I've just discovered this forum and i'm looking to travel to Tashkent in January 2006. I am from the UK and have just got my visa and booked my flight.

However, the Uzbekistan embassy in the UK told me that I must register with the Local Department of the Ministry of Internal Affairs within 3 working days after arrival. How do I do this if I plan on renting an apartment instead of staying in a hotel? I understand that if I was staying in a hotel they will do the registration for me.

Also, i've found what seems like a nice apartment in Darhan and the owner will charge $30 per day. Is this a reasonable rate? He has also offered to register me with the Local Department of the Ministry of Internal Affairs for $3 per day but this seems a strange way to pay for a registration. I was expecting a one-off cost.

I haven't been home for a long time now, so take my words with a grain of salt.
From what I remember, you have to go to the district police office (RUVD), namely local OVIR, and register there. Pigs over there will make everything possible to make a dollar or two off of a foreignor, so make sure you talk to people in the British Embassy beforehand. They might be able to give you a heads up.

My bullshit meter is pinging loud on this one.
You could rent a decent apartment for up to $400-500 per month (of course, that depends on how long you want to stay). As far as registration fee goes, from what I remember, you pay a certain fee for a certain period of time, which AFAIK wasn't $3 per day.

royal, where the hell did you learn english?
I would very much like to take those courses
Registration done who ever send You invitation with them You go to local OVIR office of that region/town and get registration for Your entire viza period, fee is not daily, but in local currency, very little, not that high like $3.00 per day.
$30 per day seems to me high, but when You go there You may find out much cheaper and much better places also.
Hotels from $50 i think including the all the services..

The thing is that I don't have an invitation from anyone in Uzbekistan as it's not required to get a visa for British passport holders. I got a tourist visa for two weeks.

So, I just need to go to the local police station to register?

30 $ per day is too much even for Darhan. may be you'd better try to find B&B private hotel (for example "Rovshan", near to Russian Embassy, try to search web, you may find a link), they wouldn't charge you much and would registrate you (as I know they charge 30 USD per day including a registration).I guess that the owner of the apartment is cheating you.

Regarding appartment payment.
$30 is reasonable in Uzbekistan now. Especially for Tashkent-Darhan. I think The Reaper and Uzbekhonum have not been in Tashkent for a longtime therefore they do not know about appartment payment getting higher in Tashkent city.

It's illegal! Plain and simple.

Because of mentality like yours, our country is in a shithole. Pigs (MVD, SNB, etc.) are the ones who are shoving it deeper.

That time just go to any Hotel which You may find through the NET or that Uzbekhonim mentioned ”Rovshan Hotel” , they will do it everything for You - with room , service , registry and other accommodations during Your travel in Tashkent/Uzbekistan. first of all You have an Tourist viza, not visitor viza, so authorities will ask where You was during this period of Your stay in Tashkent/Uzbekistan ? ? ?
.. Are you looking certain type of "wild" stories in these days? ? ? Go head, I think in this days is not that hard to arrange those type "wild' stories to reality

The guy is offering the 1 bedroom apartment for $450 per month or $30 per day. As I am only staying just under 2 weeks, he will charge $30 per day. I have made an enquiry to the British Embassy in Tashkent as to the correct registration process.

On a separate note, how cold will it be in Tashkent in January?

last winter it was verrryy cold - till -10 C.

I would reccomend you to stay 1 day in "Rovshan Hotel" just to get your registration made by Hotel, then you can move to the apartment, it will be much easier for you. Believe me, you'd better not try to deal yourself with our local police office - you'll be excausted by running there and here, standing in a line, etc. anyway, you better know.

Please stay in a hotel and get registered there rather than renting flats.
You wouldn't have any problem with registration and further unpleasent situations with the local police while your visit. They could also help you to organise trips around the country.

Here is a website one of the of resonable priced hotels:
