View Full Version : The importance of GPA???

I think this thread could be a good place for us to share some opinions and a source for those who are applying for Master's degree or Undergraduate? what do you think how important is GPA to get into a good business school? should you also be concerned with what kind of classes you are taking? Or maybe other stats like TOEFL, SAT and others? and also which degree is worth more: a Master's from uzb or Bachelor's from a decent Uni in US?
Europeans and others not studying in US feel free to discuss the importance of GPA in getting into Master's programs, finding job etc.

Thanks all;)

GPA is important, but not THAT important. I know of several cases where people didn't get accepted, even though they had a better GPA than the next guy.
If it's not below 3.5, I'd say you have decent chances.

Apart from the GPA, they look into a variety of factors: your record; social activities; other achievements (PTK; Dean's List, etc.); references; paperwork, etc.

TOEFL score is also important. I received 650 points when taking TOEFL, and this score did help me a lot. I was told that as long as your score is above 600 (on the paper-based TOEFL), you're good to go.

and also which degree is worth more: a Bachelor's from uzb or a Master's from a decent Uni in US?

What?? I think the answer is pretty obvious!

Which Business school do you want to get into?
I think GPA is pretty important, of course, they also consider social activities or community service . And it also depends from what school you are coming.

Wow,according to the statement above, i'm soooo suitable for the graduate school...:D:D:D:D

But, TR, why would they need your TOEFL score, if you got your BA in the States with a pretty high G.P.A...It doesn't make sense, coz having high G.P.A in english speaking college already tells about your English language proficiency.....

I,personally think all the things mentioned above should be perfect...U never know...A perfect example would be one of my friends: His SAT score is 1480 (out of 1500), and he is so eligible for the full ride in one of the best universities in the United States....BUT his high school GPA was low for those universities...(I was so mad at him,coz the guy is with the great potential and too smart for the average school)

Hmm...actually the score report was more imporatant than score itself, cuz I am already in college. I took it in January 5 days after I came from winter break. The high school, where I took it, was scary...lol...anyways, I guess it was 1250 (math=750, verbal=500) verbal section was damn hard.
Now I am worried about my GPA, which lately started degrading.

Well, let me ask you smth: Where did u take your SAT? Back in Tashkent or here in the USA? Because, SAT/CAT, TOEFL/GMAT/GRE are usually held in American Councils library in Tashkent and not in some school...

Moreover, i thought u were here on an UGRAD program and as far as i know you, guys, dont have to take SAT...

Yeah, i agree, verbal section is usually hard...Hehe my score is slightly higher...;)

Well , it depends...
Lets say: TOEFL requirement is 550 or 560: At least u must reach it.
the same with SAT/ACT - when u applying to Univer....
But Admission office usually decides weather to accept u or not depending on student's applications and scores.
Let's say u are applying to Uni , with good test scores: TOEFL: 650 , SAT: 1500 and blah blah blah + good recommendations + Good GPA.
"Shermat" is applying to the same Uni with higher scores: TOEFL: 655 , SAT: 1550 and good GPA + recommendations
“Toshmat” is applying too , and he has even better scores: as a result even if u have high scores u are 3rd on the list , aren’t u!? If Uni is able to accept only 2 students , u’ll not be accepted ….
So it depends: how many people applying + what is ur ranking among those who’s applying… that’s all…

You r exactly right, so far as u know, the universities in Germany r solving the problems in this way, i.e, if they r able to admit 10 students, they just take the first 10 best students and they do not admit the 11th student even if his or her grades reaches the requirements

There are two important thigs in life to get into a decent Business school:

1. High GPA
2. Work experience

That's it. Don't argue...'cause I am right! Well, also being a minority does not hurt. :)

I did not get the finaid I was supposed to receive from NYU (apparently available only for freshmen), so I had to turn down both, UT Austin, and NYU. UT Austin wasn't worth transferring.. so I decided to stay.

If you are a graduate from a University that is ranked:
Below Top-100, then 3.7 and above,
Below Top-50, then 3.6 and above
Top-50, then 3.4 and above can get you into any top-notch business school in the world.

That is not to say having this GPA will guarantee an admission; there are many other factors that play a key role, such as work experience, interviewing skills, persistence...

I guess, those numbers should come in reverse order, don't they?;)

p.s. sorry for NYU, I thought it does not offer Finaid for internationals(except for loan) at all. At least I was told so, when I called them. Bastards!

Well, it depends how you look at it. I structured it in reverse-chronological order when it comes to the ranking of Universties...;

P.S.They do offer some financial aid to incoming freshmen... and a loan max amount of 10g's.

Well, Austin was a good option, if I had nothing to lose in my present University. There's was just too much I had to give up, including friends and network in order to transfer. So, I decided not to become another small fish in a big pond in Austin. Besides, outside the US, anything outside NY and California is not as well recognized unless it's Harvard or Princeton. This name-recognition has more significance to it than many people imagine. So, to keep my options open I had to make an optimal decision. Anyhow, where did you dig up my hotmail account? Isn't it from the USNA thread?

Well, I agree with you, cuz one does not have to graduate from top school(though austin is not!) in order to live in mansions and have a Porshe:D as you posted in a different thread. If you think you can succeed at SUNY, then go for it. Nonetheless, one has to choose what he finds the most appropriate for himself.

hehe... I see now. I remember posting that website somewhere, I guess you followed up on it. I have to disagree with you on Austin. It's a top-notch school, and it is ranked top-50 nationwide. All the major US corporations recruit there, including: ML, GS, Citigroup etc. You are also underestimating SUNY, USNews alone ranks four to five of our campuses as a Top School, and my campus personally is ranked in Top-50 Business Schools on WSJ, Forbes, etc.

Have you guys heard about Baruch (CUNY) which is also in the list of nations top 50 business schools(undegrad.), and is ranked #3 in NYS after NYU and Columbia, but costs 6 times less expensive?
I think that in US NYU's business school(Stern) is the best choice you can make. It is located in the heart of American capital of business, the Wall street is few blocks away, you can get an internship easily, and guaranteed job after graduation. Remember, investment in education pays the highest interest.

The best thing to do is to get your undergrad. degree in Liberal arts and Sciences, and if you want to go for business, just get you Master's in Accounting, Finance, etc. Most of the CEOs have only master's in BBA. My accounting prof. has bacalaureate in Math, and master's in Accounting, and it did not stop her to work for those big accounting firms and become CPA.
Besides, BBA is the most popular major nowadays, especially accounting. After graduation you will face tough competition. And do you know how much accountants and finance people work? Almost 6 days a week, and have only 1 week vacation or so. Of course, they get paid a lot. So if you think money is the most important thing, go for business, if not, try something else. Like philosophy:))
