AFAIK, you would need to apply for Transit visa, usually given for the period of 6 months, It's reasonable to apply from US, in your case, I suppose. Please refer to the British Official Visa website (http://www.ukvisas.gov.uk/servlet/Front?pagename=OpenMarket/Xcelerate/ShowPage&c=Page&cid=1006977150097)to find the more precise information regarding your stance.
From 13 November 2005 all non-visa nationals - except British nationals without right of abode in the UK - require entry clearance for all stays of more than six months.
A "grace period" will operate until 13 January 2006. During this time any passenger arriving at a UK port, who otherwise qualifies for entry but does not have the necessary entry clearance, will be admitted. They will be granted entry for six months only and they will then have to apply to the Home Office in the UK for a Residence Permit to extend this stay. The Home Office will charge a fee for this. After 13 January 2006 passengers arriving without the necessary entry clearance will be refused entry.

Thank you all !!! I found these info and links you gave me very useful. It seems a legal status in the US is the most important in this case.I can provide the Brithish Embassy with a valid I-20 from my school and a reasonable purpose when I will be applying for the transit visa.It should be ok,I hope.
