Полное имя Омара Хайяма – Гияс ад-Дин Абуль Фатх Омар ибн Ибрахим Хайям Нишапури.

Творчество Омара Хайяма – удивительное явление в истории культуры народов всего человечества. Его труды в области физики, математики, астрономии переведены на многие языки мира и имеют историческое значение. Философия Омара Хайяма предвосхитила идеи гуманистов эпохи Возрождения («Цель творца и вершина творения – мы»). Он ненавидел и обличал существующие порядки, религиозные догмы и пороки, царившие в обществе. Его стихи (рубаи) «жалящие как змея» до сих пор покоряют своей предельной ёмкостью, лаконичностью, образностью, простотой изобразительных средств и гибким ритмом.

Рубаи – четверостишие, которое ввел в поэзию Рудаки. Омар Хайям утвердил внутренние законы рубаи, выгранил и трансформировал эту форму в новый философско-афористический поэтический жанр. Каждое его четверостишие – это маленькая поэма. Некоторые исследователи полагают, что, подобно античным стихам, рубаи пелись одно за другим; отделенные паузой – как куплеты песни. Поэтические образы и идеи получают развитие от куплета к куплету, нередко контрастируя, образуя парадоксы.

Рубаи Омара Хайяма провозглашают свободу личности, ее независимость от Бога и царя, осуждают ханжество и лицемерие, излучают глубочайшую мудрость, удивительное жизнелюбие и искрометное веселье.

В западной культуре рубаи узнали благодаря переводу английского поэта Эдварда Фитцджеральда (1859 годом датировано первое издание). Поэт объединил 101 из своих переводов хайамовских рубаи в поэму, выдержавшую в XIX веке 25 изданий. Именно перевод Фитцджеральда лег в основу многих переводов на русский язык.

В настоящем издании представлены избранные рубаи в переводах с персидско-таджикского В. Державина, К. Бальмонта, Л. Некоры, Н. Тенигиной и И. Тхоржевского.
