NEWCASTLE UNITED edged a classic seven-goal thriller at St James' Park with Alan Shearer's deflected strike ensuring Bobby Robson celebrated his 100th match in charge of The Magpies with a 4-3 win over Manchester United.
A truly epic encounter saw Laurent Robert blast home a delightful free kick to set the tone for the rest of the game, although Roy Keane's late dismissal following a fracas with Shearer did taint the occasion somewhat.

Ruud van Nistelrooy equalised, when latching on to Andy Cole's knock-down to beat Shay Given, but the home side regained the lead courtesy of Rob Lee's first Premiership goal since 1998.

The midfielder's shot should have been fielded by Fabien Barthez but the Frenchman was deceived and allowed the ball to enter the net.

Nikos Dabizas, with his second goal on consecutive Saturdays, gave the hosts some breathing space, after Robert headed on a corner, but more drama was to follow as the champions hit back in style.

Ryan Giggs scored with his right foot, following good work by Gary Neville, and Juan Sebastian Veron hauled Sir Alex Ferguson's side level at 3-3 with a neat volley.

However, a break by Craig Bellamy caught out Laurent Blanc and, after Barthez intially blocked the Welshman's shot, Shearer was on hand to find the net, courtesy of a deflection off United's defensive recruit.

There were numerous other chances, with substitute Paul Scholes guilty of missing two late openings, and Keane was sent off in injury time for throwing the ball at Shearer, ensuring a wonderful match ended on a sour note.

The Red Devils skipper had earlier endured the wrath of the home fans for a bone-crunching challenge on Lee, and he had to be restrained by his team-mates after losing his temper with former England captain Shearer in the dying seconds.

Arsenal were successful in the all-London affair at Fulham, with The Gunners sinking the home side 3-1 at Craven Cottage, to move to the top of the table.

Fredrik Ljungberg opened the scoring and the visitors looked in control only for Steed Malbranque to level matters, soon after the restart.

The Gunners took the points with late goals by Thierry Henry and Dennis Bergkamp.

An incredible match at Pride Park saw Leicester City defeat Derby County with a controversial last gasp penalty by Muzzy Izzet.

Robbie Savage went down under a challenge from Craig Burley to earn the dramatic spot-kick after Fabrizio Ravanelli's effort from the same distance had looked to hand The Rams a point.

Deon Burton took just four minutes to find the net but Leicester went in front with a double strike from Dean Sturridge, against his former club.

Marian Pahars belatedly scored Southampton's first goal of the Premiership season but it proved decisive as Bolton Wanderers suffered their first defeat of the campaign.

A fine run by James Beattie created the opportunity for the little Latvian, who finished clinically, with 13 minutes left.

Tomas Repka had a debut to forget as West Ham were defeated by Middlesbrough at The Riverside Stadium.

The Czech Republic international was sent off for two bookable offences, as he hauled back Dean Windass to earn a second yellow card, and Glenn Roeder's side struggled with Don Hutchison their lone attacker in the first half.

Boro drew first blood through Brian Deane on 31 minutes, and doubled their lead ten minutes later, when Allan Johnston netted his first goal for the club, as Steve McClaren's men picked up their opening win of the season.

Earlier in the day, Liverpool triumphed in the Merseyside derby, despite conceding an early goal to Everton's Kevin Campbell.

A terrific strike by Steven Gerrard hauled the visitors level, with Michael Owen, from the penalty spot, and John Arne Riise confirming The Reds' superiority to clinch a 3-1 success for Gerard Houllier's men.
