View Full Version : What would be the main criteria to select particular movie?
On weekends we quite often face the dilemma-which movie to watch?
What is the main reason that would make you chose particular movie?
Critics review, friend's suggestion, commercial,....?

I ususally listen to a zelous DVD collector friend of mine. He has seen thousands of movies, and he usually gives me 3-4 DVDs from his collection. At times, I follow the movie critics choice, sometimes i do it with my personal taste, like when I chose to watch "East is East" or "Catch Me If You Can". But the utmost true story is a good friend of mine gives DVDs to watch, mostly from old days collection. f.e. Lion, the greatest escape, once upon a time i america, k-pax, green mile, scent of a woman.
At times, you could just simply start watching all the movies of your favourite actor/actress, like I do sometimes, for instance about Kavin Spacey, Robert De Niro, Al Pacino, Tom Hanks.

Agree. A great actor/actress is crucial when I choose a movie.
To your list I'd also add:
1) Denzel Washington. Honestly, I think all of his movies are excellent. Training Day, Fallen, Man On Fire are one of my favorite movies of all time.
2) Matt Damon. "Good Will Hunting"
3) Don Cheadle. "Crash" and "Hotel Rwanda"
4) Ben Kingsley
5) Morgan Freeman.
6) Meryl Streep. Amazing actress.
7) Jack Nicholson. "One Who Flew Over Cukoo's Nest" - movie which will be relevant for all generations to come.

For choosing a movie, I usually seek to clarify several things.
When I heard about a movie, first thing I do is to go to Yahoo Movies webpage and look for some info about the movie:
- Who is its director? What are the other movies shot by him? Usually, good directors make good movies. FOr example, when I saw "Man on Fire" by Tony Scott, I was eager to watch Deja Vu by the same director. And, I wasn't deceived.
- Who are the main actors? Films with Denzel Washington, Al Pacino, De Niro, Jean Reno, Mel Gibson are usually good. As these actors are quite expensive, usually only good directors can afford to hire them.
- What was the box-office result of the film. Titanic, Lords of the Rings, Caribbean Pirates are all box office successes and one enjoys watching them. But, this criteria is relative one. Because, Borat, the most disgusting film, and one of few films I couldn'tt finish is a box office succes :(
- I also look at the opinions of movie reviews and users left there. But, usually movie reviews' opinions obey financial intersts, so always there is a considerable gap between the professional reviews and reviews of individuals which can be useful for choosing a film.
- Sometimes, I choose films randomly and try my chance :)
Movie reviews: www.exler.ru - anything above 4 will do, movies.yahoo.com - almost anything above A- (B+) will do.
Delf.
1- friends suggestions.
2-commercials.
3-www.imdb.com
4-some scenes I've seen before.
5-the movie stars.
