Hi all!

I am arriving to NY on Sep 30. So, I am arranging a hostel to stay for few days. It will be my first time in NY; I have very little information about it. Could you suggest me where I should not stay. Is Harlem safe to stay? Any other places dangerous other than Bronx?

Thanks in advance.

New York probably has one of the lowest crime rates of any US city because there are police everywhere all the time. You probably need to be more concerned about the police more than anyone else actually. Just pretend you are in Uzbekistan.

ну если не выпендриваться то никто не тронет.
а такиго рода темных районов (чернушников) хвататет и в Бруклине, Квинсе и ЛонгАйленде.
Лучше в Манхаттане остановись. и сиди в гостинице.

depends where in Harlem you want to go... Spanish Harlem isn't scary, if you have a real uzbek look people will consider you as a latino, might even talk to you in spanish :) ... i would suggest you staying at a hostel called something Jazzy... i am assuming it's around 110th... don't know... never stayed at one... but many students stay around that area ... things get little scarier once you go above 125th street.... so brothah, be cautious... there will be a lot of penny people coming to you asking for quarters ... f''em off by saying u don't have cash...
if you're flying to JFK, just take A express train, it will stop west 125th street... or u could also sit on 1 train on local tracck... From LaGuardia, u've gotta take a bus to 125th... Harlem is beautiful,it's not as scary as people imagine... but rare things happen like someone shoots somebody else in front of your eyes, and nobody cares about it. btw, columbia is expanding its campus, there're some constructions going on Morningside...
Hope u have a safe trip and enjoy NYC

better stay in a hotel, cuz it's more safe.;)

if it's the hostel next to the Central Park and close to harlem, then run away from there. My groupmates wanted to stay there for one day, but then they decided to move out. A. it's dangerous. B. why the **** you wanna stay in the same room with ghettos?

Try to find a place at your friend's place. If there is no way, then go for it. But whenever you leave the hostel to see the City, take all your personal items with yourself.
