Qatari players warm up before a training session at the Al Sadd Stadium in Doha. Qatar will take on Uzbekistan in their Asian Cup 2007 qualifying match at the Al Sadd Stadium today. The match starts at 8pm.
DOHA: A confident Qatar go into their second Group ‘F’ Asian Cup 2007 qualifying match today against Uzbekistan looking for a convincing win against their experienced rivals.

However, the host team will not take their opponents lightly despite playing the crucial group match on home soil.

Qatar, who beat hosts Hong Kong with a convincing 3-0 margin in their first Group F match last Wednesday, are wary of the “physical” threat presented by Valeri Nepomniatchi-coached Uzbekistan, who crushed Bangladesh 5-0 in a home match last week.

According to Dzemaluddin Musovic, the coach of Qatar team, his boys are bracing for a tough encounter that could see harsh tackles and less fluid football at Al Sadd Stadium today.

“I think our match against Uzbekistan will be a tough one. I have seen them play before on many occasions. They normally play a physical game with quite a few hard tackles thrown in by their players. By no means, it will be an easy match for us,” Musovic said yesterday.

“However, I would say that Uzbekistan players can play attractive football as well. Their players have a lot of experience of playing in the Russian and the Ukrainian leagues. Their game-plan revolves around good fitness. Their players are very fit for this level,” Musovic, who has been coaching Qatar team since August 2004, added.

Qatar will miss their star striker Syed Bachir (13 goals for his club Al Arabi in the QFA League) because of suspension, but Bosnian national Musovic feels his team will present an aggressive challenge to their opponents.

“We are confident of playing well at home. We normally do that because home support of fans can be beneficial to the host team. We are coming off a convincing victory (against Hong Kong). We are raring to go,” the Qatar coach said.

Uzbekistan coach Nepomniatchi, on the contrary, said that his team could be caught rusty during Wednesday’s match.
“My biggest concern is that we have not played matches in a long while. We are lacking in match practice, there’s no doubt about that. I think that could be our biggest problem tomorrow,” Nepomniatchi said after his arrival in Doha yesterday afternoon.

“My players can adjust to the local playing conditions, so our arrival only one day before the match does not bother me. Most of the players are good professionals so adjusting will not be a problem for us, but lack of match practice concerns me deeply,” the 62-year-old added.

Nepomniatchi is relying on his trusted hands in striker Maxim Shatskikh (Uzbek Player of the Year) and defender Andrev Fyodorov to deliver the goods against Qatar, whom he considers ‘play an attacking game most of the time’.

“It should be an interesting game, one which we must win,” Nepomniatchi added.
