WBA heavyweight champion Ruslan Chagaev had an unusual training session in the lead up to his first world title defense against Matt Skelton on Saturday at the sold out Burg-Wächter Castello in Düsseldorf.
On Wednesday, the champion and his trainer Michael Timm visited the training center of the Bundesliga soccer team FC Schalke 04 in Gelsenkirchen, where Timm and Schalke coach Mirko Slomka put the entire Schalke team through a surprise boxing workout.
Two of the most courageous players from the Schalke squad, national team member Gerald Asamoah and team captain Marcelo Bordon, even sparred some rounds with the world champion. Everyone involved had a lot of fun and it was a great experience for the soccer players to try some new training methods. It's already decided that these "training exchanges" will continue.
