Sylvia Nasar was born in Bavaria in 1947 to a German mother and Uzbek father. Her family immigrated to the United States in 1951 and lived in New York and Washington, D.C. before moving to Ankara, Turkey in 1960. In 1965, she returned to the U.S. on her own and attended Antioch College where she majored in literature. She also spent a year at the University of Munich. After working for several years, she entered the Ph.D. program in economics at New York University, completing a master’s degree in 1976. For four years, she did research with Nobel Laureate Wassily Leontief at the Institute for Economic Analysis.
At 35, Nasar became a journalist. Since 1983, she has been a writer at Fortune, a columnist at U.S. News & World Report and, until recently, a reporter at The New York Times where she covered economics. She and her husband, Darryl Mcleod, also an economist, have three children, Clara, Lily and Jack, and live in Tarrytown, New York.

A Beautiful Mind, her first book, won the 1998 National Book Critics’ Circle Award for Biography, was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize in biography, and inspired a feature movie directed by Ron Howard, as well as a PBS television documentary. Nasar, who edited The Essential John Nash, is currently working on a book about 20th century economic thinkers, and has recently been named the first John S. and James L. Knight Professor of Journalism at the Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism.

Nice and pleasant to know about Sylvia Nasar, who shares same blood with us. Meanwhile, I'm curious about her attitude to Uzbekistan (and Central Asia) nowadays. And what is this her new "Grand Pursuit" about?

Her real name is Zulfiya.

Her father raised a strong sense of love twards uzbek nation in her. I've heard so many good things about Sylvia Nasar. I even wrote her a letter on my mom's behalf. She is very pleasant person, never turns anyone down. Her students love her...And I do consider her one of the perls in a string of uzbek authors.
After all, she doesn't have to write a novel about Alpomish to become one.
Lekin menimcha uni modern uzbek writer deb atash ham unchalik o'rinli bo'lmasa kerak.
Uzbek writer bo'lish uchun uning millati ahamiyatga u qadar molik emas, axir u o'zbek tilida asar yozmagan yoxud yozbeklar dardini qog'ozga tushirmagan bo'lsa kerakku.

Sylvia Nasar - 4 ta Oscarga sazovor bo'lgan "A Beautiful Mind" filmi uchun asos bo'lgan asar yaratib, mashhur bo'lib ketganidan, unda O'zbek qoni borligi uchun ham xursand bo'lsak arziydi.
Ammo, Sylvia Nasar aslo O'zbek yozuvchisi hisoblanmaydi. Uning O'zbek Tili va Adabiyoti uchun hech qanaqa hissasi qo'shilmagan.
Mavzu nomi o'zgartirildi. (Yanglishmovchiliklar kelib chiqmasligi uchun...)

uzbekworld.com : "The film which won this year's Oscar for best film, 'A beautiful mind,' was based on a book written by Sylvia Nasar, a woman of Uzbek origin, who went to secondary school and later to high school in Ankara. During that time, her father, Ruzi Nasar, was the Central Intelligence Agency's (CIA) station chief in Turkey. On various occasions she has told reporters that she spent her childhood in Ankara, and that this was the most interesting time in her life."
even though she was born in Germany and raised in Turkey, she is considered as an american writer... her father was an uzbek... here is his story from tugrulkeskingoren.blogspot.com :
