The following information might be a little dated, but it shows main ticket categories and prices (in case you buy it in Uzbekistan). Person who has reached 12th but not 29th birthday at time of commencement of travel is eligible for Youth Fare (not necessarily has to be a student).

As I pointed out above, if you (your friend) buy a ticket in Uzbekistan I recommend the bolded line (Fare base: QZZ). May be, if you (your friend) plan to stay (study) in Japan for long period of time (like more than 6 months) and considering working in Japan afterwards, then buying a "One-way $550" ticket would a wise decision.
You also can purchase ticket in Japan (if you have friends here). The prices range from season to season. In October - November and January - February there are good discounts, and probably you can save up to $200 if you buy it in Japan.
