Futuristic new helmets will enable fighter jet pilots to see through their own aircraft, the Ministry of Defence have revealed.
The head gear being developed for the hi-tech F-35 Joint Strike Fighter(JSF) is currently being tested by MoD scientists at Boscombe Dow in Wiltshire.
An MoD spokesman said: "Unlike other jet aircraft the JSF, which is planned to replace the Harrier, does not have a traditional head-up display.


Instead the computerised symbology will be displayed directly on to the pilot's visors, providing the pilot with cues for flying, navigating and fighting the aircraft.
"It even will superimpose infra-red imagery on to the visor to allow the pilot to look through the cockpit floor at night and see the world below - like something out of Terminator.
"This is absolutely the cutting edge of technology. No other helmet will be able to do this."
The head gear, currently at prototype stage, is being developed by Vision Systems International and Helmet Integrated Systems Limited.

Blair accused of 'gold-digging'

Tony Blair has been accused of "gold-digging" and "money-sucking" after he reportedly charged Ј240,000 for giving a speech in China.

The Guangzhou Daily (hitoy gazetasi bo'lsa kerak) reported that Mr Blair had received $500,000 - about Ј240,000 - before tax for the speech. After tax, the fee was estimated to be Ј156,000.

The Guangzhou Daily said: "Like many world-renowned statesmen, Tony Blair, who only recently left his throne as British prime minister on 27 June this year, has been rushing around the world making commercial speeches after leaving office.

"This time, Blair's money-sucking tentacles have extended into China."

Illegal immigrants employed as security guards


LONDON (Reuters) - The government acknowledged on Sunday that some illegal immigrants had been employed as security guards, but said checks were underway to revoke their licenses and deport them.

Up to 5,000 illegal immigrants have been able to secure security jobs in the UK, including guarding the prime minister's car, the Sunday Mirror reported.

Six illegal immigrants were found to be working for the Metropolitan Police, while others were employed at airports, ports and government buildings, the paper added.

The Home Office said that since 2004 it has been the job of the Security Industry Authority (SIA) to regulate the industry.

Russia honours former British spy Blake at 85

Blake, reviled in Britain as a traitor to crown and country, told Reuters he had lived a "full and happy life". He turned 85 on Sunday.

He was a British secret agent from 1944 until 1961, when he was jailed for 42 years after pleading guilty to spying for the Soviet Union. He escaped from prison in London in 1966 and has lived in Moscow since.

Russia's SVR foreign intelligence service, successor to the mighty First Chief Directorate of the Soviet KGB secret police, feted Blake at a special gala at its headquarters on Monday evening, the SVR said.

SVR director Mikhail Fradkov decorated Blake with the Friendship Order and read out telegrams from Russia's leadership, Interfax news agency quoted SVR spokesman Sergei Ivanov as saying.

"The importance of the information supplied by Blake can hardly be overestimated," Ivanov said.

In 1953 Blake tipped off the Soviet intelligence of plans by British and U.S. secret services to build a tunnel into the Soviet-occupied zone of Berlin to tap into landline communication of the Soviet Army headquarters.

The Soviets unearthed the tunnel in 1956 after it had been in operation for almost a year. But only after Blake's arrest in 1961 did Western intelligence officials realise Moscow had used its knowledge of the tunnel to misinform them.

"It is namely thanks to Blake that the Soviet Union avoided very serious military and political damage which the United States and Great Britain could have inflicted on it, should they have succeeded in such a large-scale operation now widely known as 'The Berlin Tunnel'," SVR's Ivanov said.

"I never realised that," Blake told Reuters by telephone, commenting on the SVR's praise. "But it's very difficult to see things like that (the Berlin tunnel) in the general picture."

Asked whether attitude to him in present-day capitalist Russia run by former KGB spy Vladimir Putin was any different than in Soviet times, he said: "Oh no, no, not in the least."

Relations between Britain and Russia have come under strain after Moscow refused a request to extradite the chief suspect in the killing of former Russian agent Alexander Litvinenko in London a year ago.

Blake had admitted handing the Soviet Union hundreds of names of British agents. He left three children behind in Britain when he escaped from jail more than four decades ago and started a new family in Moscow.

"I feel very lucky to have lived to my age and to be in good health, and to have had a very interesting and very full and, in the end, a happy life," he told Reuters.

Queen to honour ex-Soviet spy who defected to Britain

A former Soviet Spy who defected to Britain, will be honoured by the Queen today at Buckingham Palace.

One-time KGB colonel Oleg Gordievsky will be made a Companion of the Most Distinguished Order of St Michael and St George (CMG) - the same accolade held by fictional superspy James Bond.

The former double-agent, who became the highest ranking Soviet spy ever to defect to the West, is being recognised for services to UK security.

His award was announced in June as tensions between Russia and the UK returned to their highest since the Soviet era, in the wake of the murder of former security agent Alexander Litvinenko in London and President Vladimir Putin's threat to target Europe with nuclear missiles.

Gordievsky was MI5's greatest asset between 1982 and 1985, when he passed information to British security while serving as KGB resident and bureau chief in London, running Soviet intelligence-gathering and espionage in the UK.

His cover was blown - possibly by US double agent Aldrich Ames - and he was called back to Moscow and kept under close surveillance, but managed to escape to the West in an audacious MI6 plot.

He gave British security services an unprecedented amount of information about Soviet agents operating in the UK, 25 of whom were expelled soon after he fled Russia.

His defection was hailed by then Foreign Secretary Sir Geoffrey Howe as 'a very substantial coup for our security forces'.

Gordievsky was first recruited as a double-agent by MI6 in the 1960s, when he became disillusioned with his work with the KGB, the political situation in his homeland and the Soviet invasion of Czechoslovakia.

He has written a number of books about the operations of the KGB and has made frequent appearances on TV, including on the panel of the Channel 4 gameshow Wanted in 1996.

The CMG is used to honour individuals who have rendered important non-military services in relation to Commonwealth or foreign nations.

James Bond was made a CMG in Ian Fleming's novel From Russia With Love.

Actress Sylvia Syms will also be honoured, receiving an OBE.

Syms, now 73, has appeared in numerous films, notably in the 1950s and 1960s, including English civil war story The Moonraker (1958), The Punch and Judy Man (1962) and The Tamarind Seed (1974).

She recently played the Queen Mother in Stephen Frears' hit movie The Queen. She has also starred as Margaret Thatcher more than once on stage and TV.

Dramatist Stephen Poliakoff will receive his CBE. The writer crafted his first play, Granny, at school in 1969, and the performance was reviewed by The Times.

He became writer-in-residence at the National Theatre, but made his break into television in 1977 with Stronger Than The Sun, followed by Caught on a Train, which earned him his first Bafta.

His TV drama Gideon's Daughter won Golden Globes for actors Bill Nighy and Emily Blunt.

Other credits include Close My Eyes in 1991, The Lost Prince and Perfect Strangers.

A victims' rights campaigner who was inspired to help others after her daughter was murdered is to receive an MBE.

Sandra Sullivan, 61, from Kingston upon Thames, Surrey, set up Justice for Victims after her psychologist daughter Katie was stabbed to death by a schizophrenic in 1992.

She began campaigning after feeling her family's needs were ignored by the criminal justice system.

A 78-year-old karate expert from Cwmbran, south Wales, Mitsusuke Harada will be made an MBE.

The master of martial arts, who was fundamental in pioneering karate in the UK, still actively teaches and trains.

Dame Mary Perkins, co-founder of Specsavers, will be made a Dame Commander for services to business and to the community in Guernsey.

Blackwater killed 14 Iraqis without cause: FBI report :evil:

WASHINGTON (AFP) - FBI investigators have found that Blackwater guards shot 14 people with no justification in the controversial September 16 incident in Baghdad, the New York Times reported Wednesday.

Seventeen people were killed when Blackwater private security guards opened fire in a crowded Baghdad neighborhood as they protected a State Department convoy. Blackwater said the guards came under attack.

At least 14 of the shootings broke rules for private security guards in Iraq regarding the use of deadly force, the Times reported, citing unnamed civilian and military officials briefed on the case.

Up to five Blackwater guards fired weapons during the incident, including one guard described as "turret gunner No. 3" who was responsible for several deaths, the report said.

Federal Bureau of Investigation agents also found no evidence that the convoy was attacked by Iraqis, as Blackwater claims.

"I wouldn't call it a massacre," an unnamed government official told the Times. "But to say it was unwarranted is an understatement."

The Blackwater guards work for the US State Department and fall outside US military jurisdiction. In 2004 then US administrator for Iraq, Paul Bremer, approved a law granting immunity to private security firms operating in the country.

The Pentagon -- which has opened a separate investigation into the killings -- said in late October it will coordinate the movements of security firms in Iraq.

The Iraqi government has called for Blackwater to be barred from operating in the country.

The State Department employs has more than 2,500 security contractors in Iraq to protect diplomats and guard its facilities.

Germany says no to more WWII reparations

JERUSALEM - Israeli Holocaust survivors asked Germany's finance minister Thursday to improve a reparations arrangement set up a half-century ago, but he said no additional money would be paid.

Survivors reasoned the original 1952 accord with Israel did not account for their unexpected longevity or apply to tens of thousands of Holocaust victims who came to Israel following the Soviet Union's collapse.

LONDON (Reuters) - The success of the James Bond movies has given the British Secret Intelligence Service a recruitment headache -- too many cranks want to join MI6.
"I think it gives people a false impression of what working for the organisation is actually like," the head of MI6 recruitment -- named only as "Mark" -- told BBC Radio One's Newsbeat programme on Monday.

"So it does tend to turn up quite a lot of thrill seekers and fantasists and we're really not interested in them".

As well as dismissing the notion that spying was a never-ending life of fast cars, fast women and shaken not stirred Martini cocktails, "Mark" was keen to demolish another myth surrounding MI6.

"We don't have a licence to kill -- we don't carry Berettas -- that's simply not true."

Murder after talk show sparks debate about trash TV in Spain


Madrid - When Svetlana, a 30-year-old Russian woman living in Spain, accepted to appear on a popular television talk show, she only knew that a surprise was awaiting her on the programme. The surprise turned out to be her former boyfriend, whose marriage proposal she rejected live in front of all of Spain.

Five days later, Ricardo stabbed Svetlana to death, apparently to take revenge for the public humiliation he felt she had inflicted on him.

The 30-year-old Spaniard was due to serve a prison sentence for violent treatment of Svetlana and had been ordered to stay away from her, something that the programme's preparatory checks on its guests had not detected.

Iran builds new longer-range missile

TEHRAN (AFP) - Iran announced on Tuesday that it has built a new missile with a range sufficient to put Israel and US bases in the Middle East within easy reach, amid rising tensions over Tehran's contested nuclear drive.

Defence Minister Mostafa Mohammad Najjar said the new "Ashura" missile had a range of 2,000 kilometres (1,240 miles) -- the farthest in Iran's arsenal, state media reported.

"The construction of the Ashura missile with a range of 2,000 kilometres is one of the accomplishments of the ministry of defence," Iranian news agencies quoted Najjar as saying.

"The missiles are being made in line with Iran's deterrent and defence doctrine," he added.

However, there has been considerable confusion in recent months about the capacities of Iran's longer-range missiles, seen by experts as one of its chief military assets.

At its main military parade in September, Iran unveiled the Ghadr-1 (Power), which was said to have a range of 1,800 kilometres (1,100 miles).

The country's best-known longer-range missile, the Shahab-3, has been said by officials in the past to have a range of 2,000 kilometres. Yet at the military parade it was said to have only a 1,300-kilometre (800-mile) range.

Some Western military experts claimed that the Ghadr-1 was no more than a Shahab-3 under a different name. It has the "baby bottle" style nose for extra aerodynamic efficiency seen on versions of the Shahab-3.

TEHRAN (AFP) - Iran announced on Tuesday that it has built a new missile with a range sufficient to put Israel and US bases in the Middle East within easy reach, amid rising tensions over Tehran's contested nuclear drive.

Defence Minister Mostafa Mohammad Najjar said the new "Ashura" missile had a range of 2,000 kilometres (1,240 miles) -- the farthest in Iran's arsenal, state media reported.

"The construction of the Ashura missile with a range of 2,000 kilometres is one of the accomplishments of the ministry of defence," Iranian news agencies quoted Najjar as saying.

"The missiles are being made in line with Iran's deterrent and defence doctrine," he added.

However, there has been considerable confusion in recent months about the capacities of Iran's longer-range missiles, seen by experts as one of its chief military assets.

At its main military parade in September, Iran unveiled the Ghadr-1 (Power), which was said to have a range of 1,800 kilometres (1,100 miles).

The country's best-known longer-range missile, the Shahab-3, has been said by officials in the past to have a range of 2,000 kilometres. Yet at the military parade it was said to have only a 1,300-kilometre (800-mile) range.

Some Western military experts claimed that the Ghadr-1 was no more than a Shahab-3 under a different name. It has the "baby bottle" style nose for extra aerodynamic efficiency seen on versions of the Shahab-3.

US military deaths in Iraq at 3,896

As of Friday, Dec. 21, 2007, at least 3,896 members of the U.S. military have died since the beginning of the Iraq war in March 2003, according to an Associated Press count. The figure includes eight military civilians. At least 3,171 died as a result of hostile action, according to the military's numbers.


The AP count is two higher than the Defense Department's tally, last updated Friday at 10 a.m. EST.

The British military has reported 174 deaths; Italy, 33; Ukraine, 18; Poland, 21; Bulgaria, 13; Spain, 11; Denmark, seven; El Salvador, five; Slovakia, four; Latvia, three; Estonia, Netherlands, Thailand, Romania, two each; and Australia, Hungary, Kazakhstan, South Korea, one death each.


The latest identifications reported by the military:

• Army 1st Lt. Jeremy E. Ray, 26, of Houston, died Thursday in Kanaan of wounds suffered from an explosive; was assigned to the 1st Squadron, 3rd Armored Cavalry Regiment, Fort Hood, Texas.

British police learn German to talk to dogs: reports

LONDON (AFP) - British police dog handlers are learning to give orders to their animals in German after bosses decided to import Alsatians because of a shortage of suitable animals here, media reports said Friday.

A trial of the German dogs by Derbyshire Police in east central England has been deemed a success, prompting 16 other forces to recruit the canines at 2,000 pounds (2,600 euros, 3,900 dollars) each.

But the imports cannot understand commands in English, the Daily Telegraph said. "If you say, 'let go' in English, they just look at you like you are crazy," one dog handler told the newspaper.

Handlers have had to learn a series of orders in German, including "sitz" (sit), "platz" (down), "aus" (let go), "holen" (fetch) and "bissen" (bite).

A Derbyshire Police spokeswoman told the Press Association news agency said they were attempting to get the dogs to respond to English.

"We are repeating the German commands in English so they are becoming bilingual," she added.

Police have opted for German Alsatians as they are deemed to be more efficient and obedient than those bred in Britain because of a strict breeding regime.

Узбекистан: В одном из кишлаков Бухарской области произошла массовая драка

Как сообщает внештатный корреспондент ИА «Фергана.Ру в Республике Узбекистан, ссылающийся на рассказы местных жителей, 26 января 2008 года в кишлаке Лабирут Гиждуванского района Бухарской области произошла массовая драка.

Примерно после 17 часов дня в кишлак Лабирут прибыла группа водителей междугородных автобусов, находящихся в состоянии алкогольного и наркотического опьянения, в количестве от тридцати до сорока человек. Водители начали методично избивать жителей кишлака.

В руках у нападавших, по словам жителей гиждуванского кишлака, были палки и топоры. «Они избивали всех, кто попадался на их пути», - рассказывает местный житель. Несколько жителей кишлака Лабирут получили телесные увечья. Сельчане, в свою очередь, тоже избили кое-кого из нападавших. В настоящее время в Гиждуванской районной больнице находятся трое пострадавших из числа водителей.

Около двадцати человек арестовано сотрудниками правоохранительных органов. Возбуждено уголовное дело. Ведется следствие.

28 января состоялась встреча представителей хокимиата (администрации) Гиждуванского района Бухарской области Узбекистана с правоохранительными органами, старейшинами и молодежью кишлака Лабирут. Причиной данной встречи послужил инцидент между местным населением и водителями этого района. На встрече местное население потребовало справедливого возмездия в отношении тех, кто нападал.

Выяснилось, что причиной нападения стал конфликт, произошедший 25 января между помощником водителя автобуса, следующего по рейсу Гиждуван-Бухара-Гиждуван и пассажирами. Двое пассажиров из кишлака Лабируд заплатили меньше, чем запросил помощник водителя автобуса.

После работы помощник водителя, отдавая малую дневную выручку своему руководителю, оправдался тем, что жители кишлака Лабируд платят за проезд от центра Гиждувана до Лабируд 300 сумов (Лабируд находится примерно в 12 километрах от центра Гиждувана). Тогда руководитель автобусной фирмы в компании своих друзей 26 января вечером поехал в этот кишлак и стал избивать тех, кто попадался ему навстречу.

Следует отметить, что Гиждуванский район Бухарской области часто становится центром подобного рода криминальных инцидентов. Несколько месяцев тому назад жители махалли Сармижон напали на начальника районного УВД.

Illegal cleaner 'worked for Immigration for 3 years'

FIVE Nigerians who were arrested as illegal immigrants when they arrived to work as cleaners at the immigration directorate had already worked in other parts of the service, their employer said.

The men, who were apparently detained when they turned up at a building responsible for deporting illegal immigrants, had worked in other premises belonging to the Immigration and Nationality Directorate (IND).

The allegations threaten to cause further embarrassment to the Government, which has been on the defensive over its record on removing illegal immigrants and the fiasco over foreign prisoners who were not considered for deportation.

Each cleaner had worked in parts of the directorate on a number of occasions, one for about three years, according to a statement from Techclean, the contract cleaning company that employed them, which was read on Channel 4 news last night. The company said that it had notified the Home Office ten days before the five Nigerians turned up for work at Beckett House, near London Bridge, on Wednesday night, and had given the Home Office the names of the cleaners.

The company, according to the programme, said that the men had been paid through bank accounts, with normal deductions for tax and national insurance.

Four of the men had undergone checks by the company on their passports, national insurance cards and visas. One man, it was said, had a letter from the Immigration Service confirming that he was allowed to work in Britain, suggesting that forged documents may have been involved.

The Government has admitted that up to three million national insurance numbers are issued to foreigners with few checks carried out.

The Home Office promised last night that it would investigate the latest allegations “fully and as quickly as possible”.

A statement from Techclean, which is based in Surrey, said: “We understood last night that people had turned up for work for the first time and were stopped, their names checked and found not to be cleared, and the authorities were, therefore, called in and they were arrested.”

The statement failed to clarify the possibility that, instead of being detained as they arrived for work, the Nigerians may have been working in Beckett House.

Within an hour of the allegations being made on Thursday night, John Reid, the Home Secretary, appeared on television, insisting that the men’s discovery showed that Home Office checks worked.

But last night’s allegations suggest that the checks had failed in other parts of the directorate.

A Home Office spokesman added: “The Home Secretary made it clear last night that the fact that the system had worked successfully in this way was a cause for praise for the alertness of the security guard.

“He also made it absolutely clear that no system was

100 per cent foolproof and that there may have been occasions in the past where people had got through the system.”

Dominic Grieve, the Shadow Attorney-General, said: “The latest allegations are very worrying as they suggest breaches of security at the Home Office. It also calls into question what the Home Office had to say when this matter was first revealed.”

The Home Office failed yesterday to respond to questions about measures that it had taken to ensure that sub-contractors checked the credentials of their staff.

Illegal immigrant worked at Parliament

An illegal immigrant who disappeared for four years was caught working as a cleaner inside the Houses of Parliament.

Brazilian Elaine Chaves Aparecida, 31, was seized as she tried to get into the Palace of Westminster access using someone else's security pass.

The latest security blunder to hit the Government was only revealed when an insider leaked the contents of a confidential memo to Home Office minister Liam Byrne.

The memo admitted Ms Aparecida worked at the Houses of Parliament from December 3 as an employee of cleaning contractor Emprise Services.

The document also advised ministers to keep quiet about the incident unless asked by the media "given recent coverage of security guards employed illegally at Government offices".

Home Secretary Jacqui Smith was forced to admit that more than 11,000 illegal workers may have been cleared to get jobs as security guards two months ago.

Ms Aparecida, who fled from immigration officials at Heathrow Airport in 2004, is believed to have returned to Brazil voluntarily last week.

"The article alleged (Smith) had declared in an interview that Nazi dictator Adolf Hitler was a good person," Smith's lawyer Rachel Atkins told the court.

"It wholly misrepresents (his) actual words."

She said Smith, also a Grammy-winning rapper who was not in court, actually thought Hitler was "vile and heinous"...............

Sex-with-corpse man jailed for model's murder

LONDON (Reuters) - A chef was jailed for life on Friday for the "repulsive" murder of aspiring model Sally Anne Bowman, as detectives voiced fears he may have killed before.
Mark Dixie, 37, who had claimed he had had sex with the 18-year-old's corpse but had not killed her, was told he would not be eligible for parole for 34 years.

"What you did was so awful, so repulsive, I will not repeat it here", Old Bailey judge Gerald Gordon told Dixie. "You have shown not the slightest remorse for what you did -- quite the opposite."

The sentence, the judge said, had to reflect the public's revulsion over his heinous crime.

There were cheers in court when he was convicted earlier on Friday and members of the victim's family shouted abuse as he was led away to the cells.

Dixie responded to the taunts by turning and shaking his fist to them and encouraging them to fight him.

Bowman's mother, Linda, had earlier revealed her family's shock at the brutal killing in Croydon in September 2005.

Ipswich killer jailed for full life term

LONDON (Reuters) - Convicted killer Steve Wright was told by a judge on Friday that he will spend the rest of his life behind bars for his six-week "targeted campaign of murder" against five prostitutes.

Wright, 49, killed the five drug-addicted women around the city of Ipswich in late 2006.

On Friday he was sentenced to a whole life term without the prospect of parole, meaning he will never be released.

The judge, Mr Justice Gross, said his crimes had caused public revulsion. "It is right you should spend your whole life in prison," he told Ipswich Crown Court. "This was a targeted campaign of murder."

Drugs and prostitution had exposed them to risk but neither, he added, had killed them.

"You did -- you are responsible for their deaths," he said. "You killed them, stripped them and left them in rural or semi-rural locations.

"Why you did it may never be known but as the jury have concluded, disbelieving your denials, murder them you did."

He added: "As a result, there is only one sentence - that of life imprisonment."

Media reports said police are now set to question Wright over the unsolved murder of estate agent Suzy Lamplugh, who was killed more than 20 years ago.

Lamplugh was 25 when she met Wright while they were both working on the QE2 cruise ship. She went missing in July 1986 after leaving her office in Fulham, west London to meet a mysterious "Mr Kipper". She was declared dead in 1994.

Wright's ex-wife Diane Cole, 53, who also worked on the QE2, told the Daily Mirror she had checked her diary and noticed Wright had had shore leave at that time.

She said Wright also used the word "kipper" as slang for face. Police have yet to comment.

After Wright's conviction on Thursday, the families of two of the dead women called for the return of the death penalty. Wright's father told newspapers he had disowned his son and wanted him to die for his crimes.

Wright, labelled the "Suffolk Strangler" by the media, had murdered the five women while his 63-year-old partner Pamela was working night shifts. Their bodies were found in the space of just 10 days around the city, two of them arranged in a cruciform pose with arms outstretched.

After two days of deliberations, the jury of nine men and three women found Wright guilty of murdering Gemma Adams, 25, Tania Nicol, 19, Anneli Alderton, 24, Paula Clennell, 24, and Annette Nicholls, 29.

The court had heard that in the three months before his December 19, 2006 arrest, Wright, the son of an RAF policeman, had sex with a dozen prostitutes, including four of those he killed.

His DNA was found on the bodies of three of the victims while bloodstains from two of the women were found on his jacket at his home.

Detective Chief Superintendent Stewart Gull of Suffolk Police said the "appalling crimes left a community, a county and a nation in a state of profound shock".

Virgin test flies biofuel-powered jumbo jet

A Virgin Boeing 747 jumbo jet, carrying biofuels mixed with kerosene, traditional jet fuel, made the short trip between London and Amsterdam with no passengers on board.

Virgin Atlantic chief Richard Branson described the flight as "history in the making".

The plane used a biofuel blend of babassu oil -- extracted from nuts of the babassu tree -- and coconut oil. Both products are more commonly found in cosmetics like lip balm and shaving cream.

World views US 'more positively' BUT NOT IN ISRAIL
Attitudes to the United States are improving, an opinion poll carried out for the BBC World Service suggests.

The average percentage of people saying that the US has a positive influence has risen to 35% from 31% a year ago, according to the survey.

Those saying the US has a negative influence fell five percentage points to 47%.

The poll, part of a regular survey of world opinion, interviewed more than 17,000 people in 34 countries.

The survey period was the three months up to the end of January 2008.

However, the poll finds that views of US influence in the world are still mainly negative, though they improved in 11 out of the 23 countries also polled a year ago.

Perceptions of the US worsened in three - Canada, Lebanon and Egypt.

The World Service poll has been canvassing opinions about the influence of countries since 2005.

Of the 17 countries surveyed every year since 2005, positive views of the US have recovered for the first time this year to 32% after showing a steady decline over the previous three years.

Reacting to the poll results, senior US state department official Kurt Volker acknowledged perceptions had been negative in recent years, but said 2003 and 2004 had been an "anomaly" because of the Iraq war.

"I would say public opinion is a lagging indicator of what we are doing, working together with European governments and other elites," he said in a BBC interview.

"Everyone wants to be loved," he said.

But he added: "We are a superpower. We have tremendous responsibility, a large economy, large diplomatic reach and military reach, so naturally the world looks at the US with much greater attention than any other country in the world."

Most negative

Of other countries rated, Iran and Israel are viewed most negatively.

Negative views of Iran's influence remained at 54%. But Israel's negative rating went down from 57% to 52%.

Pakistan was the third most poorly rated country.

Germany, included in the ratings for the first time, is viewed most positively, with a 56% positive score to 18% negative.

Japan comes in a close second, with 56% positive to 21% negative. But a majority of those surveyed in neighbouring China and South Korea expressed negative views of Japan.

Russia showed the greatest improvement, with positive views rising on average among the countries surveyed from 29% to 37%.



The survey was carried out by the international polling firm GlobeScan with the Program on International Policy Attitudes (PIPA) at the University of Maryland.

PIPA director Steven Kull said the improved rating of the United States could be linked to the forthcoming presidential election.

"It may be that as the US approaches a new presidential election, views of the US are being mitigated by hope that a new administration will move away from the foreign policies that have been so unpopular in the world," he said.

People were asked to rate Brazil, Britain, China, France, Germany, India, Iran, Israel, Japan, North Korea, Pakistan, Russia, the US and the European Union as having positive or negative influence
