Lately the Uzbek media have been particularly loud about the goverment's "wheat independence" policy. It was largely to support the wheat harvest season when average temperature ranges around 40-50 C. About the heat, it is hard to understand the reason why national news monopoly Axborot reports deaths from 37C heat in Western Europe. In fact, there were unofficial reports about the deaths of Uzbek citizens in overcrowded public transportation, which still remains unofficial. Meanwhile, making "their plan" for wheat harvest is a serious challenge for Uzbek farmers who has no desicion-making power about what to grow on their lands. Their "farmer" status for which they have enthusiactically paid all of their family savings couple years ago, can easily be taken away if they do not obey what the government tells them do to. That is understandble, they have their own stake in this issue.
But what about the teachers and private merchandises who has nothing in common with agriculture and "wheat independence" policy? The problem is that in some parts of Ferghana region regional administrators invented "brilliant" way of increasing productivity of wheat per hectar: collecting 20 kg of wheat from each teacher, private merchandiser, etc. Isn't it nice? They give unofficial orders to school directors, taxation officers, etc to collect 20 kg of wheat from teachers, merchandisers, etc. Anyone who refuses to make a "voluntary contribution" to this "smart" way of "wheat independence" may lose their jobs or business. Isn't it brilliant?
According to www.mish-mish.uz Ferghana region celebrated the occation of fulfilling their "wheat plan" (yes, just like during Soviet era) on television before actually fulfilling it. So, in order to "keep the honor" they decided to take away personal property of citizens by threatening to fire them from their jobs.
Viva Uzbek "leaders", viva "Independence"!!! Long live "Qonun Ustivorligi", Long live "Yurtboshi"!!!
