Ok,I will start with my critical analysis on a book by William Faulkner "A Rose for Emily"

Summary

This story is narrated through a third person's point of view. The story is told from the townspeople. The story starts off with Ms. Emily's funeral. It states that "the men through a sort of respectful affection for a fallen monument, the women mostly out of curiosity to see the inside of her house, which no one save an old man-servant--a combined gardener and cook--had seen in at least ten years." As we can see, Ms. Emily was sort of like a mystery to citizens of the town. The author continuously uses symbolism in the story. When the deputation came to her house for her taxes, Faulkner describes how the house and Ms. Emily looks. "only Miss Emily's house was left, lifting its stubborn and coquettish decay above the cotton wagons and the gasoline pumps-an eyesore among eyesores", this statement explains how the house gives off such a depressing mood. "Her skeleton was small and spare;", this line shows us how her appearance showcases death also.

When Ms. Emily was younger, her deceased father used to force away all the young men that was in love with her. The summer after her father death, she fell in love with a Yankee by the name of Homer Barron. Everyone in the town was whispering about their relationship and wondering if they were married. After a while they stop seeing Homer and decided that they got married. The townspeople then proceeds by saying that Ms. Emily then died a while after. They didn't know she was sick.

After they buried her, they knew that there was one room that wasn't opened. So after they decently buried her they went to see upon the room. When they opened the room they was greeted by great amounts of dust. They also explain that the "room decked and furnished as for a bridal: upon the valance curtains of faded rose color, upon the rose-shaded lights, upon the dressing table, upon the delicate array of crystal and the man's toilet things backed with tarnished silver, silver so tarnished that the monogram was obscured." They also saw a man's collar, tie, suit, shoes, and discarded socks. "Then shockingly, laying right there in the bed was the man. For a long while we just stood there, looking down at the profound and fleshless grin. The body had apparently once lain in the attitude of an embrace. What was left of him, rotted beneath what was left of the nightshirt, had become inextricable from the bed in which he lay; and upon him and upon the pillow beside him lay that even coating of the patient and biding dust. Then we noticed that in the second pillow was the indentation of a head. One of us lifted something from it, and leaning forward, that faint and invisible dust dry and acrid in the nostrils, we saw a long strand of iron-gray hair."

Some of my own thoughts on this novel:

Emily Grierson is an interesting figure to look at and analyze. She definitely had courage, strength and backbone in her but was punished and had lived for a long time under the influence of her tyrannical father. He was extremely controlling of her and her life, he has controlled every aspect of her life and has made sure that she was left without suitors and was always by his side. Grierson family has been held and acted as if they were too high for others, in other words acted as if everyone else was dust and they (Griersons) were the most important matter on the face of the earth. Emily Grierson has been raised in the old South traditions so she was raised as “female” under male dominance. In the story itself there is an interesting quote that describes the relationship of Emily with her father, “We had long thought of them as a tableau, Miss Emily a slender figure in white in the background, her father a spraddled silhouette in the foreground, his back to her and clutching a horsewhip, the two of them framed by the back-flung front door”, to picture this quote from an outsiders view is very simple, she was under his tyranny and obeyed his every word and rule. The reader might wonder as to why she has kept the body of her father for three days, does it rely on the old saying “What we hate the most is what we are afraid to lose”? The significance of “three days” can be viewed in different aspect, according to Bible three days is the time since Jesus’ crucifixion and resurrection and the number is present in the Christian Trinity (also referred to as Holy Trinity: God, Son and the Holy Spirit). However it is easy to see that Emily had courage and backbone left in her even though her father tried to “break” her because after his death she wasn’t afraid to decline/reject when the city officials have called on her (visited her) to resolve the taxing issue. She had enough courage to state her opinion and stick to it and ask her guests to leave. Not many women would have had the courage to do that in post Civil War South. Only one other lady comes to mind when I think of courage in Southern ladies: it was Scarlett O’Hara from Margaret Mitchells book “Gone with the Wind”. She like Emily Grierson had strength, courage and backbone to do what she had to do in order to survive and get necessities for her family.
Since Emily’s father has died and she had no immediate family close to her Colonel Sartoris have agreed to omit her taxes. It was an act of pity towards her because she was all alone, with no man by her side to take care of her. Yet when the city government has changed and city officials have tried to make Emily pay taxes she either returned the postage or never claimed the mail at the postal office. Her direct words towards those men were, "I have no taxes in Jefferson. Colonel Sartoris explained it to me. Perhaps one of you can gain access to the city records and satisfy yourselves.", was she acting on her pride or stubbornness? Or was it yet again an act of rebellion towards male domination?
Something that stands out in the story is that Emily has locked the uppers floors of her house and moved into her basement. Also the awful smell around her house should have given some clues as to why Homer has disappeared. For Emily to cling to Homers body was an act of insanity and love and desperate need for male figure in her life. Only after her death the people in Jefferson town have learned the horrible truth. In her bedroom upstairs lay the remaining of a man. Yet all of his belongings lay in the room as if they were taken off and folded neatly moments ago. Has Emily loved him so much that she decided to kill him and keep him to herself? If so it is understandable as to why they have found a long silver hair on the pillow next to the dead body. The story repeats itself because earlier when her father died she wouldn’t give up his body for burial. Was there something different attached to it than love?

How do you feel about stem-cell research?do you consider it to be unethical?or you think since its just a blastocyst (which might have developed into embryo soon enough) it shouldn't matter?

That debate has centered on the sources for human embryonic stem cells – especially those that have the potential to be patient-specific. For research purposes, scientists have turned to fertility clinics where patients either have donated their nascent embryos to research or no longer need them to start a family. But the process of extracting the stem cells destroys these soon-to-be embryos, technically called blastocysts. The destruction is abhorrent to those who hold that human life begins at conception
Embryonic stem cells are the subject of intense medical interest because of their ability to develop into any of the major cell types in the human body. Over the long term, these stem cells could become the foundation for therapies for a range of diseases, scientists say. This week's announcement suggests it will be possible for scientists to study these cells without the ethical and political difficulties of harvesting them from unused human embryos.

Researchers have transformed ordinary human skin cells into batches of cells that look and act like embryonic stem cells -- but without using cloning technology and without making embryos.

"Hate how much I Love You"

That's much I love you
That's how much I need you
And I can’t stand ya
Most everything you do
make me wanna smile
Can I not like you for awhile

but you won’t let me
You upset me girl
and then you kiss my lips
All of a sudden I forget
that I was upset
Can’t remember what you did
But I hate it

You know exactly what to do
So that I can’t stay mad at you
For too long, that’s wrong

But, I hate it
You know exactly how to touch
So that I don’t wanna fuss and fight no more
Said I despise that I adore you

And I hate how much I love you boy
I can’t stand how much I need you
And I hate how much I love you boy
But I just can’t let you go
And I hate that I love you so..

And you completely know the power that you have
The only one that makes me laugh

Said and it’s not fair how you take advantage of the fact that I
Love you beyond a reason why
And it just ain’t right

And I hate how much I love you girl
I can’t stand how much I need you
And I hate how much I love you girl
But I just can’t let you go
And I hate that I love you so

One of these days maybe your magic won’t affect me
And your kiss won’t make me weak
But no one in this world knows me the way you know me
So you’ll probably always have a spell on me..

That's much I love you
I need you

And I hate that I love you sooo...

And I hate how much I love you boy
I can’t stand how much I need you
And I hate how much I love you boy
But I just can’t let you go
And I hate that I love you so

And I hate that I love you so.. so..

Pour me some wine, join me tonight
Surround me with your happy faces
Share some fun stories, stay up all night
Surround me with your friendly faces
Then look at me, when I'm not aware
Then you'll see, I cannot do without you
I'll be right there, if you ask me to
If you're feeling sad, I'll stay with you
And if you're scared, I'll hold your hand
Like I know you'd do for me too, like I know
You'd do for me too

Pour me some wine, join me tonight
Life is so good when I'm with you
I needed the laughs, I needed you tonight

So look at me, when I'm not aware
Then you'll see, I cannot do without you
I'll be right there, if you ask me to
If you're feeling sad, I'll stay with you
And if you're scared, I'll hold your hand
Like I know you'd do for me too.
I'll be right there, if you ask me to
If you're feeling sad, I'll stay with you
And if you're scared, I'll hold your hand

Nicole Scherzinger "I'll be your Love"

I'll be your love
I'll never make you feel, feel alone
If yesterday blindfolds your eyes
I'll bring you tomorrow

There's a time
You feel like you're lost
Feel the night will never end
Through the daybreak
It's hard to hold on
But there is tomorrow
Brings you to your senses
As the sun will make it's way

You'll make it there
To the place where reality and dreams
And love will be together
I'll keep the light from fading
If the clouds blind your way
And the wind sways your faith

I'll be your love, I'll be your light
I'll never make you feel, feel alone
If yesterday blindfolds your eyes
I'll bring you tomorrow
Let me see you smile

Don't you cry
Over the past
Some days might be gray

And dreary
Not easy to leave
To leave it behind
'Til the rain stops in silence
I'll be there to hold your heart

I'll be with you
'Til you find the reason for love
We take it for granted
We'll keep the time from fading
''cause the world is here to stay
Your hope is deeper than pain

I'll be your love, I'll be your light
I'll never make you feel, feel alone
If yesterday blindfolds your eyes
I'll bring you tomorrow

If you would believe
Believe in the world
A vision of love
And the strength inside your heart
You'll find a way

I'll be your love, I'll be your light
I'll never make you feel, feel alone
If yesterday blindfolds your eyes
I'll bring you tomorrow
I'll be your love, I'll be your light
I'll never make you feel, feel alone...

On: Have you ever lost a friend? You know it could have been avoided and yet you couldn't help it...Now after all you realize that its all too confusing and you want to set it right but your pride won't let you,and that how you deal with it,through your pride.People are people, they are not perfect, some and egoistic, others are too damn proud...but in either way its not fixable at the end...Pride is not something to be followed, under no circumstances,it never leads you in the right direction, you realize it but still you are trapped in your pride and will never make a move.

Does anyone else find this dieting stuff as nonsense?
My friend showed me this article (who knew there was a diet called "Eat right for your blood type"? ),and I looked up my blood type...damn,turns out im gaining weight from anything :lool:,except air maybe...
btw one thing they said that was true is that I can't stand to eat meat...I mean I do eat it sometimes, but not a lot,and not often...Im more of a veggies person.

Blood Type A

People with Blood Type A evolved from the hunter/meat-eater to the agrarian, and were the farmers and grain gatherers. This blood type evolved between 25,000 and 15,000 bC. They have fragile digestive systems. These people cannot tolerate animal protein well, and should be the proverbial, classic "vegetarian" of the human species. They also are usually lactose intolerant, as well. Persons with Blood Type A should avoid animal protein and dairy products, and would do well with whole grains, legumes, fruits and vegetables. Tofu and Hawaiian Spirulina should become the Blood Type A person's best friends, as these foods contains high-quality vegetable protein! Persons with Blood Type A do not produce enough hydrochloric acid in their stomachs, and that is why they have a difficult time digesting animal protein well. This also gives them a predisposition toward getting stomach cancer, and should never eat smoked or cured meats due to the sodium nitrites in them. Animal protein and dairy products tend to rot and ferment in their digestive tracts, and the toxic bacteria backs up into their tissues and muscles, thereby causing digestive distress. A lack of sufficient hydrochloric acid in their stomachs is another reason that persons with Blood Type A do not absorb Vitamin B12 properly from the foods they eat. Vitamin B12 is normally found in red meat, although B12 is also found in superior vegetable protein foods such as Hawaiian Spirulina, soy products and sea kelp. This inability to absorb Vitamin B12 sufficiently from food tends to make the person with Blood Type A prone to pernicious anemia. Therefore, supplementing the diet with Vitamin B12 is critical. Also recommended is supplementation with digestive enzymes such as betaine, bromelain and papain. Bromelain is derived from pineapple, and assists with the digestion of animal protein. Betaine will help to increase the amount of hydrochloric acid in their stomachs. The best exercise for these persons is not the heavy, vigorous workouts, but more calming, centering exercises like Tai Chi, Hatha Yoga and golfing. These soothing types of exercises will relieve the Blood Type A person's stress in a more beneficial way.

Foods that encourage weight gain - Meat; dairy food; kidney beans; lima beans; wheat (in overabundance); and, of course, sugar and white flour.

Vampire Squid (Vampyroteuthis infernalis, lit. "vampire squid from hell") is a small, deep-sea cirrate cephalopod found throughout the temperate and tropical oceans of the world. Unique retractile sensory filaments justify the Vampire Squid's placement in its own order: Vampyromorphida (formerly Vampyromorpha), sharing similarities with both squid and octopuses. As a phylogenetic relict it is the only surviving member of its order, first described and mistakenly identified as an octopus in 1903 by German teuthologist Carl Chun.
The highly sensitive eyes of deepwater denizens are able to distinguish the silhouettes of other animals moving overhead. To combat this, the vampire squid generates its own bluish light (bioluminescence) in a strategy called counterillumination: The light diffuses the animal's silhouette, effectively "cloaking" its presence from the watchful eyes below. Its own large eyes detect even the faintest of gleams. A pair of photoreceptors are located on top of its head, perhaps alerting the animal to movements above

I did not like the story...In the story author used quilt as an Afro American heritage and two daughters(one of them is really successful, confident, and selfish who represents the black movement...Second dauhgter is shy,may be ugly she always looks down, not confident who represents black peoples heritage as it is written in the story who will say "Yes Sir,No Sir" and finally auther discribed "mom" as a whole nation... the nation which don't know from which way to go... 1.Go after the black movement( older daughter) or 2.Maggie;) (afro american heritage)...Mom gave quilt(which has a great history and valueto the family) to Maggie who understands the value of their heritage, and not Dee who wants to forget whole the history behind their ancestors....

May be I understood the story wrong...what do you think what's your opinion?;)

Personally I didnt like Dee (or Wangero) who was presented as selfish and rude person, you do have to count the fact that she set her house on fire while Maggie was trapped in it (as a result Maggie suffered burns which only helped to lower her self-esteem).
My own reaction to Wangero's words about quilts, how they were their "heritage" just seemed to me like they never meant a thing to her, because some time earlier (i think it was a year time frame?) she referred to them as "rags" when her mother offered her to take them with her.And now all of a sudden she changed, she became educated but she also pretended as though she was something else,as if she was ashamed about her past (which is ironic considering the fact that she was so interested in their African heritage).

Basically we understood the story in the same terms :)

"My Love"

Please, come and find me, my love
I'm ready now, to come home
Please, come and find me, my love
Let's leave this place, let's leave no trace

Can you hear me, my love, I'm shouting in the wind,
Can you hear me
Can you see me, my love, I'm drawing in the sand,
Can you see me
I hope that I'm still with you, as you are with me
You always will be

Please, come and find me, my love
I'm ready now, to come home
Please, come and find me, my love
Let's leave this place, let's leave no trace

Can you feel me, my love, I'm hurting so bad
Can you feel it
Can tell you about my thoughts, I wish that
You were here
Do you know it
The time that I've had, don't need anymore
You're the one I wait for

Please, come and find me, my love
I'm ready now, to come home
Please, come and find me, my love
Let's leave this place, let's leave no trace

If you don't like her advice, just do it in your own way...Sometimes they give false advices, if it is interest of the UNI...In my case my advisor did not want to transfer my credits from uzb and gave me wrong advice(I don't know why she did not want me to graduate early). But she was dissapointed after all...;)

I kinda see her point...the uni im attending doesn't offer certain classes every semester (like cellular biology is only available at fall and organic chem only at spring),but still im going there again and fighting for my credits :D

P.S. some advisors don't have a clue what to advice to students :?
