View Full Version : Ask an American!

I thought I would open a thread for anyone interested here to ask questions from an American. Ask anything you like and I will try my best to get an answer. I can also try to explain sports that may seem to make no sense at all.

Just a few simple rules:

1. Please nothing about immigration because I have no idea.

2. I am not George Bush, nor do I have power of any kind. So no asking me to change foreign or domestic policies.

3. I have heard of Uzbekistan before, so you don't have to dumb down your posts too much just because I am an American.

4. No questions or comments about my family. :?

5. No petty name calling.

6. Please don't write in Russian.

(I will add more as necessary)

Well this answer will vary from family to family. I would say in general it is for a few main reasons.

1. In the US vegetables and fruits that are available at the grocery store taste terrible usually.

2. People are lazy and don't want to prepare foods from scratch or are too busy. The cost of living in the US doesn't generally allow many families to have stay at home moms. I would say this is getting worse also.

3. Unfortuately the worst food for your body is the cheapest and sometime tastes really good.

PS. I don't think I eat many vegeatble from cans. I personally prefer beans from a can becuase cooking beans for hours is not fun nor is it an efficient use of electricity.

being dumb is a godgiven quality or a skill. that is acquired over some time? (not serious question)

if the second is true, how long did it take for you? (serious question)

I guess this is why I don't usually open threads.

ok tell me: dont you guys get cold wearing flip-flops in winter? and in general, i get (positively) amazed how light you dress when its freaking cold outside.

Very good question.

The answer is people that dress like this generally don't spend much time outside. It is not like they walk or stand outside for a half an hour like this right? Anywhere you go is way too hot inside. People usually drive everywhere. So I think the reason is because people are in climate controlled places most of the time and only outside for a few minutes. Also, Americans don't have the same fear of cold making them ill. My roomate in college wore shorts and sandals for 4 years.

Depends who you are talking to. At any business it is clearly not sincere. It is just "customer service" which I guess is supposed to make custmers feel better or something. College students, on the other hand, do generally seem to be happy most of the time so maybe they are actually smiling because they want to. I personally walk around with a scowl on my face at all times. And in pictures, people just feel it looks better to get a picture while smiling.

Now that could be two things. Either they are flirting with you, or it is the best way to break an akward moment with someone you don't know. I personally would prefer someone smile at me then just stare at me. Now you have me thinking about whether I would smile at random people in public. Sorry I guess I don't have a good answer to this one.

Very good question. Unfortunately I have never drank a cup of coffee in my life so I don't know. But it seems to me that some people go to Starbucks several times a day. That must add up. Here at work only two or three people drink coffee but they can go through 2-3 pots in a day. Its an addiction like anything else.

I can answer the question too. Because western work pattern differs significantly from that in many other countries. Here, in the west, people work hard (what I see around and that's my PPO). Coffeinne boosts up the energy and keeps mind working.

I too, drink at least 2 cups every day: one when I just come to the office early in the morning to completely wake up and the other after lunch not to feel sleepy. Sometimes, I have third at about 3:30-4 pm to spur my mind.

To be honest I gt really tired of the super cold places in the summer. It feels like you need to bring a jacket with you even when it is 100 outside. To be fair when I visit your home state I am very happy to get inside in that AC.

How would you describe an average American?

I don't think that is possible. For example, every question so far has not related to me at all (although I guess I wear shorts and sandals in the winter sometimes). I recognize that I am weird, but I think Americans vary more than most cultures. There seem to be some values and ideas which are favored by a majority, but I am not sure there is an average American. In my neighberhood the average person is probably black or hispanic, near the poverty line, with children, lower education, and generally politically liberal or democrat.

I have a question. I've been getting very cute and nice sticky labels with my address from some charitable US organization whose website I once visited. They send them as a courtesy and ask if I could contribute.

Last time the ask was for some children. This time its for paralyzed US veterans. There are pictures and testimonials of the people. And those dozens of nicely made personalized labels..

I am stuck....experiencing emotional discomfort...

a) If I contribute: 1) I would be supporting people who've been fighting; 2) As I am not yet in a position to make frequent contributtions, I think I would rather help needy people in Uzbekistan who do not have as protective government as american veterans do.

b) I would really want to use the stickers, but I feel guilt if I do so without contributing.

c) If I dont use them, I should trash them. But I do understand that the organization has spent X amount of resources to print them. They made the investement hoping to yield higher returns..

So what should I do in this principle and moral-wise tricky situation?

Hold on Nezabudka, I am answering in the order I receive them. ;)

Send in $10. :D It is usually children's hospitals that send those out. Bt I guess veteran hospitals need money too. Those veterans aren't as protected as you think. They are used and thrown out. :( Just search the internet sometime for vet hospitals and see what kind of awful things you read. These are people with mental issues, mssing limbs, or unexplainable illnesses that are being treated in sketchy conditions. If they were taking such care of the veterans would they be begging for money by sending out address labels? ;)

Veterans were most likely fighting based on the recent history of the American military. Just remember it is usually people with no education and no prospects that are recruited to go fight. Some people have to make choices to better their lives and I do not make judgements because I do not live their lives. I am fortunate enough that I never had to join the military.

If it really bothers you then you can give to the children's hospital. I can't imagine you have any problems with them. I gave to St. Judes Children's Cancer Hospital. I am sure my $10 really did a lot. :)

9/11, and other tragedies turn into a show of feelings, emotions, stupid slogans, candle ceremonies, flags, hugs, etc. It's like a gay pride parade, and I mean it in a good way. :D

Or, a similar question that I would ask:

If you wee to be born again and the re-birth would be under strict conditions. That is, you had a luck (comparing to people from the poor countries) of being born in a prosperous country with all the convenience and subsidized food, and now you would have to try how it is being a citizen of a developing world.

So my question is:

Which of the countries with p/c GDP no higher than $600 would you pick to be born?

PS: Dont have a specific data, but I guess countries responding to the criteria are in Africa and Asia. Uzbekistan is $600 smth, I guess.

PPS: 1) Imagine if that were true. 2) I think a comedy movie with the same scenario would be good - a spoiled american is reborn in a poor country and have clear memories on his/her previous life. :)

Baseball. I was a baseball fan as a child so I will try to explain it. It's a simple and fun game at its most basic. Throwing a ball and trying to hit it is really fun. Children start out playing it early and it can be fun to play. I was personally always scared of the ball. I guess since people grow up with it as a child they learn to love it. I don't know. It's annoying. I would counter with an argument that people are melodramatic everywhere. They might not get the same constant stimuli like Americans. Part of it is also the commercialization of the US. Somehow people dying turns into a great business for anyone selling crap that has to do with America or 9/11.

I have a question too, why americans tend to buy a car with super heavy engine in? Ok they can but there are extreemly heavy patrols for who's abusing speeding limits, i guess it was 120 miles on hour.

Also is this true that you cant buy gasoil from many petrol stations in us because gasoil engines arent that much used out there?

Americans love power and speed. I don't think there are really that many policeman around and it is usually just at special times. Speeding tickets are not that expensive either so some people don't even care about paying them.

That is not true about the gas stations. They are still everywhere.

Yeah, he had quite an imagination, typical american way of thinking.

Another one: Why do you like uzbeks more than kazaks, if not, why do you think kazaks are better than uzbeks, if not, why ?

also why do think it is better to be tadjik in US than being kyrgiz.

Thank you.

I have no particular opinion on who is better than who. Its more based on an individual basis.

where is an answer to my question?

melo

I would be born in Cuba.

Another point: we do not have subsidized food here in the US. Our food is probably ten times as expensive as food in the developing world. It is also full of harmful chemicals. I don't see any of that as a benefit.

PS- Are you calling me spoiled without ever meeting me? :? I would gladly change places with most of you based on what you guys talk about your lives and childhoods. ;) I don't believe I have the same opportunities as many of you.

In which ways have you been disadvantaged compared to people born in the US? I would guess many employers and universities favor foreigners over Americans for several reasons. I would also say that without superior education and experience it is becoming very difficult to get a normal paying job in the US. Companies prefer to move all production overseas instead of pay an American worker enough to live.

I would also say that culture, lifestyle, nutrition and education in the US is generally bad for children's development. Are you really sad you missed out on all of that fun?

I have only been in airports in Europe actually. I don't think that counts. And I was also in Istanbul as a tourist. I am not sure most places in the US are going to be less conservative than Germany actually. Its probably the opposite actually. Most places in the US are very conservative. Not sure about comparing the seriousness of the two. :D Engish is one of the ugliest sounding languages in the world, but it sounds beautiful compared to German. So that is one thing to keep in mind. I would also say nothing can be wose than German music. The weather is probably an improvement in most places in the US. Those are the main advantages I can think of.

Hey Melo,

Got a question here --(someone might have already asked ) -- unless you think it's too personal, who you will vote for in 2008? Dems? Reps? Who specifically? And do you, as an American, believe in universal health care as proposed by Clinton? Do you think it's something doable? And if there is universal health care, do you think it would mean that the US is becoming more and more leftist? (it turned out to be not one question but several, however, would appreciate your asnwers)

FInally I have something I can answer. I will probably not vote for the candidate for either party. I personaly am against the idea of political parties (as it is throuoghly stupid, counterproductive, and very undemocratic). But I am also realistic and if there was a decent candidate or a terrible one (Guliani) I may vote just to ensure they win (or lose). Clinton is scary to me. Gulianai is the scariest of the candidates. Basically all of the republicans except Ron Paul are unelectable to me. I would probably not be for Obama or Clinton either (unless Guliani has some chance of winning). My personal favorites would be Edwards, Paul, and Kucinich.

The fact the US does not have universal healthcare should make it a 3rd world nation in my opinion. I don't believe it is possible in the US because there are too many financial interests at stake to change anythng or compromise for the good of everyone. That goes to all elements (not just healthcare) of society actually. :?

Watching foxnews I simply get mad of how they feed their crap as if it was news. There are tens of reasons why it happens, twisted facts, selfcensorship, offensive words towards everyone non-republican and etc. Does an average american feel the same way?

You will probably say something like `Oh, it depends on the viewer, blah blah`.

Second question. Why do americans think they live in the best country in the world?

Most would answer `We live in a democratic country, strongest economy and blah blah`. Stupidos, you don`t know what is democracy and what you have is not much different from what we used to have back in USSR.

Does an average american know that his country is the most hated state in the world, according to statistics?

`We don`t give a damn!!!` :)

And why some americans say they are canadians when they travel outside US? Does it develop complex, or the complex is already there, or is it a fear of being hated?

Melo, you don`t need to answer. It is just rhetorics of a person who doesn`t like many things about your country. And believe me, in my poliscience classes, here in Canada, poor those who say they are americans. They either have to take far far-left position themselves, or hide their identity.

Well I will start off with Canada is full of America's rejects anyways. :lool:

Fox News is about controlling peoples views, not the news. Enough said. Sure some people believe that stuff. Some people here on the forum believed that thing about cockroach eggs on the envelope glue. What can I say?

Well Americans believe they live in the best country because there life is generally not affected much by anything that goes on in the world. It is very easy to not care about politics or anything else when you can make a good salary and have whatever hobbies you want. The real world hardly affects Americans and their lifestyles. ;) So being the richest country in the world has its benefits even if people don't understand they are being screwed to make the rich richer.

People that say they are Canadians outside the US are losers. I hope they talk with a Canadian accent too. Morons that hate me because I am an American are as stupid as George Bush and the Fox News people. Before you hate me get to know something about me first.

Finally I am not sure if the average American knows it is the most hated country in the world. Generally when they go on vacation in Florida, New York, California, or Mexico nobody really shows much anger towards them.

What is the capital of Canada?

How did president Lincoln die?

в Китае - что такое мнение,
в Западной Европе - что такое нехватка,

в Латинской Америке не знали, что такое опрос,

Personally I don't care too much about foreign governments. I don't really believe in globalization or imperialism so you are probably asking the wrong guy. So basically I don't care about Iran or their nuclear program and if the US would just not interefere with every country' government I would be feel safer. Iran can worry about their own government. It's not my problem.

6. People believe whatever they are told on TV. Generally I think people look at Iran as an uncivilized dangerous country in the middle east (and they have no idea where it is  ) . But, I would say people are not interested in further war at this time. That all being said Americans are overly patriotic and may be easily tricked into reasons for another war. The government in its current state can do whatever it wants regardless of what ordinary Americans think anyways. We like to call this freedom and democracy . Just my opinions.

To be honest I don't really like any of the candidates that will win the primaries. To me it seems like a big game between them so I have no idea. It's almost like they get together and decide what stupi things they will say next. I have no idea why anyone thinks Obama is muslim or what that has to do with anything. For a country that pretends to have seperation of churh and state they sure talk about being christian a lot. Very good question! I have no idea why Americans love animals more than people. In fact, it is much easier to raise money for animal charities than ones that take care of people. The funniest thing is to see how much money and time people spend on their animals. Some people seem to replace children with their pets. Sorry, I have no ideas on this one.

I never heard Mexicans cross the border in twos. Everything is better with a partner I guess. Also I have never seen a Mexican without their famiy before. Maybe they are just very family oriented and have to be with their spouse at all times. Sorry I am way out of my expertise here.

Very easily. In most countries basic services like education, healthcare, and basic living needs are not big business made to make profit. In the US nothing is done without the idea it will make someone rich. I think this is generally done at the expense of poor people (including their health).

I guess the problem is everyone is learning english and the economy of the US is still the strongest. People are not forced to go overseas to work and if they do they can usually speak English in other countries too. Not a good reason, but my best guess. I can only speak English. :uups:

Well, its not only about having a strong economy, or having a need or being forced to go to a different country to work or study per say.

It's just to learn something different. Having broader outlook.

Though I am not melo , I just want to share what I know regarding this question, I had arguement with one person in this issue.

I don't know why americans don't wash their face and hands before eating in the morning. It must be a culture.

But, I would like to talk about washing of teeth (whether before or after eating), as it does not relate only americans. Some people wash their teeth immidiately after waking up (before breakfast) and then do their breakfast and then go out (to school, to work), while others wash their teeth after finishing their breakfast, like myself.

General idea behind the washing of teeth is to keep it clean from the remainders of food and drink which can cause teeth and gum deseases. If this is the case, why should a person who just woke up and did not eat or drink anything should wash his teeth? Is there any reason for that? Of course, there could be only one reason, if a person does not wash his teeth before going to sleep, then he can wash his teeth after waking up. But in this case, the washing of teeth loses its meanning, because the food remains (bacterias and microbs) do their job with the teeth and gum during the night.
In case, that a person washes his teeth before going to bed, washing them again after waking up is meanningless, why to wash teeth which is clean? Some claim that some bacterias come out of stomach during the sleep and they reside on the teeth, that is why they wash their teeth before doing breakfast not to eat those bacterias again. I don't know how much true this claim is (bacterias coming out from stomach or lung), but even it is true, you can wash them away from your mouth simply by taking a water into your mouth, circulating it in the mouth (o'g'izni chayish) and then spitting it.

But, the main point in this issue is, if a person washes his teeth before the breakfast, not after it, the food remains stays in his mouth, and they (bacterias which in the food remains) attack and eat up his teeth and gums during the day, until he cleans his teeth late in the night. As for the person, who washes his teeth after the breakfast, his mouth stays clean up until he eats another food, thus his teeth and gums stay clean more than the other person.

Someone can say "Ok, the first person (who washed his teeth before the breakfast instead of doing it after the breakfast) may use chewing gum to clean his teeth". But (1) the chewing gum can not reach all parts if the mouth and teeth, and (2) it can not clean as good as toothpaste and (3) it does not have all necessary ingredients which toothpastes have.

Alternatively, you can think about washing the teeth in the night. You wash it before going to bed, not before eating your food in the evening. So the general idea behind washing the teeth is cleanning them of food remains. So it is done after eating the food, not before it (whether it is breakfast, lunch or dinner).

In this case, all you american grannys are doing right. Nothing to wonder.

I work with a bunch of dentists so I have some idea about this (but I am not a dentist!!) It is important to brush your teeth in the morning because overnight lots of bad stuff is going on in your mouth. Just think it has probably been 7+ hours since you last brushed your teeth and you never remove all the bacteria in your mouth when you brush or floss. Plus you probably breathe out of your mouth and this is bringing additional bacteria also. That is why your breath stinks I think. Brushing your teeth is not about making your teeth look nicer, it is more about removing bacteria. I don't see an reason why people would not brush their teeth after eating though. Maybe people do not like having bad breath. Also I think coffee is disgusting so I never put it in my mouth. ;)

I have no idea about people not washing their face before eating. It is the first thing I do when I wake up.

1. Lawyers are generally perceived as having no morals. Almost every politican was a lawyer at some point too.

2. People usually get their MBA after they have work experience to help them advance and make a better salary. It is assumed that people who want to advance in business will get their MBA.

3. I think being a doctor is prestigious anywhere. And it is very well paid. Also everyone always has to call you doctor everywhere you go.

I am not sure. I would also not confuse the issue being that they are female or asian american. It is still about the individuals. It is assumed whoever wins the democratic nomination will be president so I guess will get our answer soon.

I'm not really a dating expert. Maybe you should ask someone else on the forum. Utah is always a good start to find mormons though.

I don't usually talk about the elections very often. I generally know how most people in my office would vote. I have also found it is not the best topic if you want conversations to stay friendly.

True. Something like "How about them Nuggets?" is probably the safe way to go.

Question: Does America indeed run on Dunkin? If yes, why?

That question could get me a little stressed too. I would like to see the Nuggets winning a few more games. :D

I think the northeast runs on Dunkin donuts. And it shows. I don't think I have seen a dunkin donuts since I left the northeast.

I have a question. Based on what criteria you decide on which dental office to go? In Uzbekistan I used to choose based on price and little cared about quality of service. Here since my insurance would cover 100% how to choose among about 100 dental offices?

I personally would choose whichever is most conveniant. :D If you go for the appointment and you don't like them then you can switch to a new dentist. Also, you are lucky to have dental insurance.

Dear Melo,

Why did the Patriots lose the Super bowl?

I am looking for a short, original answer from you, not the boring ESPN (Sean Salisbury, ROn Jaworski and co.) kind of answer, please :)

I don't believe they were very good actually. They beat up on people in the beginning of the year and were winning close against bad teams at the end of the year. They also had an easy schedule.

During the game Tom Brady was bad and they were able to put pressure on him. That didn't happen much all year.

Hi ;),let me ask something about american people,tell me please why americans are doing a lot of stupid things in their daily life;
for exm:
most of them when they need take a leak during the trip by car, stop,go outside, take a leak right by the vehicle,
most of them (95% or more)are not washing their hand after bathroom,in the morning after got up:lol: & etc,
i saw those kind of situations not only in 1 place with the same people,unfor-ly in a lot of states with different americans,you know;
most of them they don't know how to cook something, but they like to talk about different kind of meals, seems like they know more about them, what did u said?ah?!
maybe my english not so clear, but i hope you can follow me.
thanks in advance.

I don't know. I generally thought people were more hygienic than that. Not sure what to tell you. What do people in Uzbekistan do in the same situation? Wait for hygenic bathroom facilities?

Lots of people don't know how to prepare any meals. I believe they are called men. I thought that was true for every culture.

I was looking through the US embassy in Uzbekistan webpage today because I was bored. I perosnally think the embassy is stupid and worthless and was proved right again today. The embassy in no way represents me for the record.

Apparently they want to send tv crews from Uzbekistan to make movies aout the US, Muslims in America and terrorism. Can we call it the "Borat" program? :lool:

I don't even need to comment much on USAID. Their major programs are Governing Justly and Democratically($5.4 million), Investing in People($4.3 million), and Economic Growth ($3.4 million). Thanks to that $5.4 million they helped Uzbekistan have a great election. Did anyone receive any of that $4.3 million from investing in people? Where do you stand in line for that? No wonder inflation is crazy for the US dollar. They are basically handing it out to Americans "working" for USAID in foreign countries to do nothing in particular.

Even beter they will open the base soon. Since they pay way to much already in Kyrgyzstan the chance to open a second base and pay the Uzbek government is a wonderful opportunity. Especially since they pay such little attention to Afghanistan anyways. Why not open bases in every country in the world.

I think it's understandable, considering most users here are not native speakers. But even americans confuse quiet-quite, they're-their, your-you're and especially, it's-its!

Question to you: Why do you think all the "reputable" news channels have become entertainment channels? Follow-up: Is this related to the fact that many people now get their news from fake/comedy news programs (Daily show, Colbert report)?

I was under the impression that nobody was a native speaker. :D The other terms you used sound alike, quiet and quite do not. ;) Their meanings are very different actually.

I think the answer is capitalism. Everyone needs to make money by getting viewers. If it is not interesting than nobody will watch. No viewers equals no advertising dollars. I personally can't stand adv
