TASHKENT, 1 December (IRIN) - When Dilnara tested HIV positive she was told by the doctor not to mix with "normal people".

Over 50 percent of young Uzbeks do not know how to use a condom correctly, whilst others do not want to use condoms. A surprisingly high number (55 percent) believe that there is nothing a person can do to avoid HIV/AIDS.

Whilst the majority of people living with HIV are in Russia and Ukraine, Uzbekistan is experiencing a dramatic rise. In 1999, just 76 cases were registered. In 2004, the number rose to 5,612, with over 2,000 new cases in that year alone, the majority under 30 years old, according to the Republican AIDS Centre in Tashkent.

Over 50% uzbek youth wasnt educated, and didnt learn what STD is.
Thats why its important to educate youth of Uzbekistan.
First we need to teach how can be HIV/AIDS transmitted. And how to use condoms. Cause some people really belive that HIV is nothing.

This one is from the WB press review of the 22/11:

"... Dow Jones writes the UN also reported that the rate of HIV infection
increased sharply in Eastern Europe and Central Asia in the last year,
particularly among youths. Ukraine and Russia registered the largest
number of new cases, while Uzbekistan also saw a dramatic spike in HIV
infection rates. Within former Soviet bloc countries, some 270,000 people
were newly diagnosed with HIV, the virus that causes AIDS. Some 62,000 in
the region died from AIDS-related causes in 2004, the report said. The
region's main problems in fighting the epidemic included a lack of medical
treatment and a stigma facing those with HIV and AIDS. The spread of the
disease has also been blamed on widespread intravenous drug use and
commercial sex. But the report also found that unprotected sex had become
a growing cause of infection. Last year, more than 30 percent of all new
reported HIV infections in Kazakhstan and Ukraine and 45 percent in
Belarus and Moldova were due to unprotected sex. Russia continues to have
Europe's largest number of HIV cases, with some 300,000 new cases
registered by the end of 2004, the report said. The actual number,
however, is believed to be much higher... "

Do we know what action is being taken by the Government to address this? Any campaigns/projects that are currently going on in Uzbeksitan? Is there a special committee on HIV/AIDS in Uzbekistan?

Please share information, if you've got any answers.
Thanks,

CD

I dont know about the government, some NGOs and Intern. orgs do. At least here it says they do.
On 26 October 2005 a national campaign to halt the rise in HIV and help those already infected, began in Uzbekistan. The campaign links local and national government, the UN system, the international community, civil society and popular personalities, in scaling-up access to prevention services, particularly to the most vulnerable groups, such as injecting drug users and sex workers. The national campaign was launched to coincide with a five-year global campaign entitled: "Unite for Children, Unite Against AIDS", launched in October 2005 by UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan, United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) head Ann Veneman and UNAIDS chief Peter Piot.
