“This is the one jazz record owned by people who don't listen to jazz, and with good reason. The band itself is extraordinary (proof of Miles Davis's masterful casting skills, if not of God's existence), listing John Coltrane and Julian "Cannonball" Adderley on saxophones, Bill Evans (or, on "Freddie Freeloader," Wynton Kelly) on piano, and the crack rhythm unit of Paul Chambers on bass and Jimmy Cobb on drums. Coltrane's astringency on tenor is counterpoised to Adderley's funky self on alto, with Davis moderating between them as Bill Evans conjures up a still lake of sound on which they walk. Meanwhile, the rhythm partnership of Cobb and Chambers is prepared to click off time until eternity. It was the key recording of what became modal jazz, a music free of the fixed harmonies and forms of pop songs. In Davis's men's hands it was a weightless music, but one that refused to fade into the background. In retrospect every note seems perfect, and each piece moves inexorably towards its destiny. ”

Frank Sinatra —— The Reprise Collection, a deluxe four— compact disc compilation spanning nearly 30 years in the legendary performer’s recording career, will be released on Reprise Records late this month. Additionally, a three—hour video set of classic television performances by Sinatra, also titled The Reprise Collection, will be in stores in time for Christmas and Sinatra’s 75th birthday, December 12.
Containing 81 songs presented in chronological order, Frank Sinatra — The Reprise Collection begins in 1960 with “Let’s Fall in Love” and ends in 1986 with that year’s rendition of “Mack The Knife.” Among other Sinatra perennials included are “It Was A Very Good Year,” “Love And Marriage,” “Fly Me To The Moon,” “That’s Life,” “The Best Is Yet To Come,” “Summer Wind.”
“Strangers In The Night,” “My Way” and “New York, New York.” Selections for the package were taken from such Sinatra albums as Ring A Ding Ding, Sinatra and Swingin’ Brass, Moonlight Sinatra, Trilogy and The Concert Sinatra and also includes previously unreleased material.
Conductors and arrangers heard on The Reprise Collection are Johnny Mandel, Nelson Riddle, Sy Oliver, Don Costa and Neil Hefti and others as well as the big band orchestras of both Count Basie and Duke Ellington.
