To <OPTIMIST>:

FTSE100 does not necessarily mean that the initial index started with 100. It only means that the index includes first 100 largest listed firms! Each company is weighted according to either its book value (legal capital) or total assets (don't remember which one for sure).
To your knowledge, there are also FTSE50 and FTSE250 indeces. ;)

To FREEMAN: to correspond indeces with currencies is a nonsense. Have you done any basic finance?

you have misunderstood me, i did not say that FTSE 100 meant it started from 100,

I know what FTSE 100 is about, :)

All I want to say is that when constructing an index and assigning weights, the initial index starts from 100, 1000 or even 10000, maybe even 1, just to make things easier, that's it,

In FTSE 100, each company is weighted in relation to its market capitalisation. (just for remark)

i don't see any movement covariance between a currency (such as DOLLAR) and a corresponding index (DJ),

probably turkish financists use term "cents" instead of "points".

also "cent" does not necessarily means US monetary unit (1/100 of a buck)....

dow jones at 10259.74 means that if you bought 30 stocks** in 1926 (imho) you would have paid 100 bucks, and if you want to sell them today you would get 10,259 bucks and 74 cents.
