Iqbol FYO:

Waterstones on Picadilly + various bookshops on Charing Cross Road by Totenham Road tube station. Once I found there early version of "The Empire of the Steppes" by Rene Grousset. Alas in french, which I do not possess.
The best library in London indisputably is British Library. However you will need reader's pass, which you can't obtain during short stay. Other best source is the library by the Central Mosque in Regent's Park. Look at www.iccuk.org for more info and directions.
You can spend 5er and beyond if you wish to spend on halal edibles. Best place in Central London is Edgware Road, you will find many Lebanese cafes. Or if you stay in East London try Bengali, Pakistani ones.
The most useful means of transport is tube. Buy the weekly travelcard/oyster, much easier to travel around. Look at www.tfl.gov.uk for up to date prices. You can choose between 3 day and weekly ones.
Mosques in Central London: Central Mosque by Regent's Park, Arabic Cultural Center on Park Lane, behind Hilton hotel, small mosque at Goodge Street, Turkish mosque in Dalston and many more, depending where you stay, East, West, Central, North, South London.
If you need more info, let me know.

BTW, Jahldor Kartoshka you can obviously visit libraries by the Arab states embassies. I have personally been to Bahrain one, couldn't get books, but worth going, as you can find many titles on any subject. On Picadilly, there is an Egyptian tourism center look there as well as Egyptian Mosque(they stock arabic books) on Curzon Street(not far away from Saudi embassy), parallel street of Arabic cultural center mentioned above.

Borders is the bookshop that I find really helpful, however, as a student I used to use Waterstones in Charing Cross Rd,just off Leicester Square. On the same road there are plenty of religious and historic shops which you might find useful. Transportwise,it depends. First thing you have got to do is to get an Oyster Card for which you'll pay Ј3 and you have the choice of using it as you go,meaning paying as you go or you may also top it up for the whole week. I'm not sure how much ,but shouldn't be more than Ј25. Eating, well again it depends, if you want to visit some posh restaurants like Gaucho or Hakkasan, then you better fill your credit card up. :)
