Tell your friend when you find him that the word "fidoyi" has a bad history.

I talked to the scientists from Tashkent Oriental Institute and one of them (expert in the topic Amir Temur) mentioned that "fidoyi" is connected with a group of arabs who, in history, organised a very bad movement ( qisqasi movement of killers) with the same name. He mentioned it was also discussed when giving a name to the party Fidokorlar in UZB was an issue.

I got it that it is a surname, besides our friend here said he knows him personally. Nowadays, some people do not want to have russian names or the names connected with soviet past, etc. and so do your friend maybe.

Now, what is the difference bet-n the words fidoyi and fidokor? Why not fidoyilar partiyasi but fidokorlar partiyasi? As the same scientist said, first everyone thought the word fidoyi is good so people said let's have fidoyilar partiyasi. During this time the scientist was in Germany ( it was 1998) and he critisized that people didn't not consult scientists first about the things they knew not so good. And after some time I learned that the party started to call itself as fidokorlar... . So, there must be a difference according to this scientist, he is an expert and not me.

So, I doubt that fidoyi means a patriot ( buning farqiga borganlarning oldida hijolat bo'lib qolmasin bir kun degandim... ).
