Man Utd sink Sunderland
United on the rampage: Giggs and Solksjaer
Sunderland 1-3 Manchester United
Manchester United's second string gave an impressive performance away from home to quell the challenge of spirited Sunderland.
Second-half goals from Ryan Giggs and Andy Cole put Man Utd beyond the reach of the Wearsiders after Stanislav Varga's own goal had given the visitors the lead on 35 minutes.
It was left to Kevin Phillips to redress the balance somewhat with a deserved goal seven minutes from time.
Match facts
35 mins - Stanislav Varga nets own goal to give Man Utd the lead
59 mins - Well worked goal from Giggs puts Man Utd 2-0 up
66 mins - Andy Cole goal makes it 3-0
83 mins - Kevin Phillips finally gives Sunderland a goal they deserve
With one eye on Wednesday's Champions League tie with Deportivo La Coruna, Sir Alex Ferguson rested David Beckham, Fabien Barthez, Roy Keane, Juan Sebastian Veron and Ronny Johnsen.
It was left to Luke Chadwick, Nicky Butt, and Cole to make their mark which they did with great aplomb.
Ferguson's men made a determined start - with Scholes and Cole unlucky not to put the side one-up within 10 minutes.
Own goal agony: Stanislav Varga suffers in silence
But it was by no means one-sided - Sunderland's Julio Arca made an early impact while Niall Quinn and Kevin Phillips looked sharp.
Man Utd finally took the lead 10 minutes later - Chadwick made a beautiful run along the right before sending in a powerful cross to the near post.
Scholes rose to head home, but it was the head of Sunderland defender Varga which connected and he looped the ball over his own keeper.
In fairness to the lads, we could have won even more comfortably

Sunderland's best first-half chance fell to the impressive Arca, but he was unable to keep his footing, and dogged defending from Wes Brown allowed replacement keeper Ray Carroll to collect.
Peter Reid's side came close again just before the half-time whistle - Phillips' fierce, wavering shot almost wrong-footing the United keeper.
An injury to Kevin Kilbane forced Reid to replace the defender with recent acquisition David Bellion.
Cole finishes in style
The Frenchman made an immediate impact - almost winning a penalty, and placing himself at the heart of a rejuventated Sunderland side.
Their hopes were dashed though on 59 minutes when a classically-worked goal doubled Man Utd's advantage.
Giggs released Cole who made a superb run along the inside left channel before sending the return ball back for Giggs to slot past Sorensen.
Cole reinforced the scoreline netting the third on 66 minutes, capping off an excellent individual performance.

Kevin Phillips finally got the goal he deserved when he beat Wes Brown and placed his strike neatly past Carroll.
A generally solid defensive performance will have pleased Ferguson ahead of his side's European game in midweek.
