The Abroad Planet team is pleased to announce the creation of the new and refurbished website: “International Student Portal. Online community of students studying in the USA”
The site is made of the students, by the students, for the students.

The first version of “International Student Portal “ was launched in September 2000. In August 2002, the whole conception of the project was rebuilt, and a new version of the abroadplanet site was launched.

“International Student Portal” is supported by volunteers and by donations from current members.

The website is created thanks to the efforts of a team of 18 volunteers belonging to three organizations (FSA FLEX alumni, FSA Ugrad Alumni, FSA Ugrad 2001-2002 students) from 6 different Newly Independent States: Armenia, Azerbaijan, Kyrgyzstan, Russia, Uzbekistan, and Ukraine.

Our site focuses on everything you need to know about applying to American universities, getting your visa, and finding scholarships. It also provides expert advice and tips on the most effective ways to prepare for your tests.

One of our objectives for this year is to set up a database on alumni so they can keep in touch and work together. In order to reach our goal, we need all students to register/join our community. Your collaboration in attaining this goal is extremely important and will be appreciated.

Dear : ACCELS, IREX, UMID ALUMNI :!:

Being the participant of exchange program in the USA and coming back to your home country, you probably experienced lack of communication between the people who were at the same program and who made that time memorable.
We, participants of FSA Ugrad program, would like to introduce you the project: NIS-USA Educational Exchanges as part of the "International Students Portal". Our goals are to create efficient forum for communication between people from different exchange programs and to spread awareness of exchange opportunities for people from ex-USSR.

Our site is constantly updated with the freshest information on various exchange programs grants, scholarships as well as gives practical recommendations for getting financial aid.
We also created Forums, where you can get live help from other participants of various exchange programs.
There are more than 500 people who joined our community.
So, if you are a member of any international exchange program and willing to be updated on exchange opportunities and to keep in touch with other participants, please join our NIS-USA community at:
http://abroadplanet.com

Please let us know if we may provide any additional information.

Thank you for your cooperation.

Sincerely,
Abroadplanet NIS-USA Team

The AbroadPlanet team is pleased to announce the creation of the new and refurbished website: “International Student Portal. Online community of students studying in the USA”.
AbroadPlanet focuses on everything you need to know about applying to American universities, getting your visa, and finding scholarships. It also provides expert advice and tips on the most effective ways to prepare for your tests.

We are alumni of Freedom Support Act Undergraduate (FSAU) Program. This is an undergraduate student exchange program sponsored by the United States Government. This program is aimed at supporting cultural exchange and strengthening ties of friendship between the USA and Newly Independent States, which emerged after breakdown of Soviet Union. This program supports one year of non-degree undergraduate study in the United. FSA Undergraduate Program was established in 1992, and administered by American Councils for International Education (ACIE), by International Research and Exchange Board (IREX) since 2002.

The FSAU alumni have created a website, which we would like to introduce to you. The project is entitled “International Student Portal. Online community of students studying in the USA”. The website is located at www.AbroadPlanet.com. Our mission is to provide opportunities for the world’s youth to grow personally and professionally by acknowledging the diversity of different cultures. Our website unites exchange students currently studying in the United States, those who have already completed their programs, and those who are just planning to go to the USA. The AbroadPlanet website serves our mission by creating efficient communication and experience sharing channels. By exchanging information about our home countries and sharing our own unique experience of living in the United States, we aim to motivate students from all over the world to become explore the ethnic and cultural diversity of modern world and strengthen communication and cooperation among international students.

Our goals are to spread awareness on various exchange opportunities and international study scholarships and to advise students to participate in the exchange programs, which will provide them with opportunity to explore American culture through study in the USA and meantime, bring a touch of their own culture.

The Project team is now looking forward to involve other international exchange program participants in the realization of this initiative. This cooperation has great potential benefits for not only international students currently abroad, but also young people in various countries who are interested in international study. We strongly believe that contact with other international students provides those abroad with much support in form of exchange of information, experience sharing, help in difficult situation, and last, but not least, moral support from other students who are in the same situation or have coped with it, completing their exchange programs successfully. Also, a dialogue with exchange students, opportunity to see their point of view on advantages and benefits of exchange studies, will encourage more and more young people to set out on a path of exploring foreign cultures.

One of our long-run goals is to set up a database of alumni of exchange programs so they can keep in touch and work together. In order to reach our goal, we need all students to register/join our community. Your collaboration in attaining this goal is extremely important and will be appreciated. Register and bring your piece to complete our online community of friends without borders!

We would greatly appreciate your help in development and promotion of AbroadPlanet Project. We strongly believe that this cooperation will bring much use to numerous international students and build a powerful online community of friends without borders.

I've enclosed information on our Project, a flyer and would be very pleased to provide any additional information.

Thank you for your cooperation.

Sincerely,
Marketing Manager of Abroadplanet, Lilit Kocharyan

Just Do It
By Andrei Krasutski from Belarus

We live in the world where, is the knowledge make the world goes round. Especially if its attainments you have
got abroad. I suppose that the willing to obtain education in foreign countries is a praiseworthy desire. It helps
you understand what you do want to take from life and realize what you can do in reality.

I am not an exception, it was very difficult for me when I first left my parents alone and went to USA: we missed
to each other very much. Surely this travel was the most difficult because everything was in the first time. It
was similar when newborn opens its eyes firstly. I didn't know anybody, my budget was quite small. But the main
problems were how to reach my place and where I could find accommodation. Honestly, all my friends who
participated in the same program as me collided with the same problems too.

Nevertheless, I found studio, and met some guys from my country. Therefore since this time I started to feel
myself better, they helped with everything whatever I wanted. To my mind this is very important if you don't feel
yourself lonely in so big country as USA.

During this travel my goal was to improve my language and earn money for study. I achieved it: I can read, write
and speak fluently in English, but study abroad is quite expensive for people from such country as mine.

Last summer I spent in London where I studied marketing in London school of advertising and marketing. It was
easier because I was with my girlfriend; she worked as lab assistant in London University as Internship. And
before we came I had found studio for us thanks to the fact that some my friends live and study in London. It was
great I worked in group with guys from the different countries; the common language in which we communicated was
English surely. We made as own projects so and group.

Now after two years of traveling, I can estimate what is the most important for international students and I do
it successfully when my friends ask me to give them advice or as a consultant in the firm of my friend. I try to
help everybody to avoid those problems which I have got. He presented in our country such sponsors organizations
as CIEE, WEUSA and etc. More than that, I researched our market of the international programs for students.

Finally, I would like to give you my motto. Don't think that something is impossible, because you can achieve
everything whatever you want.

So my main advice to other international students is to not afraid difficulties they will make you stronger and
experienced. Let us remember Nike slogan:
JUST DO IT.

TIPS AND TRICKS - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

Save money while calling home using international phone cards.

To save money, use a no connection fee phone card to call first, to make sure that the person you want to talk
to is home. Then, hang up, and use a phone card with connection fee to call again. You can find inexpensive phone
cards to call from abroad to your home country at http://www.international-call.com

Good job Lia!

Indeed, such portal would be off help for students both who are presently in US and those alumni who are back in their countries. You know, I just wanted to suggest (as you have mentioned that you welcome ideas on expanding the site) to provide information in some section about how the students can buy cheap phone cards or just provide a list of links that would help them to keep in touch with their loved ones back at home.

Also another important part of the student's life is to communicate with a family and it would be good if there would be a section for parents of those exchange students (probably good to have it in Russian at the beginning and then have in local languages of individual countries) where they could find updated news, just any info related to the exchange year experiences of their kids. Because quite a few parents especially of those students who come from the remote regions don't even have good experience with e-mails let alone IP-telefonia options. And it would be great to help our families to stay in touch as well. Maybe suggest links to the sites that help train adults on using basic Internet?

Well, anyways great job and good luck with future projects. Happy New Year! :)
