Ya slishal chto kogda ti uchishsya oni tipa dayut prava na rabotu on a campus only 20 hour (week). Mne oni poka nerazreshayut rabotat' govoryat zakonchi snachala odin semestr pokaji sebya kak uchishsya, a potom mi tebe dadim prava na rabotu on a campus potom tipa poluchu social security. Mogu ya nayti drugiye prichini chtobi oni mne dali social security? plz help

oni ne dadut bez on-campus employment. before all the security tightening, all international students could get it. But now only if legally employed. The only possibility to get a job while you are new in US - is on-campus. Wait a bit, as they said, and then find a job. You won't be able to avoid regulations and get the SSN, as per below suggestion.

if you tell them you need it for DL, they know that DMV will be fine with a letter of rejection of SSN, i.e. having the one you can still apply for the DL. Same with bank account and apartmment rent. You are not the first international student they would be dealing with.

if you need money, try to work for cash till the semester is over and you have a right to get an on-campus job.

advice: don't even try to cheat the monster-system, otherwise you'll harm yourself

depending on where you study,you can even get SSN without prior on-campus employment.Some international offices may write you a letter,addressed to social security administration office.All you have to do is talk to your international advisor and ask them to write you a letter.I think you should be able to get it.
It's correct,you need to have a letter from your potential employer in order to get your social security card,but in some cases you can get it without this letter.

I am afraid this is not true. Last summer I worked in international students office and I know some stuff. Even if the office writes the letter (which they never do without as per INS's strict instructions) the SSA will not issue the number.

Kobe, if I were you, I would not hurry and risk.

Anyway you will need to have employment letter, as in our university, we have Work and Learn that you can work on-campus (without SSN), depending where you work, you will ask them to give you letter that you are working on-campus,... then you take all other docs+employment letter and go to SSN office

anyway, SSN office will give you social written in it "Work only with DHS Authorization" which means you need also work permit to work off campus

Do not tell them that you are going to work off-campus coz it illegal and they may not give it.
The better thing is take your I-20, passport and SSN application (filled up)
go to office and tell them you want SSN. if they ask why, tell for driver's licence or credit card,...
I went to that *** office 3-4 times, first i didnt take any letters from my on-campus work (didnt work) and then took different letter didnt work either and got letter from my coach saying I am working as a safeguard and at last they sent me SSN.
