A free-kick by European footballer of the year Luis Figo and a header by Guti from Figo’s cross gave eight-times champions Real Madrid CF a 2-1 victory over AS Roma on the opening night of the 2001/02 UEFA Champions League.

The 2000 winners, facing up to their former coach Fabio Capello in Rome, stole a march over the Italian champions despite Francesco Totti's 73rd-minute penalty. Also in Group A RSC Anderlecht took a point from their trip to FC Lokomotiv Moscow in a 1-1draw earlier in the evening.

In Group B Portuguese outsiders Boavista FC gave four-times champions Liverpool FC a fright in their first match back in Europe’s premier club competition since the Heysel stadium tragedy in 1985. Jorge Silva put Boavista ahead after just three minutes, but Michael Owen equalised for the English side on 29 minutes and the game finished 1-1.

The other match in the group also finished level. FC Dynamo Kyiv, normally slow starters in European club competition, took a 2-0 half-time lead over BV Borussia Dortmund, Olexandr Melashchenko scoring the first and Lucky Idahor adding the second in first-half injury time. But, from their first meaningful chance, Dortmund pulled one back through Jan Koller on 56 minutes and Marcio Amoroso equalised 16 minutes from time.

There were shocks in Group C where RCD Mallorca beat Arsenal FC 1-0 through Vicente Engonga’s penalty after Arsenal FC’s Ashley Cole was sent off in conceding the spot-kick; and Panathinaikos won 2-0 at FC Schalke 04 thanks to second-half goals from Goran Vlaovic and Angelis Basinas.

In Group D there were also surprises as Galatasaray SK beat S.S. Lazio 1-0, Ümit Karan inflicting the damage, and FC Nantes Atlantique found form with a 4-0 win over PSV Eindhoven: Pierre-Yves André, Olivier Quint and Wilfried Dalmat were on target in the first half and Marama Vahirua added the fourth after the break.
