Я не знаю знакомы ли здесь люди с публикациямии Марты Бриль Олькотт, потому что если нет то думаю стоит познакомиться. В 2001 году она вошла в список 100 людей к советам которых был призван прислушаться Джордж Буш. Она является самым большим западным, независимым экспертом (в самом серьёзном смысле этого слова) по центральной азии.
Я лично её обожаю и читаю всё что могу найти из неё. Хотя должен сказать у неё критики Казахстана до фига и больше.
На этом сайте можно найти список всех её книг и самое главное все её статьи--стоит их почитать.
Предупреждаю сразу, там нет тупого восхваления, каких то интриг и так далее. Всё написано сухим языком независимого эксперта.

May be it sems like offtop, but, reading Edward Said's Orientalism will help to make a litte idea about the so called " specialists" on the area studies...

How about some sort of reference to that person's book. I've never heard of Edward Said, but will check it out. I will say however that I have read hundreds and hundreds of articles doinn researches at my university and have never heard of that name. Martha Brill Olcott is an old fashioned independet expert who knows what she is talking about. Unfortunately many people try to make money by playing on our emotional feelings, like those western "experts" don't understand the true orient. That is oftern nothing more than just yellow journalism. I will however check him out.

The best hope for long-term peace and prosperity in the region is for the international community to press the Karimov regime to change. An important first step would be for the Uzbek government to accept an international investigation into what happened in Andijan. Back-channel diplomacy to get Karimov's acquiescence to this should include promises of international assistance to help the country cover its budget deficits while shrinking the role of the state in the economy. In return, Uzbek authorities would have to permit registration of foreign nongovernmental organizations and promise to step up the pace of civic institution building.

How does that make her a proamerican scholar?

She has numerously in the past critisized the president Bush; does that make her an antiamerican scholar?

She has critisized Nazarbaev; does that make her an antikazakh scholar?

Of course, no, she is simply objective.

If any (I mean ANY) expert tells me that people like Nazarbaev, Niyazov, Karimov are indeed desired to be presidents, then these people automatically become non-experts in my eyes.

Я лично слушал ее некоторые выступления. Объективностью там не пахнет. В чем заключается смысл ее работы для нее самой? В том, чтобы написать книгу, прорекламировать и продать. Для того, чтобы написать книгу, надо часто ездить в регион, чтобы собирать материал из первых рук для книги, но если она действительно критиковала бы режимы там, то она не смогла бы туда ехать, а значить писать книги, а значить зарабатывать деньги. Не один из представителей think-tank организаций не является объективным, иначе им не пришлось бы работать там. Все они отражают интересы и цели своей организации, ну и естественно свои собственные экономические интересы.

Когда ей задают прямые вопросы, она всегда от них уходит дипломатично. Так было очень часто по Андижану. Она говорила типа, я там не была, я не знаю, что там было и отмазалась. Она не дура, понимает, что ее не пустят в страну если она будет до конца объективной.
