A startling proportion of girls in India is ”missing”, as a result of sex-selective abortion or neglect after birth. In the 2001 census, there were 8 percent more boys than girls in India as a whole, and as much as 24 percent more in the region of Punjab-Haryana. Similar deficits of daughters are evident in the 2000 censuses of China and South Korea: these countries had 17 percent and 10 percent more boys than girls respectively. These are the only regions of the world with significant daughter deficit, and interestingly, they have very similar social structures which give rise to son preference.


South Korea is the first country to show a turnaround in sex ratios at birth. Analysis indicates that the country’s rapid increase in levels of education and urbanization was important for triggering the decline in son preference. However, the critical factor was a rapid diffusion of more gender-equitable social norms, creating a convergence in attitudes of the rural and urban. The South Korean experience implies that the key to reducing son preference in India lies in accelerating the pace of attitudinal change. This is borne out also by other recent analyses in India, which indicate the power of the media to reduce son preference, and also indicate that programs for offering financial incentives to raise girls have had little success.

of course fathers around the world prefer boys, and mothers prefer girls, this is not only uzbeks. but people say that it's the first impression, once they are born preferences change :D

it is an issue in our society but not as bad as for instance in china and some other south asian countries. people prefer boys, as it is a male world we live in... good thing in our society women do not go thru abortion just because they know that they are going to give a birth to a girl. i remember"short film" about chinese family i watched a while ago, where mother leaves a baby girl in the forest. it was quite sad. :(

I don't understand how it is a problem in your society? What does anyone do if they don't want to have a girl? Do people have abortions more if it is a girl??? The only things I ever noticed was naming a girl O'g'iloy or a man will leave a woman that only gives him daughters (although sex of the child truly is from the man).

Yes, more and more people are having abortion if they want a boy. But I think she also meant different treatment towards a boy/girl in a family.

I have seen many times where boys are spoiled and excluded from certain househols chores just because they were a boy while sisters work hard to do anything and everything. But then, this applies to older generation of gender. Uzbek women work a lot more harder than average uzbek men. There are dozens of tasks an uzbek woman needs to complete by the end of a day, especially when she lives in a village.

My brother was the only son with three of us-daughters. Although he was never treated any special in terms of buying us clothes and taking us to trips etc, I knew my father would give him a lot more pocket money than, say to me, when we both attended the same high school travelling miles away on a bus. He could save more money than me by the end of a school term:D

Turmush o`rtog`im birinchi farzandimizning o`g`il bo`lishini juda hohlaganlar. Olloh bizga o`g`il hadya etgach sevinchdan osmonlarda uchib yurganlar.
Ikkinchi farzandim yuragi yuragimga hamohang urishni boshlagan kundanoq bunisini ham o`g`il bo`lishini tilay boshladilar. Qizalog`im dunyoga kelgani suyunchisini eshitgan lahzada bir oz ajablanish, bir oz hafsalasizlik hayollariga ham bordilar nazarimda... Lekin qo`llariga mo`jazgina GO`ZALLIKNI olganlari zahoti Ollohga shukr aytib, o`g`l ko`rgan kunidan ham ko`proq quvondilar!:P
