A goal by Qi Hong put China five points clear at the top of Group B in Asia's World Cup qualifying tournament as Bora Milutinovic's side defeated the United Arab Emirates 1-0 in Abu Dhabi on Thursday.
The Shanghai Shenhua midfielder hit his third goal in five games to give the Chinese the lead three minutes before the break and put his side within striking distance of their first ever World Cup finals.
The win moved China five points ahead of second placed Qatar, who face Uzbekistan in Doha on Friday, while the Emirates are a further three points adrift and are now left to chase the group's play-off place.
China need just five more points from their remaining three games to reach Korea/Japan 2002 but Milutinovic's side were left hanging on at the end as they picked up their fourth win of the campaign.
Qi gave China the lead after they had dominated the first half and the goal came thanks to impressive build up work by Li Tie and Sun Jihai.
Liaoning midfielder Li fed the ball wide on the right to Sun and the former Crystal Palace defender cut back inside before whipping a left-foot cross over the Emirates defence for Qi to score with a glancing, diving header.
Qi should have killed the game just four minutes after the restart when another one of his surging runs from deep again caught the home defence out. Ma Mingyu's floated cross from the left was knocked down by Yang Chen to leave Qi with only Mutaz Abdullah in the UAE goal to beat but his shot was straight at the custodian.
China came close to regretting that miss as Tini Ruijs' side went looking for the equaliser.
They came closest with 11 minutes left on the clock when substitute Bahkit Saad struck a powerful, rising drive that thundered off the crossbar after leaving young goalkeeper An Qi, in for the injured Jiang Jin, groping at thin air.
Fahed Masoud almost put his effort into the top right corner of An's goal four minutes later with another audacious attempt while Salim Al Kas sent his downward header bouncing into the ground and over the bar three minutes from time as China hung on.
