seeing ppl here, whom I admire and try more. I don know, NYC makes me more energetic, alive life, I like it.
