В Ташкенте с официальным визитом побывал исполняющий обязанности советника Государственного секретаря США по новым независимым государствам Джон Байерли
Как утверждают некоторые эксперты, этот визит не случайно был спланирован накануне встречи в Москве узбекского президента Ислама Каримова с его российским коллегой Владимиром Путиным, намеченной на 3-5 мая. Наблюдатели в узбекской столице обратили внимание, что как только намечается сближение узбекско-российских позиций по всему спектру двустороннего сотрудничества или планируется важная встреча в верхах, сразу же завидную активность начинает проявлять американский посол в Узбекистане или же в Ташкент прибывают высокопоставленные чиновники американской администрации. Так, весной прошлого года перед официальным визитом Владимира Путина в Узбекистан в Ташкент один за другим прибыли директоры ФБР и ЦРУ, чиновники Министерства обороны США и даже прежний Госсекретарь Мадлен Олбрайт.

Maybe Uzbekistan can benefit in this grand game "US vs. Russia" the way many developing countries did during the Soviet times. However, another outcome is also possible. I would hate to see another Afghanistan in the region.

I think we are slightly moving from the main question.The sole responsible people for the failure of Turkestan are those guys who ruled it during the Russian invasion. Their political incompetence and stupidity cost the whole nation a centuries of slavery.Any nation would do the same if they had had the chace that Russia enjoyed at that time. This is a rule of nature and politics-survival of the fittest.
About Uzbekistan's importance in CA, it's clear that we are geopolitically at the heartland of the region,we have borders with all the states of CA and Uzbekistan's strength in terms of polulation, army, political stability and economy makes it more reliable than any other CA state. America's interest in Uzbekistan can be explained by the fact that these two nations America and Russia consider themselves historical rivals for the position of world leadership. As US naval officer and great American strategist Mahan suggested, Russia must be contained from all sides by establishing pro-American alliances aganist it.We are just a part of this grand strategy aganist Russia. When Russia falls,the importance of Uzbekistan in America's eyes falls as well, as it was in the case of Yugaslavia. That is why it's in our interests to keep Russia or portray it as powerful as it was during the Cold War and at the same time use the benefits coming from the US-Uzbek alliance to full extent.
