The purpose of this poll is to see how the business majors of the forum are diversified. If you have double major or a minor, list them. And if it's not included in the poll, post it here, interesting to know anyways. Good Luck!

Salam,
I am in Economics with the concentration on, shall we say, "Financial Economics" in general and on Islamic Finance and Economics in particular.
Thanks for interest,

What about Business Adminstration? Does it count? :)

Dear Arti,
Plz, re-read the thread's title where you may notice specificity of the question asking the "major or concenration of the respective field in particular"... Well, if you're studying BBA then what's your stream : Finance or Marketing or ...others just to count a few...

First of all BBA is not the only program that comes to the mind dealing with BA. Secondly, mine is BSc in BA (where BA is the major). And it as well counts as bussiness related study, no matter how a sound of "Bachelor of Science" may confuse you. Next time when asked a question, do not pretend to know it all.
Thanks,

Arti,
no need to become so aggressive. Reading your initial post I also thought like "What...?":D , you know, it's not really wide known major I guess, that's why Jonybur might have accepted it as a BBA at first sight.
BSc. in BA...hmm... sounds like educational business...or what? where is your uni?
p.s. So far we have only Econ, Finance and IB majors. What about Risk Management&Insrance or MIS? Anybody out there with those majors?

It is not educational one but neat business study. The uni is in Europe.
Concerning agressiveness it is difficult to say who is more agressive: me or the person who advises me to re-read the topic. I don't understand when people tend to think that those who surround them are stupid. No need to be rude, especially when one does not posess all the inforamation concerning the given subject.
Cheers,
Arti

Hi Arti,
I didn't intend to show my agressive side however I could've done it so nicely... but I rather apologize if I said smth. wrong towards you or your major (well, if you have it)... And besides, I never pretend that I know smth. more than a guy next to me does...so if you claim you're wiser then let it be...but don't figure my words out as they came to be with agressive feelings...Ok...
Now, concerning B.S.,B.A. and BBA - all of them have concentration or emphasis on some particular sphere of respective discipline, thus if you're studying Business Admin. then it should have some kind of flavour on which to base on, as you're wise enough it's more than redundant to remind you that your BS could be split to all those above-mentioned (by Laziz) concentrations ....
Peace....
You both are correct... so drop it. Peace.

Risk Management & Insurance (I already voted).
Usually (at least in my university) this major had never been attractive or most leading one in popularity. However, after going deeper I noticed that it deals with many essentials of Finance (Investment) and Public Policy.
The area of my (upcoming) thesis covers specifically Environmental Risk (including large scale catasthropes).

Tokugawa,
I think you will be able to implement your knowledge in the US.With current Katrina events:)
Overall,I think Risk Management and Insurance is a good concentration.Be it working for Insurance company, banking,or any other company.Any company has to deal with these aspects.

Silbermond, tell me what exactly you are looking for, cause derivatives is not a small issue. If you are interested in Options, visit CBOE(Chicago Board of Options Exchange)'s website: cboe.com, they have some online tutorials there. If you need information on futures and forward contracts go to Chicago Mercantile Exchnage's website: cme.com
Good luck!

frankly speaking have no idea about hedging and derivatives. It seems that there some types of derivatives. What i need is just basic knowledge about them and what purposes they are used for and differnces between future, forward and option

silbermond,
derivatives are used to hedge.:) And their price derives from the prices of the underlying asset, i.e. stock price etc. The difference between them are not that much, but you should check on the website to know more about them. But trust me you won't be discouraged, if you are considering of taking the class, just do it. However, it also depends on your major.
Good Luck!

To anyone who can answer with at least a little explanation (preferrably, experienced people) - I'm going for my Masters and haven't decided yet which of 2 following majors to choose: MS in Finance or MBA with emphasis (concetration) in Finance.......
Any thoughts? Especially taking into consideration that i don't have US-based education so far and a perspectives of getting a job in future.......

I would recommend to go for MBA. Because MS in Finance courses usually have very little difference compared to MBAs in terms what they teach. However, universities/Business Schools pay more attention to their MBA programmes, hence you may get better quality of education and more uptodate infromation on your choosen subject. Plus job prospects would be relatively good with the MBA degree. It is not really necessary to have US based education but it would be good if you have some working experience. Since projects you do sometimes depend on what you've done in practice.

Given that brief information, I would go for M.S. Finance. Before I go on answering why you should do so, let me ask you one thing that you perhaps should think of before choosing MBA over M.S in Finance. Why do you need an MBA at this point? I am assuming you have no experience within the US/EU Union, given that you just moved over form Uzbekistan. If that's the case, there is absolutely no reason why you should do MBA. Besides, getting an MBA from anything below Top-50 schools is worthless; those that are in Top-50 require extensive work experience and leadership positions. Long story short, MBA will not get you anywhere; it won't get you even a job unless you had prior work experience and had demonstrated yourself in the best way possible.
Suggestions: Get your M.S. in Finance. Get a Job. After about 3-4 years of work experience get that company finance your MBA studies and move on to be a Managing Director, associate, VP whatever.. that would bring 150K + 50-80% bonuses into your pocket. Buy a Porsche make some children and live a happily ever after life. Pure and simple.

I just want to ask the same question as Laziz - why d'u think it will get me a better (and even any) job with MS in F. over MBA?
As about myself - been here for almost 4 years, but don't have any experience in chosen field (got a huge sales experience, but even that - not on a desired level)... and another thing - i just got my work authorization recently, so even though i wanted - i couldn't have any experience in finance in US.

Thank you for you advice. Btw, i got another question, will be glad if you can share your thoughts (or anyone else).
If you have to choose between 2 schools - one is a state university, with pretty tough schedule, requires GMAT score at admission, degree requires more credit hours (i.e. more time and money) or a private university, that has approx. the same ranking, a flexible schedule (understanding, that students who go for their Master's don't just study - they have their full-time jobs), doesn't require GMAT, degree takes less credit hours......... what whould be your choice?

That was exactly my point. MBA won't get you a job. Besides, getting an MBA from a school that does not require GMAT score (as mentioned in above) is like getting an MBA from Africa. Both are useless.
