A ROW has broken out in women's football over whether Muslim players can wear their religious headgear during matches.
FA officials say they want to encourage more people into the game but under rules set by the International Football Association Board, scarves such as the Hijab are not supposed to be be worn.
Individual referees are left to decide whether to let women wear the headgear and flout regulations, or whether to send OFF.
The confusion is putting British Muslim women off playing and could mean that national sides such as Iran will face losing players. The international board -made up of FIFA and the English, Scottish, Welsh and Irish FA's has still not made an official decision on the issue.
Rimla Akhtar, chairwoman of the UK's Muslim Women's Sport Foundation, accused football bosses of dragging their heels over the issue.
She said: " The International Football Association Board has not consulted the people who are directly affected by it Muslim women."
The Hijab and other religious headgear such as the turban are not listed in the international board's rules as necessary kit.

Controversial kit: the Muslim hijab headscarf

Question: for my Brothers and Sisters in Islam.
(Hadith and Sunnah)
Can Muslim women play sports with their veil?

I cowardly refuse to discuss this, but I can contribute a link:

Look especially for "Aussie Muslim Women Footballers Can Play With Hijab"

http://www.thehijabshop.com/information/article1.php

I personally don't have anything against the hijab, but this question is about allowing or disallowing rules in our society with many ramifications following from that.

So, from my viewpoint, it's entirely ok to wear a hijab. That's my humble opinion.

I know this question will stear up a lot of discussion. If not in this forum then elsewhere.

Sports and hijab is also an Iranian thing as many women do sports there (not only football but also karate and the like) and in Iranian TV show up those girls doing the same gymnastics programs as in Western TV (mainly in the US) only with girls wearing a hijab and a headband to fix it.

So there is enough political and cultural background with this question that goes really over my head.

Seems that most people in this forum are like me: not female, not muslim, not playing football ... :lool:
