Two big questions on the opening weekend of Premiership action were how Chelsea would look under new coach Jose Mourinho, and how Liverpool would cope without Michael Owen.

Chelsea can cast aside early carping about the defensive strategy in their clash with Manchester United by pointing out the simple fact that they took three points off the team that will be direct title rivals.

As for Liverpool, while Djibril Cisse scored on his debut at Spurs, if you ask me if they will miss Michael Owen, I would have to say: "Too right they will."

Let's take Liverpool first, because Owen's departure came from nowhere and has left questions being asked of both the player and the Anfield hierarchy.

Michael and his advisers have used the system well, and that is no criticism. The odds are stacked in favour of players now when it comes to negotiating contracts and this has worked in his favour.

As far as the football side of things is concerned, Liverpool will badly miss a player who has scored so many goals in what was essentially a struggling side.

When he wasn't scoring, hardly anyone else was. He has got an unbelievably good goalscoring record and it will be very tough to replace him.

It would be a very interesting exercise to remove Michael's goals from the Liverpool equation in recent seasons and see where they would have finished.

You could say if Liverpool had won the Premiership last season he might still be there, but they didn't and maybe he has looked at it and thought if he stayed another 18 months it still might not happen.

Benitez defends Owen sale

Major players - and Owen is one, make no mistake - want money, of course, but they want success and he has gone to Madrid in search of that.

And maybe Liverpool's new manager Rafael Benitez felt he wasn't worth a reported £100,000-a-week. The trick for Rafael Benitez is to find a replacement, but it's not going to be easy because there are not too many Owens out there and there is hardly any time until the transfer window closes.

Liverpool will certainly need someone because watching them at Spurs, Cisse is a bit like Michael in that was looking for space in and around the defence on the 18-yard line.

And Milan Baros was anonymous, as he has been before for Liverpool, despite his successes at Euro 2004. Young Florent Sinama-Pongolle is a long, long way away so Benitez will have to strengthen.

One man who has strengthened, spectacularly, has been Chelsea's Mourinho and he had his reward in beating Manchester United.

Much has been made of Chelsea defending deep to protect their lead. England were criticised for this in Euro 2004, but there is one major difference - they lost and Chelsea won.

At times it can be a dangerous game, but if you win people can moan all they like and it makes no difference. Liverpool did exactly the same at Spurs after dominating the first half but could not protect the lead.

Mourinho and Benitez were both known for caution at Porto and Valencia, and this is symptomatic of the way teams play on the continent. It is not the case that foreign coaches preach attack, attack, attack - unless you're Arsene Wenger that is.

But Chelsea were organised and played for each other. Some will say it was not pretty to watch, but I've seen enough already to feel they will give Arsenal a real run for their money.

As for Manchester United, three or four years ago they would have made Chelsea pay for sitting back. Not yesterday. Of course they had injury problems in attack, but I look at their midfield more than up front.

Three or four years ago they had Roy Keane, David Beckham, Paul Scholes and Ryan Giggs in their prime. The opposition would look at the team-sheet and be happy to keep them down to three, and now they say: "We can beat these."

The same happened eventually at Liverpool, but only a fool backs against Sir Alex Ferguson rising to such a challenge.

As for Arsenal, it was business as usual as they annihilated Everton at Goodison Park. It was said that the worst game you can have on the opening day is Arsenal away - I actually think it might just be Arsenal at home.

It was tough for Everton in that they had a big crowd and their expectant fans would not accept them putting eight or nine behind the ball to play for a point at home.

They had to attack and were brilliantly picked off by Arsenal on the counter. Wenger's side had pace before, but now they have got another flier in Jose Antonio Reyes, and in Cesc Fabregas they have a brilliant 17-year-old. They carried on as if the summer hadn't happened and, with Patrick Vieira to return, it was ominous.

Everton were under the microscope because so many have tipped them to go down, so they needed that result like a hole in the head.

The summer has been awful for them, and now they need to sort their finances out, work out who is running the club, then give manager David Moyes some money to spend.

I don't happen to think they will go down, but they need to get new players in. Of course, they will have Wayne Rooney fit soon and hopefully get their season up and running.

It all made for an intriguing return for the Premiership as we wait for all these questions to be fully answered in the months ahead.

PREDICTIONS OF THIS WEEK'S GAMES

All kick-offs 1500 BST (unless shown)

Saturday

Southampton v Blackburn
Kick-off 1245
Blackburn had a difficult first game against West Brom, who were playing their first game back in the Premiership and full of adrenalin.

They will be more relaxed at Southampton, able to play without the expectation that comes with playing at home.

Saints have had a difficult start to the season but must make sure that they make St Mary's a difficult place for opposition teams to visit.

Full match preview

Verdict: 1-1

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Birmingham v Chelsea
Chelsea had a difficult opening game against Manchester United, but I expect them to play a more progressive game at Birmingham.

I think they will improve as the season unfolds and the players get used to the style of play Jose Mourinho wants.

Birmingham made a bright start - drawing at Portsmouth - and I think they will be okay this season.

They are well organised and defensively strong but I just wonder where the goals will come from if Mikael Forrsell is not scoring.

Full match preview

Verdict: 1-2

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Charlton v Portsmouth
Addicks boss Alan Curbishley will have been looking for a reaction all week from his players - or at least those not away on international duty - after the 4-1 defeat at Bolton.

Charlton are slow starters but I fancy them to win at home.

Portsmouth have struggled away from home in the Premiership and I would not be at all surprised if both these teams sign more players before the transfer deadline.

Full match preview

Verdict: 2-0

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Crystal Palace v Everton

Palace got a solid point from their opening game at Norwich and in Andy Johnson they might have a goalscorer who can keep their head above water.

Everton, who had a disastrous start, face a couple of big games with Palace followed by West Brom.

They remain in turmoil and it is crucial David Moyes is given money to strengthen his squad before the transfer window shuts.

Full match preview

Verdict: 1-0

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Fulham v Bolton
Fulham are back at Craven Cottage and they will be hugely determined to mark it with a victory.

Bolton got off to a great start and are now an established Premiership side.

But I'm not convinced by new signing El Hadji Diouf.

In terms of what boosting the resources Bolton have, Diouf will probably help them but there are massive question marks over him as a Premiership player.

Full match preview

Verdict: 1-0

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Liverpool v Man City
Liverpool should have won at Tottenham and I would expect them to push on more at home and beat Man City.

I hope to see Liverpool pressing the opposition more but this season. It is early days for Rafael Benitez but he has to realise Liverpool need to change the way they played last season.

Kevin Keegan's sides are not the strongest at the back and always seem to let in the opposition.

Full match preview

Verdict: 3-1

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Newcastle v Tottenham
Last season Laurent Robert scored two unbelievable goals in this fixture.

Newcastle got a good point at Boro and their new players - Stephen Carr and Nicky Butt - have settled in well.

Tottenham, on the other hand, looked short in midfield against Liverpool.

Full match preview

Verdict: 2-1

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Man Utd v Norwich
Kick-off 1715
Norwich - back in the Premiership for the first time since 1995 - are full of early-season enthusiasm.

And this will be a harder game for Manchester United that it might initially seem on paper.

But despite all United's injury problems they have enough quality players to see them through this fixture and I simply cannot see Norwich scoring.

Full match preview

Verdict: 2-0

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Sunday

West Brom v Aston Villa
1300 BST
I expect a very tense game of few clear-cut chances.

West Brom have a team full of real scrappers and will not be beaten by anyone without a fight.

They will make life difficult for visitors to the Hawthorns.

If Aston Villa were to sign James Beattie they would have a very competitive squad, with a solid defence and strong midfield options as well as four good strikers.

Full match preview

Verdict: 0-0

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Arsenal v Middlesbrough
1605 BST

A lot of people think Middlesbrough are capable of playing very well, but Arsenal slipped effortlessly into gear against Everton.

Arsene Wenger's team have so many options even without Patrick Vieira and Sol Campbell.

Full match preview

Verdict: 2-0

ManU 18 yoshli Wayne Rooneyni £30mln (52$ USA mln) ga sotib oldi.

Man Utd in Rooney admission

Manchester United have revealed they had no plans to sign Wayne Rooney until Newcastle made a bid for the striker.
United boss Sir Alex Ferguson said he had held talks with Everton boss David Moyes about signing the England teenager at the end of last season.

But Ferguson said: "If Newcastle hadn't come in with an offer, we probably wouldn't have come in.

"We didn't think he was available. But once we knew Everton were talking to another club, we had to do something."

On Tuesday, Rooney signed a six-year contract which will tie him to Old Trafford until 30 June 2010.

And on Wednesday he admitted he had made the decision to leave Everton six weeks ago after an impressive display at Euro 2004.

Rooney said: "I made it clear that I wanted to leave Everton. Once I knew Manchester United were interested, there was only one place I was going.

"I knew that I wanted to further my career and play in the Champions League.

"After Euro 2004 I made up my mind that I had to get to a bigger club. I wanted to play with the big players week in, week out."

Rooney's move from Merseyside has led to a heavy backlash from the Liverpool public, with abusive graffiti in various places in the city.

And the 18-year-old admitted it had been a difficult time.

He said: "It's been a tough week for everyone concerned with me. It was difficult because I've supported Everton all my life. I'd played there for two years which made it even more difficult.

"It's tough for Evertonians because I'd come through and they saw me as their own. But I wanted to move on with my career."

Ferguson said he had been closely watching Rooney since he was a 14-year-old and that he was excited about the players' potential.

"His age is a great thing," said Ferguson. "And Manchester United couldn't afford to miss him."

United's boss also said he was likely to play Rooney, who he said was two to three weeks away from fitness, behind a striker.

i guess it was a good business to Everton too. Cashing 18 y.o. for £30 can not be bad business. However the terms are not the prettiest: £10 mln now, £10 mln next year and the rest due to apperances.

Well, the same old song of numpties 'What IF Roman gets bored?'
This word probably has been said millions of times already if not billions :)
Can not you think of any better options to keep your hopes alive besides that 'IF Roman' word?
Only a few weeks ago people were talking about that Chelsea has no team spirit, but Chelsea proved that it is them who has the most strong spirit in the Premiership.
Only a few weeks ago people were saying that Chelsea is the most boring. But Chelsea has proved they are the most attacking and interesting team with consecutive 4-0 wins including defeat of Newcatle and importantly not risking the defence.
Only a few weeks ago people were saying that Chelsea will slip and will have a blip, but Chelsea has proved that their 'blip' was far gone away with 1-0 defeat and few draws. Somehow that 'blip' keep coming to Manure and Arse all the way round
I think I would better stop here making points of which I dont have to, because it is very clear to everybody.

You can not joke with a team who conceded only 8 goals (!!!) in 23 games (!!!)

The question is not if, it is when. And - he bought the team not because he loves it so much, but purely for political reasons. ;)

And for the second time, ManU is much better team in a sense that it is a classic team with good solid sporting values. They are the best in the English premiership, no matter what.

Roman has bought the club and invested a lot. But this investment is not refundable!
Now whatever happens, CFC will not and can not fall with such big financial muscle.
Therefore the words you are in love with- 'IF Roman' and 'WHEN Roman' do not decide anything :)
PL had had many 'bests' like Everton and Liverpool. And ManUre is becoming just one of them.
The arrival of new SuperPower Chelsea in the world football predicts downfall of the Red Devils :)
MU is the history, Chelsea is the Future!

Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho has said that his high-flying team are now virtually assured of winning their first Premiership title.
Mourinho's side have lost just once in the Premiership, boast a 10-point lead over Arsenal and are a further point clear of Manchester United.

"There is so much ground for the teams chasing us to make up," Mourinho told Chelsea TV.

"If it goes from 10 to 12 or 13 points then maybe it will be over."

Mourinho continued: "Could you ever imagine that with all the new players and a new coach we could be 10 clear at this stage?

"Of course 10 points is 10 points, it is better than seven and it is better than five.

"But if one day we lose a game or two points and the gap goes from 10 to seven or eight, we are ready to accept it as natural and keep going, controlling the distance."

Mourinho took over as Chelsea manager last summer after guiding Porto to Champions League glory as well as the Portuguese league title.

Chelsea have conceded just eight goals in 23 Premiership games this season and have won their last six games in the league.

The gap between Cheslea and rivals Arsenal or Manchester United means the Blues would have to drop at least 10 points from their remaining 15 games if they are to be caught.

Arsenal is great team! The only prob is Wenger. HE is a person sort of can't keep the anger inside. Whenever you see, he is misjudging FA, MU, Chelsea or even his players. There was times when he said: "FA is designing Premiership Fixtures for MU" these were times when MU topped the premieership most of the times. This year he claimed FA is not fair body, MU is cheaters, from his players he said lots of bulshit about Jens(GK). Better they need to descipline the coach himself.
But the Arsenal YToung team is really good. I like when I sea actions from Fabregas, Van Persie, Jeffers, Cole. They are solid, but mentally not right brought -up by the coatch. Some of them ca't have confidence that they will play in the team! (f.e. Almunia, Leman, Cygan, Pires & etc )
He is being the mostly a big headache from my point of veiw!

Actually it is a shame for MU to play 2-0 with full power Howard, Phil Neville, Gary Neville, O'Shea, Fortune, Giggs (Saha 70), Miller (Fletcher 66), Scholes, Djemba-Djemba (Silvestre 80), Ronaldo, Rooney against a village team with part time village boys.

"К настоящему моменту они выглядят практически неуязвимыми - команда хорошо организована, дисциплинированна и нацелена на результат. Мне стоит перестать восхвалять соперника, прежде чем я не начну окончательно бояться их. Надеюсь, мои игроки не будут обращать на это внимания, потому что мы сейчас сами в довольно неплохой форме", - заметил Фергюсон.

Draw. Mne kajetsa shto eti dva silneyshiyi komandi English premier ligi budut igrat ostorojno, shto bi ne razocharovat svoih bolelshikov. A nichya eto lutshe chem porajeniya(konechno, huje chem pobeda). Ya uveren shto Abramovish trebuyet pobedi i pobeda nad ManUtd i Arsenalom toje samoe kak vigrat chempionat. No, nedlia Maurinyo, on obeshal zdelat vse shto bi Chelsea vigral chempionat i on nebudet dlia etogo riskovat.

1-0 for Chelsea. K sojeleniyu epoha ManUtd uje pozadi...Vse esho v sostave est takiyi prekrasniyi igroki kak Rooney ili zvezda portugalskogo futbola Ronaldo i toje samoe letuchiy gollandes. No, mne kajetsa dannoe moment Chelsea pokazivayet lutshuyu igru chem krasniyi dyavoli ili kanoniri.

The 'so what point' is that any team can succeed if they get good players, good coach, effective style and positive reforms. These are the dividing sticks between good teams, regular teams and bad teams.
And to succeed, someone does not have to have fake Ronaldo or Granny-lover Shrek, remember a poor and small club Porto winning the Champions League.

du wanna say there were no good players in poor, small Porto? Deco, Ricardo Carvalho, Nuno Valente, Sergio Conceicao? These are key players of Potuguse National team. ..and you know that Potugal was second on EuroChemp. Also what bout their coach? Any team, if financely able, can have the star players of the world, but without good coach...like Real Madrid. I think you re wrong here comparing ManU with Balckburn or Norwich. ManU shows a good play, this is enough to be on top five, maybe, but to get championship...
First of all Ferguson has to leave his post. Heis a good coach, but gave to red devils everything he could, more he cant. Also some players must go away with coach...otherwise, ManU becomes average team, wins outsiders, looses with grands....

of course Deco, Ricardo Carvalho, Nuno are good players but dont forget that they became so famious and wanted by big clubs after they showed some serious display in European football arena. The fame did not came by itself. Who would predict Porto will win all the Galactico collections including ManU at that time?
And how about Greece last year?
These are teams who succeded only by hard work and stunning fights. That is how they produced football stars like Deco and Carvalho.
And a good manager is a must for a good team, it is not the point of contradiction.
Ferguson is not a bad coach and I dont think he needs to be replaced, it is just his opponents are too strong.

Barclays Premiership Results:

Birmingham 2 - 1 Southampton
Blackburn 0 - 1 Chelsea
Everton 1 - 0 Norwich
Fulham 1 - 1 Aston Villa
Man City 1 - 1 Newcastle

The game Blackburn played against Chelsea was one of the worst so far I have seen.
Blackburn was nowhere near to professionalism. They looked like a bunch of ill-mannered street junkies, pulling, pushing and kicking the opposite side out of the pitch. Overall, it was a demonstration of a nastyness and madness in football.

It was a ruined match, not just a match, but a fight. Shame!

For Chelsea side, it was yet another proof of consistancy, solidity, and brilliance. Another clean sheet, yet another win! Now the team is magnificient 11 points clear of the second placed rivals for the first time.

The team and the manager must be smelling the Championship now.

The ones who have been waiting for Chelsea's 'blip' might be greatly disappointed, and I hope very much that they will remain bitter and disappointed for many happy years

In England real football starts from mid February, it means, the 'best' teams have to play in more then 2-3 tournaments in the same time. Premiership, FA cup, Carling Cup, CL, UEFA Cup...

Chelsea is great team, but future is always unpredictible. They lost Wayne and Robben for the next few games...hell knows how they are gonna beat Barcelona.
MU is back with Van Nistelrroy, Silvestre, Saha. HAve you seen MU's game against Everton, they just rocked!!!

otning o'limi itning bayrami bo'layaptimi diman.

never mind, it Chelsea is not God's special team, and they can lose too. There is nothing extraordinary.

teams lose and teams win, Chelsea is experiencing the test, and this test has to be passed by everybody who is up to great future.

FA cup is lost, key players are injured, likes of Robben, Bridge, Duff, Gallas, and goalkeeper Gudicini suspened for red card, plus Drogba's condition is not certain. And tomorrow there is a crucial game against the best of Europe- Barcelona.

Without a doubt there are many people who are extremely happy with what has happened to Chelsea, but I suppose they must be sorry for their own weak souls, sport is a fair game and needs honesty and dignity. You can not count on the injuries and other problems of your rival for your success. This is disgusting.

Personally I have always felt sorry for Manure and Arse when they have lost their players to injuries, as it has happened with van Nistelrooy, Campbell, Vieira etc. And wished they stay fit as they are they key representatives of the FCs. But these things happen, and they are not at someone's hand.

I hope Blues will overcome all the problems with high spirit they are facing . And prove they are the team to beat.

Chelsea has landed their first silverware in years.
It was a very entertaining and fantastic game.
I was quite calm when Liverpool scored their goal in the 1st minute. And then was convinced that Chelsea will win the game just in about 10 minutes. Chelsea were playing excellent and dominated the ball and the game while Liverpool in defence playing only counter-attack and desperate to hang on to their only goal.
Then came the goal thanks to Ferreira's brilliant throw-in and Gerrard's mistake.
Drogba's goal and Kezman's last strike sealed the very well deserved victory for Chelsea.
It was a great come back for Chelsea after 2 consecutive defeats in Newcastle and Barcelona against in form Liverpool side.

In PL Mancs seem to be desperate to hang on to the tail of run away Chelsea and working hard under pressure, let us see for how long they can manage to do it.

Champions Chelsea came from behind to beat Manchester United 3-1 and create a new Premiership points record of 94.

One of the best games Chelsea has played this season. What a goal by Tiago from 35 yard as ManU goalkeeper watched Tiago's stunner.
Gudjonhnsen's second and Cole's third goals sealed another victory and pushed Chelsea to 20 point difference from ManU.

Glory Chelsea :D

Chelsea to pay price of their "jungle rules".
United confident dossier will persuade Fifa to make Chelsea back off Mikel

Daniel Taylor
Friday September 30, 2005
The Guardian (http://www.guardian.co.uk/)

Manchester United's solicitors will today submit a comprehensive 40-page document to Fifa outlining their grievances against Chelsea in the protracted dispute over the signing of John Obi Mikel, the Nigerian teenager regarded by Sir Alex Ferguson as one of the most naturally gifted footballers he has seen. After three months of gathering evidence against the Premiership champions, United's lawyers will detail why they believe they have a watertight agreement with Mikel and the chain of events that, in the words of their assistant manager Carlos Queiroz, led to the 18-year-old being "almost kidnapped" and Chelsea taking "football into the jungle". http://football.guardian.co.uk/News_Story/0,1563,1581745,00.html
