Hello everybody!
I've got question. What to do when you have a homesick? (Kogda tak domoy hochetsya?)
I have not any problems, but ... it is so hard sometimes, and you just hate AMERICA!!! Even their flags, hanging everywhere, their food, which makes us fat, the language, which makes us forget Uzbek...
Oh, my GOD, any ideas... Didn't know that education in other place could be so hard... when you miss your family!

hehe you read my mind. I just beat my roomate. I hope he doesn't document me. they are so cheap. Other than that, I don't think I've ever in my travels have been so homesick. The best thing to do is just make your atmosphere uzbek. For example, put a pic of uzbekistan on your desktop, hang some pictures on your wall, think in uzbek and not in english. And of course teach the american idiots some uzbek words, so that they'll keep saying it like parrots.

Being in school and everything, I don't think it's wise to go back. Your nick is nice, I'm doing a research on Machiavelli. Is it the same person makavelli?
Keeping busy is what kept me going. There is really nothing else to say. Cook uzbek food if you can, but then you might tear when eating it. I would advise getting involved in some sports.

Listen to uzbek music, watch uzbek movies.
Make more uzbek friends and speak more uzbek. Make your surroundings uzbekization (good word isn't it?)
Kitaro,
With all respect, from my experience immersing oneself in native culture only had the adverse affect. I would start almost crying when eating Kazakh food, speaking Kazakh with my brothers or listening to the Kazakh music. Finally I had to avoid everything Kazakh, started listening to the American Radio, doing sports and all that good stuff. Only then did the homesickness subside.

Hi everybody. Well, I have here the same problemand I agree with the statement. I was advised to integrate more rigorously to the local community and make fewer calls, although it is not a simple thing to do.

i often feel the same as you do. sometimes i hate everything related to this country and even the reason of my being here.
one day i discovered forum.uz and whenever i feel homesick i come here, here you can feel yourself as in Uzbekistan, even if some people speak english you can feel the uzbek enviroment/atmoshere here.
one more cure of homesick is chating with uzbeks in reality (if applicable for you).
one more thing - listen to Kor'an (if you're muslim), you can find it here:http://english.islamway.com/bindex.php?section=echapters&recitor_id=175, it will give you strenth and think that it's worth to be there where you're 'cos you'll have a brighter future thanks to your being there.
everything's gonna be fine!:)

Juda bo'may ketsa, baqiriiib oling hech kim yo'q joyda, lekin eng zo'r yoli maqsadizni eslab, o'zingizni ubu nars bilan mashg'ul qiling. Bo'sh qolmang.

Boshqa davlatga moslashishning eng yaxshi yo'li mahalliy xalq bilan muloqotda bulish. Radiosini, tV kurish. Kechqurunlari amerikaliklar billan biror joyga borish, suhbatlashib, kulishish, hazillarini tushunishga harakat qilish. Hobbylarga vaqt ajratish. Hozir Uzbekistonda bulsam nima qilayotgan bulardim deb tasavvur qilib kuring.

Besides, such sweetest things as celebration of Hayit with real qushtili and kelin salom by your friend who's been recently married - helps a lot. Nu i konechno, zvonki domoy vsyo uchashayushiyesya i uchashayushiyesya :)

It's easy for those who live in NYC area... but for those who are outside that area do not enjoy the luxury of having uzbeks around. Homesickness is often the result of boredom, and therefore, next semester (if you are a student) try to take as many credits as possible to get yourself a really busy schedule... that's how I cope with it. Also, going to gym, movies and bars/clubs is definitely a plus. If that doesn't help, think about joining a club a fraternity (if you think that would be something you would like)... besides, virtually all universities have a club for russian speakers.
The way I look at it, I have two options:
1. I depress myself with thoughts about how wonderful it was back home, family, friends... bla bla.. bla (negative attitude)
or
2. I enjoy every minute of my studies with a positive attitude.
Every morning, I choose to behave with the latter attitude. If you think about it, you can't do much but live with whatever you have. It's meaningless to choose to be depressed, because depression will do only worse. So, enjoy being a student.. enjoy being able to study abroad.. enjoy learning... enjoy thinking about how people back home look up to you... enjoy it, while you can. I choose to have a positive attitude, and I love it! :D
go out and have fun, brother. make new friends and get the best out of your stay abroad.

You must be kidding, right? I know at least 5 people only Ferghana who are now in Denver. Two of them alone from our mahallya and besides administrator of this forum is also now in Denver.

as for me, the best thing is NOT to listen uzbek music, NOT to watch uzbek movies and hide everything which may remind me uzbekistan. although I love my family and home city, keeping my mind busy with thoughts of home and family won’t help homesickness.
Try to be busy with something else ;)

Somebody said,- "Life happens when you make plans"
Live daily by planing long term. Therefore, you will have something to do everyday.
Vaqti keganda shart chiqib Kroger dan qo'sht olib kelib osh qilib yeyishga nima yetsin....

As to America, is only good for materialism, so use it that way. Don't keep yourself aloned by that feature of America. Don't live, but survive.

I've forgotten that feeling...I mean i'm not that desperate and I don't think about going home as much as i used to!
My signature says everything for me: "Success is a journey, not a destination"...So why would you spend your journey by missing home, being homesick and by counting days?
Life is wonderful no matter where you are! Live it, enjoy it and share it with others!

You know just think how people are proud of you that you are here in AMerica, OVERSEAS! They believe in you and you can make it! I am in US too, but I am not homeSICK I am homeTHINK! I think all about them, but I do let my homesickness to be over me. And you can do it too dude! While in America, try not talk a lot about your homesickness and stuff just keep in your heart and talk to us, but let is do it, we need to do benefitial stuff for community and Uzbekistan, be involved , get busy, do community service talk to people, and stay active.
Love you and you can do it!!

What to do when you are homesick?

I call home so often that even don't have any news accumulated to share with them. Do that just to hear my mom and dad's voices. It helps a lot.

I was homesick and sick and sick. Right now I am totally sick or have already recovered, I don't even feel what is homesickness. The reason might be that I always feel the same way; that's it. I feel cool. When u r homesick, try to think how you really wanted to get out of ur country, to be away from ur family. Try to imagine how you will miss this place when you go back home.

Make busy schedule. Attend uni's dance courses, libraries, meet new people and make new friends. If this doesn't help use drugs.

for those who are new in this and/or still interested - one of those things you have to do is to stop comparing your life "before" and "after". scheduling is a helpful thing, but failing your classes later due to over-scheduling can cause more damage than that depression due to homesickness.
